Just built myself a new gaming pc/hackintosh and just curious about the link speed of my M.2 drive, as currently it only connects at x2 which gives me around 750MB/s read/write. Understand this drive is capable of quite a bit more!

Slightly odd request... does anyone know what the internal drive is inside this enclosure?
I want to put the 2TB drive into a small ITX build and then put my spare 500GB drive into this enclosure but I'm concerned that internally they might use some proprietary connector like my 2.5" WD...
I'm currently using my old iMac 2011 with a i7 chip, it's fairly quick but my MBP Retina 2014 is lightning fast in comparison (I do quite a bit of CPU intensive work and works out about 60% faster).
With this in mind I'm considering buying 2x 4K monitors for use with my MBPr then use this as...
Just checking up on my SSD today and was a little shocked it was this bad! When I first installed Yosemite I enabled trim and double checked it was enabled but another update must have disabled it again.
Just a heads up to others out there with aftermarket SSDs to check it's enabled :)
Slightly strange request, I have a Sonos system and want to intercept and modify the HTTP API traffic. So volume control done via the Sonos app will control my amp via IP (I understand that the normal way is to just turn the amp volume quite high and manage the volume via Sonos, but this is [H]...
Been on the look out for a good server motherboard deal for some time now and got too excited when one popped up I didn't read the model number correctly.
I have bought an X9SRL (without -F) and it doesn't come with IPMI, is it possible to add it via some sort of add in card?
Probably a...
Bit of an odd one this which I can't quite figure out. Basically after a few hours use my 2011 iMac running Yosemite 10.10.1 will stop all it's pretty UI interactivity, by this I mean:
The dock no longer magnifies when I hover over it
Clicking a link in the browser does not show the clicked...
Been having a few issues the past couple of weeks where when powering up my file server, it gets stuck on the "Waiting for F/W to become ready" boot screen. Then ends up rebooting every 300 seconds in a endless loop.
The server isn't powered on 24/7 due to the insane amount of power it draws...
I just bought myself a new retina MBP and noticed the keys are a much lower profile than my previous MBP and wireless keyboard included with my 2011 iMac.
Are the newer wireless keyboards the same low profile as the rMBP?
Got to say I much prefer the lower profile! Just wondering if...
Figured I'd ask this here as there is some brilliant advice on just about everything!
I'm currently investigating securing my connections and making my home lab available for when I'm on the road, I was thinking of using OpenVPN on my pfSense box for this. Any pointers/articles which would...
I have a 2011 iMac with Sonnet PCIe enclosure/Myricom 10GbE card, bought in the hopes of making full use of my NAS' potential.
Unfortunately I can't seem to get the maximum out of my network, have tried tweaking the settings as per the guide here...
I currently have an Xcase RM 424S (similar to the Norco product), which is a 4U 24 bay server case, with 17 HDDs. My motherboard is an Supermicro X9SCM which from what I gather only offers speed control of PWM fans.
The case...
I am fairly new to ZFS, have only scraped the surface of what's possible so apologies if this should be pretty obvious.
All my data (30TB~) is currently stored on 2x hardware RAID6 arrays and has been working flawlessly. This is also backed up offsite nightly via rsync, also working flawlessly...
Looks like recently Apple introduced the ability to network two Mac's together using a single thunderbolt lead.
http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/10/os-x-10-9-brings-fast-but-choppy-thunderbolt-networking/
Seeing as I have a spare thunderbolt lead around I would give this a try. But I...
I have a Dell 5524 which is all working perfectly besides when a server or workstation first connects, for example turn iMac on at the mains, power up and it won't have any network access for usually 30-60 seconds but the LED indicators are on and the iMac says connected (static IP)
This...
I am trying to create a PHP script which will SSH into my NAS and power it down. Probably better ways of doing it, but thought this would be the easiest.
PHP side I am fine with, the issue is creating a sudo command which can be run without a password.
I have created a user 'power' with...
I have a small 10GbE network at home (used for work) consisting of a NAS and a bunch of ESXi hosts.
I recently decided to take the plunge and spend far too much money getting my iMac (i5 / 16GB DDR3 / SSD) onto this network using a Sonnet Echo Express thunderbolt enclosure, Myricom...
I am currently learning various networking techniques, setups etc all in my personal time. So please bear with any things I have overlooked here. This is a huge learning curve for me.
I have been offered a 8024F SFP+ 10GbE switch and found a 5524 fairly cheap on eBay (A tad over £1k for both...
I have a PHP based app service which allows a load of tablets on a LAN to communicate with each other. Everything is stored in mySQL with around 100 queries a second
The database never exceeds 50MB in size. The app only runs for 4 hours.
It's a pile a crap, there is no budget for a...
I have a Supermicro X9SCM with Intel E3 1220v2 inside a short 2U case (http://www.xcase.co.uk/X-Case-RM-204-Short-p/case-x-case-rm204s.htm this but I have the older version with 60mm fans) running 24/7 with a Zalman can controller to keep them fairly quiet
Anyway with the recent heatwave in...
