    Motherboard dead or alive?

Thanks, tried that, I think it changed the behavior to just the beep codes, and then a single blinking prompt...and then no video out at all. The power switch usually stops responding too. Could this be ram, video or cpu perhaps?

    Motherboard dead or alive?

My Asus p5b vanilla seems to be acting up. Most of the time I get a normal POST beep followed by 3 quick beeps and then just a black screen with the fans whirring. Other times the OS will load up to the Windows XP loading logo and then just stop (fan's still turning etc. just black screen.)...

    PSU noises and lights

Got a new Antec Earthwatts 500w. This and my old power supply would make a "charging" sound, like a defibrillator on TV, although much quieter, every time you flipped the toggle switch on the PSU. But it goes away right away. I can't remember if this is normal. This is all on a broken system so...

    Google Wussing Out To China?

Not surprising if true. Google already showed their lack of ethics by helping to restrict free speech in China in the first place, and now they're pretending to care about democracy only after a serious breach of their security by the Chinese government? It's pretty transparent they're just a...

    Introducing Hulu Plus for $9.99

The adds on cable are really insane, it completely breaks up the viewing experience. Hulu's ads are almost non-existent in comparison, I barely notice anymore.

    Introducing Hulu Plus for $9.99

Well Hulu does offer a lot of non-network TV shows, combine that with the convenience of accessing the full season, not having to queue up the tivo, and HD, less ads than cable, for $10/month? Overall seems like a good deal, in terms of the cost per episode, when compared to cable. Only...

    X6800 still viable?

Upgrading to 1066 memory is a waste (especially considering ddr2 prices), you're more likely to benefit from another 2 gigs of ram.

Pentium D 915 in Modern Gaming

Ah that makes sense. It's a completely outdated chip, but applications still work pretty decently on it, even on my crap setup, probably the reason why I still haven't upgraded.

Pentium D 915 in Modern Gaming

I have a Pentium D 915, 1G Ram, and a 7600 GS and it's a DOG in all games, lowest settings. Perhaps it's because it's running really hot, 56C idle, or only 1 gig of ram, don't know, but I see it doesn't seem typical for it to be this slow. I really thought the Pentium D was that slow.

Do I need a New PSU?

Great, thanks a lot guys, going with the TX650. :D 650 watts should definitely serve my needs for a long time to come.

Do I need a New PSU?

Yeah it says Antec SmartPower 450, sp-450. Wow it has a really bad rating on newegg, 2 eggs. People seem pretty confident in Corsair, I think that's the safest bet. The 650TX and the 550VX are the same price on Newegg, 650TX cheaper with rebate. Any reason to get the 550VX?

Do I need a New PSU?

I have a power supply from an Antec Sonata II (450 watt), that I've been using for about 3.5 years, about 14 hours a day. Now I've calculated that the PSU is strong enough for my components (specs below), and I haven't noticed anything wrong with it, but I'm just not sure that it's "safe" to use...

    Everex XT5000T Support thread

Ah I see, thanks. I re flowed the the GPU and got the laptop to POST. Based on what you said I think I'll reflow the northbridge too before I put the laptop back together.

    Everex XT5000T Support thread

Wouldn't a complete re-flow of the chip mean that the solder actually melts? In this case, wouldn't components on the other side of the board just fall off as you were heating up the other side? How can the solder correctly re-flow if it doesn't melt? And what exactly is wrong with the chip, is...

    New HP Workstations

Hey thanks, I get it now. The z800 case does look awesome, wish you could just buy one of those solo.

    New HP Workstations

I don't get this about workstations like this one: the most expensive model of the HP Z800 is $3,599.00 for 2.66ghz quad core, 3gb RAM etc.- a pretty basic setup. An i7 setup would be like half that, sure it's xeon but supposedly there's no significant difference, so why the high price?

