Thinkpads are one of the easiest computers for DIY since they provide the full documentation online for FRUs
For the W520, here's the complete manual

I don't know about purchasing a reliable board, but if you're handy, the instructions will...
My Thinkpad T61's HDD died, so the question is what should I use for replacement?
Purpose:
I'm a TPM consultant, so clients aren't always super quick with providing one of their computers for me to do my work.
Home computer for movies, internet, any real computing that I shouldn't be doing...
Skripka, thanks for the info on Linux Mint. If I'm doing this, I want to avoid proprietary :)
Nightmike, thanks for letting me know about Arch & Deepin.
I haven't heard of XFCE, Flutebox, nor LXDE.
I'll be checking all of those out
Just to be clear, this will be a spare computer, so learning a new interface isn't terrible.
I worked on an Ubuntu environment years ago, the GUI was only ok.
The most annoying thing to me was that to do anything I had to sudo.
sudo mount /dev/usb0 /mnt/usb0
sudo chmod 777 /mnt/usb0...
Going to be installing linux on a Thinkpad T61 soon, and was looking around for recommendations on a modern linux GUI. Any recommended distros are welcome too.
Last time I ran linux as a home computer, it was back in the days of Gentoo 2, so KDE and Gnome were... primitive.
Generally when I...
I'm running Windows 7, and gave my fiance a windows 7 laptop for Christmas, to replace her aging macbook pro.
She's looks at the start menu search, but isn't able to search files, just applications, and would like that fixed.
Looking around for a solution, I see that MS had this for vista...
installed and running on the new ssd.
its a bit faster than the old ssd.
as I can't post pix of the crystal disk mark, I'll do it inline:
Test Samsung SSD 128gb Liteon SSD 128gb
Sequential Read (MB/s) 211.47 226.279
Sequential Write (MB/s) 124.386 201.514
Random Read...
I'm receiving a Dell SSD (DPN: K11MF) to replace my SSD as part of a dell Part Dispatch warranty issue.
It appears that the Dell drive is an OEM LiteOn SSD.
What I've found:
LiteOn model: LCT-128M3S
Controller: Marvel 88SS9174
SATA: 3gb/s
Does anyone have experience with this or...
RocketTech,
That Dewalt router is awesome, I may have to check into that for myself...
Scott,
the Cisco WiFi is great. Under $100, business class, vpn, etc. And its a business class, not something they're going to say "we can pick that up from Fry's"
/usr/home,
I checked out...
/usr/home,
Features, Requirements, & Price: sufficiently secure to enable guests to log on when they're at the office (mostly the kids/grandkids, as its a family business), powerful enough to access anywhere in the 6 room office (maybe 1500 sq ft).
Minimal management, as they only need one...
Looking for recommendations for a small office guest wireless router.
Should I just head to Fry's and get a standard consumer router, as its only going to be for guest access, or should I hunt down a pro Dell or Cisco wireless router?
What are the advantages, to correlate with the higher...
I've got a student license of Win 2k3 EE that I run at home for a file server, and various other things that I've wanted to test on a toy rather than at work.
When I built it, I used an external dvd drive to install the OS, and never bothered to put in an internal drive, so now I've got a sata...
I had a lab that I ran while at EMC.
You almost had to wear ear plugs going into that tiny datacenter...
2 cabinets completely full of 15k drives moves a lot of air, and more noise
Thanks, Jonowxeno.
Each short does show up as its own thing, which may require ripping each ISO into individual files, which I don't really want to do... but if that's what it takes....
It was really sad to look up the DVD on amazon, which owns IMDB, follow the link to the IMDB... and its a...
Well, MCM asks for the IMDB, TVRage, or TheTVDB reference ID for these, and there's no data for my DVDs.
Looks like I have to enter it by hand...
I'll try XBMC, but unless they pull from a different source, I think I'm stuck...
MCM sounds really nice.
I was checking out XBMC + ember media manager, MedaBrowser, and a few others.
I'll go check out MCM too.
My need is a bit more interesting, as these are DVDs of kids shorts, and you get tired of watching the same type of short (same main character) all the time, so I...