I am fairly clued up with mySQL and can do joins, sub queries at a basic level but I have never had to return data in such a fashion before.
What I need to return on a basic level (re-nammed to a more common use as I don't have a DB structure to post online) is return all users with all their...
I have built myself a lab up of 5 hosts, all was working perfectly for a few days, noticed today that the fans of the server hosting the vCenter appliance were on full speed.
After some investigation it turns out that the vCenter server appliance is running at 100% CPU usage.
I have done...
Just had a mad idea, I connect my iMac to my amp through TOSLINK and the only way to control my amp is via IR (or get off my bum to use the volume control )
Is there a way in which I could overwrite the standard functions of these buttons (ideally only when an external device is...
I have just dug out my old Matrix Orbital LK202-25-USB with a 7 digit keypad (think its the B202A-BK)
I can successfully get LCDproc to show up on the display. But I can't get the keypad to work, this is due to a few issues.
- I have a 12 pin header on the LCD module but only a 6 pin...
I have built a remote backup server of old components (AM2 with 4GB DDR2 non-ECC). I plan on using a Raid z2 with 8x 1TB disks.
I know generally it's recommended to use ECC ram with ZFS, not here to discuss that at all. I don't want to spent £300 odd to upgrade this box.
This backups will...
I have a little lab I have setup with two ESXi hosts, and using vSphere trial I have put them into a cluster and some other overly complex networking setup.
All just to experiment as I have quite a bit of free time at the moment.
I have my master ESXi system which hosts the vSA, pfSense...
Sorry if this is clearly obvious but I am learning/playing with this so probably on the wrong track already
What I am trying to do is boot multiple diskless machines from iSCSI by chain-loading iPXE over PXE, but combining it with PHP scripts to dual boot machines remotely using a...
Currently having an issue where my ESXi box powers up VMs on start up, the first VM that is powered up has a NIC passed through to it causing a PSOD (which I have found a patch for on the Vmware site...
I'm in the process of building a small home lab (also for work as I work for myself) with 5 esxi hosts and a self built NAS, which will serve as my iscsi storage for ESXi
Currently have a HP procurve 1800-24G which is a decent switch and seems to stand up fairly well but I would like a layer...
I am currently have the below in a test setup, but for some reason I can't quite get my head round is in nmon I see a consistent write to my RAID array of about 23-25MB/s on a new volume only just mounted.
There is nothing on this volume, I can't see any process which is using it (load is...
I have some Intel X540 dual 10GbE network cards which I put into the below setups.
But for some reason setup 1, boots fine with no errors but only registers 24GB ram even though there is 32GB installed, remove the X540 and shows 32GB ram.
I have tried different PCIe slots too...
Setup 2...
I managed to bag 3 Intel/Dell X540 dual port 10GbE cards off eBay for a very cheap price here in the UK. They only came with low profile brackets which is fine as two of the servers they are for are 2U but my NAS is 4U and requires full height brackets.
Where can I buy a full height bracket...
I am a PHP developer who primarily works with Zend Framework with mySQL, I don't have much experience with building scaling applications. This seems to be in increasing demand from my reoccurring clients now due to their higher profile clients and essentially higher traffic websites...
So far...
Not too sure what electricity prices are like on the other side of the pond, but here in the UK electricity prices are always on the rise. After receiving a shocker of a electricity bill I decided to investigate what power consumption my home kit (also doubles up as my work lab for remote...
I recently tried to update my firmware on the sas expander on my Areca 1680ix-24 controller.
Currently this is what it shows on my 'SY' command via the serial connection. There seems to be an issue with the CFG Data (this is after trying to update the data)
CLI>sy
Vender : Areca...
I bought myself a very nice Areca ARC1680ix-24 and absolutely love it, so easy to use!
But seem to be having an issue with one of my drives in my new RAID6 array where sometimes on boot the controller detects 7 of the 8 drives, causing an alarm/event to be thrown of a missing device on the...
I have 8x Hitachi 5K3000 3TB disks in RAID6 on my Areca controller.
On the controller these show as 18000.0GB
In Ubuntu it shows as 18000.0GB in fdisk
Disk /dev/sdb: 18000.0 GB, 17999997173760 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 273546 cylinders, total 4394530560 sectors

Had my RAID 6 array for over a year now with no issues. Has been powered up and down as required (system always had power though).
Today started the machine up and Ubuntu wouldn't start!
I have 8x Hitachi 5K3000 3TB drives in RAID6, the following is from the command line config...

I have two server's (nothing too fancy, but only has VGA output) which get moved between various locations where we are working.
Currently we carry around a monitor/keyboard to access them if there is any issues with them. Does any one know of any cheap devices which would allow capture of...
Hi
Recently did a bunch of events where we would setup a wireless network at a venue (single open plan room max 30m x 30m in size) which would consist of a local server ( full atx desktop computer) and high end home networking router
Connected to this would be up to 30 clients running...