    Everex XT5000T Support thread

I'm no expert on this but at the very least the model you linked to has a different interface connection than the one in the XT5000T. The link looks like standard SATA and the one in the laptop is some proprietary type, though it might be possible to find a replacement of the right type somewhere.

    Everex XT5000T Support thread

I know I did that; used the recovery disk and then merged the partitions with the tools in Vista. Forgot how and the process was a bit convoluted and multi-stepped, nor 'official' in anyway. I just messed around till I got it right, but since it was a fresh install and I had everything backed up...

    Everex XT5000T Support thread

Thanks mugimba, I'm gonna try the baking thing. Also, I've read here something about "jump switches" to fix the problem, but can't find out how to do this. Is there any info? I also read something about a 7600 bug, where you can reset the 'bios password' by shorting something, maybe this is...

    Everex XT5000T Support thread

I think mine just died. When I turn the power on, the fan turns on full blast (and stays on) but that's all. Screen is black, no LCD backlight, no beeps or anything. I tried: -both sticks of ram alone in each slot -No hard drives - Takeout battery for 15 minutes, - different monitor etc...

NEC MultiSync 24WMGX³ First Professional Review Translated

Yeah it's got my 3 big features, low lag, non-TN viewing angles, and height adjustable, but if it costs that much, theres little reason not to just get the HP LP2475W, much cheaper, and better panel.

    22-24 inch monitor for movies/gaming

For me, height adjustability is a must, so it makes the problem of finding a decent monitor even harder. But if that's not important, then the BenQ FP241VW is a good choice as it has good viewing angles and low lag (supposedly)

Samsung 305T owners (regular or Plus) need help

How far are your eyes from the screen? I hear that the SDE can be eliminated by sitting with eyes at least 2 feet away from the screen.

    How is the Samsung 2493HM?

Been looking into this one as well. Mostly I've heard a lot of positive except that it's a TN, therefore it has TN viewing angles, and the touch sensitive buttons are annoying. It's sorta new too and just recently got reviewed in many places, so that could be one thing to consider.

Official BenQ FP241W Thread !!! Info, Pictures, Reviews

Excellent thanks. Hope they don't run out by the time I can buy. I'm tired of making compromises between viewing angle, input lag, and height adjustablility. This seems all around an ideal monitor.

Official BenQ FP241W Thread !!! Info, Pictures, Reviews

Sorry if this sounds like a noob question, but is the consensus that it is still safe to buy one these bad boys? I mean since they aren't being made anymore, is it all just "bad stock" left? Anyone have any tips where to buy a good unit from?

    26" Displays -- 3 Options.

Yeah, I kinda feel the same way after doing a lot of LCD research for a new monitor purchase. I think accurate mouse movement is so crucial to computer use that it shouldn't be sacrificed at all, so PVA monitors are out. With IPS, the "screen door effect" sounds really bad if you do a lot of...

    26" Displays -- 3 Options.

Can I TN panel really stand up to a 26 inch monitor in terms of vertical viewing angles? Don't you see a difference in color from top to bottom when looking at it head on (especially in portrait mode?) I'm only asking because I'm also considering this purchase, and I know my laptop's 17 inch WS...

    Dell 2408WFP Now Available

I saw that as well, but was dubious as the results seemed too good to be true. I'm quite curious what your results will be. If the A01 improvements add on to the supposed HDMI improvements, the 2408WFP may be purchase worthy :D

Strip of bad pixels at bottom of screen, fixable?

Anyone encounter this before? My monitor was suddenly stricken with a 20-pixel high strip of "bad" pixels at the bottom. I say "bad" because they are not dead, they are simply misbehaving, lighting up semi-randomly. It's not the video card, computer, or specific DVI/VGA input port (tried all...

    Which 24" monitor?

Why is that? All I've heard about it is good, meanwhile the ones you mention are TN, which from what I'v heard have viewing angle problems even when viewed in an ideal position, since they are 24" (please correct if this is wrong). Anyway I'm curious because I was thinking about buying it or...
