Sounds like a segment from an old show called "The Screen Savers". The guy installed every version of Windows up to XP, some distros of Linux I can't remember, and maybe some variants of BSD. He used XOSL to boot and manage each OS partition.
That... doesn't really work anymore. Somehow, Windows will sneakily reenable that service to download more crap you don't need (for example, this recent feature update). 3-4 gigabytes of bandwidth needlessly wasted.
I've created a scheduled task that ensures that the WU service is OFF and...
2nded. Ever since Vista (I think), it's not necessary to reinstall the OS from scratch after moving to a different board. At minimum you'll need to update some drivers (might be necessary to boot into safe mode first to remove everything from the device manager) and reactivate Windows, and that...
Server 2008 R2 Core had the option to disable WOW64 support. I think it was the only Windows SKU that had this option (can't speak for Servers 2012/2016 editions and their derivatives). Then again, you're stuck with a cmd or powershell-only interface, so you're SOL if you want a 64bit-exclusive...
So I did this trick with a few Win7 keys I've had laying around for the past couple of months. Out of curiosity, I reverted my Windows 10 VM again today (post-free upgrade period) and used one of the older Windows 7 keys I "pre-activated." Sure enough, I got my digital entitlement again once I...
Still can't find 24GB (6x4GB) for less than $90, which is what I paid for that exact amount back in 2011. Sorry, they may be coming down but as a consumer RAM prices still kinda suck.
I would just use the media creation tool again, except this time make an ISO, extract its contents to a USB drive or network share manually, and upgrade via clicking setup.exe within Windows. That's what I did with a couple of laptops and the rig in my sig below (also an EVGA x58 system) with no...
I like Irfanview. Plug-in support, flip-rotate commands, batch resize and manipulation support, and the interface is pretty minimal, though dated (fortunately the toolbar can be skinned). A 64-bit version was just released recently, too.
This is purely anecdotal on my behalf but some time ago I pulled a hard drive containing Windows 7 out of system with an Intel chipset and CPU and put it in a system with an AMD chipset/CPU just to see what would happened. Surprisingly, Windows not only didn't crash, but after several "New...
If you're just dicking around in the settings out of curiosity going "Huh, that exists. Cool," then yeah. Same thing can be said if you're looking around the system32 directory or the registry. If you know what you're looking for, not so much.
1) You don't have to name it God Mode. Hell, it could be called "SteveFartsUnicornsAndRainbows" just as long as the GUID is next to the name.
2) It's not really that useful as a shortcut. Pressing the windows key + the first few letters of what you're looking for will usually get you to that...
I'm really liking 10, and the desktop install went without a hitch, but I'm having some major problems with the switchable graphics on my touchsmart TM2.
First the default drivers cause the screen to black out and switch to improper resolutions so I'm forced to use the Win7 drivers supplied by...
I've actually had to block the images-amazon.com and ssl-images-amazon.com domains with NoScript due to that behavior. Slideshows, expandable images, and videos won't work anymore with those links blacklisted but it definitely speeds up browsing their site.
Windows 98 automatic updates don't work anymore and haven't so for a couple of years. IE just goes into an infinite loop of redirects when directed to the Windows Update page. I think the same could be said for W2K as well and I would not be surprised if the same happens to XP in a few years.
I remember paying less than $90 for 6x4GB (24GB) DDR3-1600. Sad to see the same amount and speed go for over twice what I paid for today, and for that to be considered a steal.
I would recommend against buying a PRS-600-- the interface is sluggish and the semi-glossy screen causes enough glare to make the thing unreadable at many angles, even in direct sunlight. A Paperwhite + Calibre would be much better IMHO.
Happens to me occasionally, even after upgrading to 37.0.2. I've noticed that it usually happens when switching/closing out a tab containing only a picture as the content i.e. no html.
edit: I should note that hw acceleration is disabled.
