    WTB: PC2-5300 DDR2 667MHz 200-pin SO-DIMM laptop RAM 4GB 2x2GB

Thanks for your interest. I'm going to wait a little bit and see if I can get some PC2-5300, because I'm confident that'll work. I've seen conflicting information about PC2-6400 in this machine. But if I don't get some 5300 soon I may get back to you and give the 6400 a shot. I see that your...

    WTB: PC2-5300 DDR2 667MHz 200-pin SO-DIMM laptop RAM 4GB 2x2GB

I'm looking for 4GB (matched pair 2x2GB) PC2-5300 SO-DIMM RAM in good working order. It's meant for an early 2009 white Apple Macbook. If I'm still looking and the price is right, I might roll the dice on PC2-6400. Thanks

Member since 2007, can I please create a thread in For Sale / Trade

Hello, I've been a member of this forum since 2007 and haven't caused any problems. Can I please use the For Sale / Trade forum normally? How would 38 more random posts make me more qualified to do that?

Can't change monitor refresh rate in Windows 7 Home Premium

Huh? This is the first I've heard that those 2 values are averaged to arrive at the used refresh rate. How do you know that?

Can't change monitor refresh rate in Windows 7 Home Premium

I already posted documention with specific details. You're assuming way more than I am. I can see you're one of those people who wants to waste my time by inducing me to find and reference information that you'll then just ignore, so I'm not wasting any more time with that. You can re-read my...

Can't change monitor refresh rate in Windows 7 Home Premium

Ok, well thanks for your time and help, I appreciate it. Either of those is possible. It's possible they published the wrong value in the specs and used the wrong value in the EDID. That latter situation is exactly what an INF file that adds these registry entries is supposed to be...

Can't change monitor refresh rate in Windows 7 Home Premium

Really, that's it? I might be reaching the wrong conclusion, but I'm hardly jumping to conclusions. That's why I'm posting references to the information I'm basing my conclusions on, not just throwing out one-liner wild guesses.

    Are post revisions saved?

I was trying to post a reply to a thread I started and I edited the original post to copy and paste something out. But I accidentally pasted my reply into the edit box and submitted it, replacing the original post with the reply I intended to post. How are you supposed to contact a mod on...

Can't change monitor refresh rate in Windows 7 Home Premium

How would we decide who's right? No, but this is the only native resolution. It's also only supposed to specify data that needs to override the EDID. I think it's supposed to use them a particular way. I think it's not using them at all. How do you suggest it is / is supposed to use...

Can't change monitor refresh rate in Windows 7 Home Premium

Yes, but the data in the INF / registry is specific to resolution. It specifies a vertical refresh range of 56-76Hz specifically for 1680x1050 (see my OP). If the monitor can't actually do > 60Hz at 1680x1050, that's an error by Dell.
  11. D

Can't change monitor refresh rate in Windows 7 Home Premium

Maybe, maybe not. I'm not totally convinced that's true -- their own INF specifies up to 76Hz at 1680x1050.

Can't change monitor refresh rate in Windows 7 Home Premium

Thanks for your reply. It's possible that I never actually had this running at 75Hz before, but I feel confident it's not an issue of cable quality since if it was running at 75Hz before it was the same cable the day before. Thanks for going to the trouble of finding and linking that stuff...

Can't change monitor refresh rate in Windows 7 Home Premium

Thanks for this info, it's really helpful to know that CRU is legit in case I want to go that route. Thanks for doing that. I see that in some info too. Even so, let's just say for the sake of argument that 60Hz is the max it can actually handle at 1680x1050, that still doesn't explain why...

Do you use or keep enabled "System Restore"? (Windonws 7)

In years of Windows use, I've hardly ever used System Restore. But I did just use it yesterday. I recently changed a machine from XP to Win 7 Home Premium and I disabled automatic updates right off the bat. Yesterday I rebooted the machine and all of a sudden Windows was trying to automatically...

Can't change monitor refresh rate in Windows 7 Home Premium

Thanks for your reply. It's a DVI-D single link cable. Like I said, I think this was running at 75Hz in XP, but I'm not positive. If it was, it was with this cable. I forgot to mention in my original post that I'd prefer a solution to this that doesn't require downloading some dodgy 3rd...

Can't change monitor refresh rate in Windows 7 Home Premium

Seriously, what is up with Windows not letting me set my refresh rate? I just changed a machine from Win XP Pro to Win 7 Home Premium x64. (I knew Windows 7 would be super annoying, but I finally had to take my chances to escape the constant annoyance of < 4GB RAM.) This machine has a Dell...

Used Windows XP, MS says product key is for disc with different service pack

I'm worried that if I activate it on one computer, and then shortly thereafter try to activate it on another, they'll take issue with that and it could screw up the license. I ended up making a disc with SP2 slipstreamed. I installed that and it activated over the internet. (I took it for...

