While ambitious, i don't think this article should have been shared on hardocp. It's not the lack of detail, it's the lack of mentioning that there is a lot more than just "pick a board, put together hardware, windows or linux, here's a cool app, and you can use ESX"
The first thing that...
On the other hand, if my ISP allowed me to opt into a service where they would cut me off if they detected a virus i would. I'd hate for a compromised system to be sending all sorts of data from my system out to the world.
When we had cogent at the office they called us and said one of our...
I generally find finger-pointing annoying, but this is hilarious. H still isn't accepting that they were at fault for putting something in print.
The headline says "We cover where we were right and where we were misinformed."
When a news outlet says "An undisclosed source" then the reader...
I find it funny that you people think stuck throttle didn't exist prior to DBW systems. Moving to a computer controlled acceleration pedal from a physical wire and spring has likely saved many peoples lives.
What do you do when the spring rusts and breaks on your old car? The throttle just...
anyone that got in on the sale of TPB is laughing their way to the bank. TPB was good while it lasted, but it's all but gone now. Is anyone even using it anymore?
I was at the last E3 before they terminated the Booth Babes. It was fun. Attendance for the following dry E3 was decent, but the thing was a ghost town every year after that.
Maybe they should lay out some ideas for devs if they don't have a product ready. such as "If your game is no where...
What's great about the current internet is that it's open, which allows backwards compatibility and expandability for each layer. cable and dsl speeds have been going up. FIOS has been introduced. wireless broadband has been introduced. IPv6 has been stumbling along.
to put it simply, any...
just for fun we can talk about system acceleration through manual "clustering"
basically, dedicate a box to do something that would normally slow down your primary system. FOr the longest time I used one of my weak boxes as my BitTorrent client. I originally just used remote desktop to get...

I always get a chuckle when someone does something like this that isn't life-threatening and gets people worked up over nothing.
Look, the transit systems are fucked up. Unlocked doors are a huge security risk. This type of negligence deserves to be uncovered. If anything happens due to...
I used to hate Vista then I started using it. I've now come to the conclusion that I hate Microsoft for nurturing software and device development habits that brought us to this mess.
Vista isn't all that bad. People complain about resource usage but all of that doesn't mean jack if your...
lol. You probably had an Outlook window opening underneath the main program. Outlook wouldn't let the app do anything until the window was completed and closed.
Stupid MS, this was a problem in Office 2003 too.
it's simple. although data is written and read as binary, it is contained as differences in voltage or magnetic strength.
Consider that a 0 bit is +3 and a 1 bit is a +5. Knowing this, when you overwrite a bit, it doesn't overwrite exactly, just close. Knowing this, you can examine the...
ntbackup running as a scheduled task, backup to a share on the linux server.
Google has a huge listing of linux backup software that runs with and without clients on windows machines.
last time i was at Fry's they had a tower that held a power supply and a boatload of drives. Only drives, no other components. Ran over usb or eSATA i believe.
currently using AT&T T3 service, paying out the ass for it, but we have some advance setup going on. Cogent is our backup with a 100mb fiber drop. Price is amazingly reasonable, less then a T1 IIRC. AT&T business DSL is our remote site connection. No SLA = downtime, and boy do we know it...
IT has no clue as to what they are doing if a non-IT has domain admin rights. How could IT chase down a problem if a non-IT is running amok with domain admin rights?
This is the root cause of the problem.
disable tcp offloading. we had to do this on some of our HP proliant servers as it was not helping at all.
RAID 5 is horrible for disk IO. If possible convert to RAID 10. DB absolutely must be on RAID 10
It's not a backup server, it's a backup workstation....one to be used if the other goes down.
Sounds like he bought parts at discount and put it together himself for the same price as a regular machine...not a good idea when it's not your money.
As a user of Google Apps I think I should clear up some points:
Google Apps is NOT Google Docs.
Google Apps a way for a person or group of people to collaborate using Google's email, docs, calendar, start-page, IM, web-pages, etc.
It's very easy to set up. Plug in your info, change...
I'm looking for a thin HTPC case i want something that doesn't dwarf my other components. I'm ok with either half-height or riser card layouts and mATX mobo size.
Any recommendations? I've tried searches but maybe I'm using the wrong search terms...
New, in box T-Mobile Blackberry 8800. Box is opened, SIM card was removed, everything else is still in plastic and the LCD screen still covered.
$350 paypal. Send me a PM if interested.
My company was in the same situation not to long ago. HP/Compaq has had pretty good NT server support. try looking for a used p3 or xeon based Compaq Proliant or HP Proliant server. I know replacement parts are still available for these, as we keep the machines up and running even though we...
Well...from when i did QA for JAMDAT, I can tell you it's not about how good the game is, it's about how cross-platform it is.
don't produce for PalmOS or Windows Mobile, barely anything uses that stuff. Develop for the free phones they give out with service plans...you know, the ones...
I'm looking to set up a batch file that will mount a volume, echo the free space and used space to a txt file, then unmount. I want it to do this for about 10 volumes. I know it's possible, as I've done it before. That was about 3 years ago though, and my reference books are being shipped to...
RIS sends out special DHCP packets in response to a bootp/PXE boot request. The packets contain the address of the RIS server.
Microsoft has documentation on how to set up RIS to use an alternate DHCP server, or at least hints on what you need to do.
pre-n doesn't really exist...but hardware does exist that uses what is expected to be part of the 802.11n standard.
netgear sells it, and the SRX uses it too. It's MultipleInMultipleOut, which is a major part of the new N standard, and 3 antennas. It's basically broadband and reflectivity...
the creative booth at E3 was all about getting guys to chant the soundblaster name. They tried to show off the difference in sound quality when it was too loud to hear someone screaming right next to you.
"All about the framerate" was something they chanted. Seriously. Did it sound better...
You know the easiest way to find out is to put in in there with a temp monitoring program...
for very basic file serving duties, just under clock/volt it if it gets hot.
