turns out the evga 750i ftw drivers on cd (actually, was an issue with all 750i boards and possibly others from what i read) were buggy. uninstalled sata controllers then reinstalled 15.23 drivers from nvidia's website and not one bsod or hdd issue since. thanks for the info guys. i'll be...

ok, now it's giving me bsod and won't load windows xp home (only os i have tried) if i have the second sata hdd hooked up. error is irql_not_less_or_equal and says something about drivers. if i unhook the drive it works great. no issues in hardware manager for drivers.

it was in admin tools and needed a partition. i'm good now, thanks so much, i didn't know about admin tools (i'm a noob) thanks again.

well, i'm glad you suggested what i was looking at, the other board i was looking at was the EVGA 750i board. it got really good reviews from hardocp and has 2x 16x pcie so i don't have to worry about my original question anymore. it's a bit more than the gigabyte, but only by like 20 bucks...
