I think that was a function of being able to turn the voltages up REALLY high on the old Conroes. I remember going up to 1.5v on the vcore. With the die shrinks, it's dangerous and almost unnecessary to raise the voltages a lot.
What's your VID? I'm pretty sure most Q9550s can hit 3.00ghz at VID voltage. My extremely high 1.275VID chip hits 3.00 at 1.2 vcore.
General rules of thumb are to stay below 1.4 vcore and vtt. You definitely do not need either of those that high for a low overclock. Don't forget about the NB...
I think your best bet might be a simple Q6600 upgrade. From the Anandtech benches, the C2Quads keep up quite well with the i5 in gaming and dvd encoding. (Caveat, I hear their codec isn't very optimized and that newer ones might take better advantage of the i5/i7. I use handbrake's x264, I know...
If you look at the Anandtech charts, the Q9650 at 3.0ghz isn't very far behind in games and video encoding, the two things I need cpu power for. Too bad I'm limited with my Q9550 to about 3.6ghz due to my motherboard whereas the Nehalems are pushing close to 4ghz. The Yorkfields also lose in the...
Different strokes. :)
If only there were reasonably priced long keyboard trays available. All the special ergonomic ones I've looked at cost upwards of $100! I just decided to buy a bigger desk instead.
Exactly why I don't think the i5 is the greatest idea as of now. In a few months when prices stabilize, the price difference will be sufficiently wide to warrant the performance difference. Until then, why buy the i5?
The i5 doesn't seem significantly cheaper. Most motherboard previews I have seen estimate price to be about $200+, the same cost as a budget x58 mobo. Granted, most P55 previews have been high end offerings, but it seems most early P55 boards will be just as expensive as the X58 until more chips...
I had the Ikea keyboard tray and I'm not a big fan of it. It's not wide enough to fit a decent sized keyboard along with a mouse, so I abandoned that idea after a few days.
I'm also curious, doesn't having a tower on top of the desk bother you guys? My computer is much louder when it's not...
Do you live near a Microcenter? I think a better use of that $100 is towards an i7/mobo if you want to spend that much. Just recently, the i7 920 was $200, the Q9550 $170.
The nVidia mobile gpu debacle has left a very bitter taste in my mouth, along with Dell's terrible management of the whole situation. I probably won't be buying from either for a long time.
Went from 7800gt -> 4870 1gb. Price was also a big plus for AMD, although I wish it didn't run so hot.
I'm springing for the Q9550 instead of the i7 for a few reasons.
I don't even need the Q9550 for my computing needs. I play a few non-demanding games. (Fallout 3, DotA, L4D) I'm actually completely satisfied with the E6600 at 3.0ghz currently and for the foreseeable future, as I really don't do...
Thanks for the response. I tried going through tech news sites for anything, but nothing confirmed or even speculated about. I'm just going to jump on the q9550. Should last me another 3 years just like this trusty e6600 did.
As many know, Microcenter has a great deal on the Intel Q9550. I'm thinking of getting one but it might not be put to use for about a month. Are there any planned price cuts on Yorkfields in the near future?
I'd like to know about this as well. Does WHS put all drives into a single pool?
I was thinking of building a server with WHS to backup my computers as well as store media. Can WHS duplicate data stored on itself? That way I can unload all the movies I have from my desktop to the server...
I believe the Agility uses the same controller but slower memory. And if warranty is an issue for you, the Vertex lasts 3 years whereas the Agility is 2.
I picked up the Logitech Illuminated when it was on sale for $40 and I like the keyboard, but that's because I'm a fan of the shorter and softer key travel of laptop keys. So keep in mind what kind of switch you like for your keys.
For those who use an additional shelf on top of the desk, how comfortable is it looking up at a monitor? I'm thinking of doing the same, as I have speakers which need to be raised and a desk sub (Swan M10) which needs to be centered. Ergonomically speaking, I think a desk mount will offer a more...
Mechanical drives are good for what you intend, I just don't think you need to pay velociraptor price for storage drives. The WD Black series will be nearly as good and cost significantly less.
For my E6600, I have to use considerably more voltage to run 400 fsb than 333 at approx. the same speed. I can actually hit 3.0 at stock voltage with the 333 fsb, whereas 400 fsb requires much more.
Jealous? I'd just say most are offering pretty solid advice to help the kid out. Why spend money and time on something not currently needed, especially with other projects he's already shown interest in.
I have a 4870 1GB card. After a fresh Vista x64 and Catalyst 9.3 install, I noticed my clock speeds get stuck at 500/500, even when running 3D applications. At bootup, the clocks read 500/900 according to CCC. After I load a 3D program, it reverts to 500/500 and won't let me change the speeds...
From all the numbers I looked up, 430W should be just enough, but my PSU is a couple years old. I reseated everything, even checked the ram / cpu in another machine, all worked. What signs are typical of not enough power? I get a flash of power, then nothing.
Anyone have a similar experience?
Currently running E6600 + 4870 setup on a Seasonic S12-430W. Was cleaning out my case and when I plugged everything back in, no bootup. The fan and power light flicker for just 1/10th of a second then die. Using a friend's equipment, I figured out I can boot...
E6600 @ 2.8
4gb of ram
7900GT
I get VERY playable frames even at 1920 x 1200. Granted, I do have most settings at med/high with no AA. I only get some slowdown with my flashlight shining at large, large hordes of zombies in my face.