I've backed up a couple of my DVDs to my NAS as ISOs, and I'm looking for software to manage my DVD collection, before trying to backup and manage my whole environment.
Right now, its just a simple file structure tree which I know well, but I'd like something database driven to pull up...
I have a laptop with a 54mm Type II Express Card slot, and I'd like to get a pair of USB 3 ports. The cards range from $15-50, depending on location/brand/etc.
The question I have is: Does anyone know of an Express Card with 2x USB 3 ports that can provide USB 3 power without a dongle?
Any...
It wasn't too hard for me to make the transition. My desktop had gotten less and less use as time went on and I had less time for games. My work laptop sufficed. Then I was laid off and became an independent contractor, and still had no time for games
I picked up a refurbished Dell e6410...
Corsair RAM was the first ram I ever put in a system, and haven't looked back. Always my recommendation for builds due to quality.
I've never dealt with Corsair Customer Service, cause their products were so good, I never needed to.
-Steven
I've come to the conclusion that a whole new build is in order, as my old system became my server, and the laptop just isn't quite cutting it at this point for space.
I'm looking for a gfx card which will support at least 3x 24" monitors, as I'm looking to get more real estate for work. I'd...
I've done this two different ways.
The first (and preferred)
1. Crack open the drive via screws
2. remove platters
3. pull magnets
4. recycle into notepads (ball point pen works ok)
5. recycle magnets into fridge magnes
The non-eco method I did:
1. Drill several holes through the whole...
I was just in the hunt for such a laptop.
My current laptop is a Toshiba M105 14" core solo, 3-4 years old, and its gfx card or screen is starting to go. Still quite physically solid, but when I adjust the screen, its beginning to artifact with the pressure.
I looked at a lot of older...
Sorry, does "beast" mean awesome or awful?
:)
I think you mean its really awesome, and if its confirmed that its the samsung/dell SSD or intel ssd, I'll jump on it for sure.
Thanks,
-Steven
I have an opportunity to buy a Dell E6510 w/ a 128gb SSD.
Any information on who makes it/if its worth the premium?
I'd install win 7 pro on it, so I'd have access to the TRIM function, but I'm looking for additional information vs a 5.4k or 7.2k drive.
I'm still searching, and figured...
I ran win 2k pro until xp x64 came out, precisely because it was so similar to the 2k3 OS kernel. It was indeed a PITA to ensure that I wouldn't just brick my system on an upgrade, and I did verify that all the drivers existed before moving. Once I moved, it was smooth sailing, nary an issue...
hey, just found this and wanted to remark that I couldn't find the bottom mount battery being sold today. The (old) Thinkpad x41t does indeed have a "slice" battery, which is what I have.
I can't understand why they would have discontinued it by the x200 series, but here's a link to one that...
A second reason that I just though of why you have constant CPU usage is that the CPU may be actively checking to make sure there is no bad sectors/bits at regular intervals to alert you when your drive failed, but I'm not super convinced about that.
Good Luck,
-Steven
I've found adaptec 8-port sas cards for less than that RockeRaid on eBay. Consider LSI Logic as well, they are the industry standards.
The CPU usage is calculating what to write where. Each bit written to a given address on each hard drive in the Raid has to be used in a calculation for the...
I would go with Hitatchi (my Raid 1 setup) or Seagate, myself. WD should be fine as well, I'm not aware if any commands they would not have that the others would.
For streaming large writes ie video surveillance or video rendering, consider Raid 3. Slightly more efficient than Raid 5 in the...
Pylon, thanks for the tips. I'll keep checking these, and also check Craigslist and ebay.
I'll read up on the HP EliteBook, as I've never used one.
If there are any other cool sites you can think of to check for a gently used one, please chime in.
Thanks again,
-Steven
I used to be one of those consultants who would set up the EMC equipment onsite. Being Clariion, Celerrra, Centera, and Symm certified, I'm a bit biased, having not worked with NetApp systems before. I've been laid off, so I'm not as biased I might appear. The first thing I would ask in this...