Ok. Hmm, ok. I guess I'll have think about picking up another one relatively soon. Kicking myself for not thinking of it when I was loading up the cart. Really? Damn, too bad nobody noticed or had the chance to reply to my question about the thermal paste in post #32, I would've been...

Advice wanted on budget Sandy Bridge build

Oh man, that sounds insane. I'd have no idea what anything was. Seeing dozens of identical Opera (for example) icons with no labels is not going to make for a usable setup. Yeah, I have a lot too, but I've never found grouping helpful. I don't think I'm familiar with that. Maybe I'll...

Used Windows XP, MS says product key is for disc with different service pack

I don't have the new computer yet that I'm planning to install it on, but I expect that to be fairly soon. The whole point of my going and finding a retail copy is so that I can install it on different computers in the future, but I'm concerned that if I activate it on my current computer just...

Wanted: recommendations of decent quality LGA1155 or AM3+ for under $140

Wanted: recommendations of decent quality LGA1155 or AM3+ for under $140 Can anyone recommend some quality LGA1155 (H or Z chipset) and / or AM3+ motherboards for under $140? ATX or I'd consider micro ATX. I'd like support for 16GB RAM and USB 3. Sata III and internal USB 3 would be nice...

Used Windows XP, MS says product key is for disc with different service pack

Thanks for your feedback. I've read that MS recommends that you apply SP2 before SP3, but that it's not necessary. Why it's recommended if it's not necessary, I don't know. Do you think it's important to slipstream SP2 and SP3, instead of just SP3? The main thing I'm concerned about is...

Used Windows XP, MS says product key is for disc with different service pack

I'm not sure what you mean by vanilla, but my understanding is that there are retail Windows XP discs in circulation with no service pack, with SP1, with SP2, and maybe others. This disc is SP1, but MS says the product key is for a disc with SP2. Damn. You're confident of that? You...

Used Windows XP, MS says product key is for disc with different service pack

I bought a used copy of retail Windows XP Pro. I got the "experience" folder with the product key label affixed to it and and what looks like a genuine XP Pro retail hologram disc. The disc says "Includes Service Pack 1", then "Version 2002". In an effort to verify that this is all legit, I...

Advice wanted on budget Sandy Bridge build

Ok, thanks. Understood. The appeal of the Celeron for me is that it's cheap, would be a big performance boost over what I have now, and the socket would allow me to upgrade to a better CPU, and possibly overclock, later if I need more power and can afford to spend more. Ok, understood...

Advice wanted on budget Sandy Bridge build

Alright, what do you guys think of these options? AMD: PSU: Antec NEO ECO 620C 620W = $50 (w/ MIR) Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-990XA-UD3 = $140 CPU: In the range of cheap Athlon II X2 to Phenom II X4 = $60-105 I figure even a lower end Athlon II X2 would be a big step up from my current...

Advice wanted on budget Sandy Bridge build

So it sounds like AM3+ and LGA1155 both have a decent chance of being dead-ends. Maybe the question is starting to be, what would have better resale value in a few years?? Since I'm on a tight budget, I'm just not sure if it's necessary or worth it. It's easy to get on a slippery slope...

Ok, thanks. Ok, good to know. Yeah, sorry, I just didn't know if it was really possible for under $300. Especially since at one point I was thinking I could use my case and PSU if I wanted, and now I've learned that I can't. Re: dedicated GPU, I was originally planning to use the...

Retiring P4 system - more value sold whole or parted out?

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I appreciate it. Yeah, I guess I was thinking more with ebay in mind. I guess many of the people here have a bunch of parts sitting around to combine with a given other part. Ok, thanks. I thought I was making an investment when I bought it for...

Advice wanted on budget Sandy Bridge build

Understood. This probably comes down to our interpretation of "plenty" or "much". What I mean is that I think the G530 will be satisfactory for now. So going from that to the highest end CPU that LGA1155 tops out at would be a big upgrade, no? Especially if I get that CPU when it drops to a...

Advice wanted on budget Sandy Bridge build

Thanks for the feedback tonytnnt. I'm not planning on overclocking the Celeron. I'm on a tight budget right now, which is why I'm going for the Celeron (which I think will be ok for now), but my understanding is that with LGA1155 I could move up to a much more powerful CPU later, and that with...

Advice wanted on budget Sandy Bridge build

Yes, low price. I expect its performance to be adequate for now, and I'll have plenty of upgrade potential with LGA1155 (right?). Oh, ok. This power supply has been in use for 6 years, with the computer on almost constantly. Was it decent? Ok. Any particular reason (if it's worth...

Retiring P4 system - more value sold whole or parted out?

I'm finally planning to get / build a new computer to replace my current P4 system. I'm on a shoestring budget and I have to decide whether it's worth cannibalizing the current system to do a new build or not, or whether I should sell the system or keep it as a backup. I'm thinking about...

I'm thinking about doing a budget Sandy Bridge Celeron build and I'd love some feedback on the parts I'm eyeing. Which motherboard to go with is the biggest question mark for me. First the standard questions, then some background info. I'm not concerned with gaming. I'm going to be...
