    Turbo boost on laptop

Is it actually turboing "all the time" or is it just boosting to turbo states when lightly loaded - are idle clocks set when at near 0 utilization? You want the CPU to turbo so it can get work done and go back to an idle state sooner. If you want to mess with the heat output, I'd install Intel...

    Inland Professional 480gb SSD - Here's what's inside

That's interesting - see this review: https://www.tweaktown.com/articles/8676/inland-professional-sata-iii-ssd-75-480gb-madness/index.html Their pictures of the 480GB drive show the same DRAM-less design using the Phison PS3111-S11 - but their version has 8 NAND chips. So they've gone from 16...

Can't get Suricata to work offline with PCAP

Sorry, been meaning to reply to this since Sunday - just haven't had the time. Couple things: -You have duplicate signatures - either in the same rules file or duplicated rules files. You can try commenting out all the *.rules files in your suricata.yaml file (under the "rule-files:" section)...

Meltdown/Spectre Firmware Updates Causing Reboots for Some Intel Customers

Intel Publishes In-House Security Fix Benchmarks for Desktop

I can't see how the 3DMark tests are worth anything. The system configs they state don't include any discrete GPUs - so all benchmarks are done using the integrated GPU?!?!?! You think that might have been a slight bottleneck???

All Intel CPUs in last 10 yrs have critical bug to show protected kernel memory areas

Of course. It just looks like he's running Windows, and to my knowledge Microsoft hasn't pushed out a microcode update yet. (I could be mistaken) So unless they've patched the BIOS themselves, safe to say it's not running the updated microcode? (this is the reason I asked them)

I'm not seeing a BIOS update for that board (https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-Z170N-Gaming-5-rev-10#support-dl), so safe to assume these benchmarks are without the updated microcode?

Exploits for Intel CPUs (NOT AMD) Documented

The most recent consumer chip they had that doesn't appear vulnerable to Meltdown (Spectre is another story) looks to be the pre-Silvermont Atoms - so Bonnell due to the lack of out-of-order execution. I bet they have the dies still and 32nm has got to be real cheap now. Wonder how high they...

Yes (http://www.userbenchmark.com/resources/download/UserBenchMark.exe), run that and it will open a browser at conclusion that will get you a result page like this: http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/6263858 That is where the link to "all builds" is.

weird plug on old external IDE hard drive, what is it

Agree, IDE CDROMs used to have an analog audio cable that would route to the sound card. CDROM would be the DAC and soundcard would just accept as "audio in". Doing the real time "digital audio extraction" might put an unnecessary load on your single core Pentium 120...

Surface Book 2 Can’t Stay Charged during Gaming Sessions

From the article: I have questions: So that was the scenario they show causes it to start to dip into the battery while connected to a charger. So these means that with fully charged battery you're looking at 11.5+ hours of worst case scenario power draw before the battery is drained. I...

Intel Will No Longer Provide Per-Core Turbo Frequencies

To me, this seems really silly thing to not disclose - as it can just be derived through benchmarking. Not hard to find a benchmark that scales linearly with clockspeed, measure performance with several different combinations of number of threads and fixed multipliers - then extrapolate from there.

Gaming in 2017.. raw Ghz or Cores

Could disable Hyperthreading - at least just for gaming. Not doing much benefit with 16 cores already. Also could try setting the affinity manually - will get you a better idea of utilization vs spreading it out evenly.

Intel Says AMD EPYC Processors "Glued-together" in Official Slide Deck

Some of the 4 dies appear to be a mirror image of the others. I'm guessing this is a mock up vs AMD actually having two separate Ryzen dies. Could still be pretty accurate.

    Are M.2 SSD worth it?

Well, today I learned... makes sense. Windows 10 boots so fast from an SSD already, I'll probably have to test. Although, I really don't ever boot from a cold-shutdown. I either reboot, or resume from sleep which it appears fast-boot does nothing for?

    Are M.2 SSD worth it?

Hibernate or sleep? I usually disable hibernate and hyrbid-sleep on desktops, especially ones with SSDs. Sleep accomplishes the same goal and resume is instant. Just seems like a waste of writes to the SSD, drive space, and why wait for the reading it back to memory? Laptops are a different...

PowerColor RX470 - looking for drivers / all of sudden slow?

umm.. yes. Either you have a software issue, or the hardware is faulty (not likely). If it came down to it you could do a clean install of Windows. If the problem persisted, your RX470 is still under warranty - send it back. Here's my 2 cents - games usually do best with current drivers...

    Most reliable memory brands

Only RAM I've ever had to RMA was a Corsair stick - 1 stick in a kit died after about a year of use. To their credit - they did replace the whole set (4x8GB).
