Remember how cack windows mobile was, why? cus they basically crammed too much in, they overcomplicated things.
To me, metro for the desktop (that we all have used this way back when) is oversimplifying things, i'd be fine with this if it wasn't so tied in.
It's fine for tablets, i think a 10...
Metro:
For tablets - Looks great.
For a media center 10" ui - Looks promising
For desktop use - fail
I've never said 'fail' before.
As a power user using metro will add probably an hour onto my work day.
hopefully we'll see a metro ui media center.
hopefully plugins like mymovies (the only one that really matters) will work
hopefully there tv tuner support
hopefully they'll iron out all the bugs present in wmc7 (at least)
get mymovies.
Mymovies is reliable and now supports tv show so it's a no brainer really. I used mb for a longtime but the reliability wasn't there, used to always have no covers showing or movies not showing up straight away after they're added.
I'm either going mad.. but is there not a way in windows to find out my total storage.
If i highlight all drives > properties it just shows one drive.
I want to be able to see my total storage for all local disk drives.
Anyone know a (preferably) small little app.
punch keystones and patch panel all the way...
terminating many rj45 ends can be a SOB to get the order right each time, even the pre made cables you buy often have a wire crossed. A guy at work was going to vito a patch panel at his house until he got onto his 3rd rj45 termination and...
in the real world the high read and write probably only get noticed once in a while, the access times are things that once you get used to using a top end system with an OS on a HDD feels like goijng back in time.
It all seems a little conflicting all this. I've not used WHS v1 but I have a couple questions for v2:
1 - If I turn off a WHS PC, take out a disk, can this disk be read and have complete files readable files on a regular PC?
ssd helped my setup a lot, even though the media is on a different storage drive having all those 1000's of thumbnails etc on the ssd noticeably improved things a great deal.
they're risking their lives in another country and some weasel is worried that they're buying pirated DVD's. Seriously someone got paid to actually put that crap in some report.
Because the PCI E sata controller hasn't yet showed up so I can't add the other 3 ODD to the computer.
I do bit of work for a some companies, DVD authoring etc for events, weddings etc. Often, unless it's in triple figures I can do the burning and lightscribing myself to save money. Having...
Just thought i'd post a quick log of my upgrade, might be useful for people justifying a new build

Not exactly idle but...
I've recently gone from 2gb amd 3200 to a 6GB i7 machine.
Before on the old 2GB machine with the usual desktop things open: firefox, pdfs, windows media player, outlook etc the comp would sit at about 1.5gb used. Now on the 6GB machine using the same programs etc It now...
Before using an SSD people get hung up so much on read and write speeds when the main thing they'll start w0wing at is the access times which will make a HDD raid0 array feel like grandmas windows 98 malware box.
I'm on the verge of getting a c300 ssd and I spotted Akasa selling "6GB/s ready" sata cables.
Is this just a marketing ploy or with a regular red sata cable you can't get anymore than sata 3GB/s speeds?
I'm pretty much on the verge of getting an i7 package from a UK company that offers them pre-overclocks and guarantees 4ghz from an i7 920 with stability, it's a pretty good deal, 6gb of ram, x58udr gigabyte board and a titan fenir cooler. I'm just waiting till monday-tuesday for the x6 reviews...
:(
hoping that this would be better than the i7 920, but it appears not to be. Is it just the i7's were and still are leaps ahead of amd?
I'm wanting to get a whole new build soon and was just holding out to see if the thuban was better than a i7920 at stock and overclocked
come on anand
Am i right in thinking that review sites often have to wait till a certain time before they can put their reviews up? which kinda explains why often many sites all have their reviews up at the same time.
Hopefully anand will have a review out soon, i need a chart to properly see the comparison.
Currently the 1055t looks after an overclock and a few more volts looks to be somewhere ahead of the intel i7 860, so if the price is right then it's a winner.
I'm out of the loop.
Unless it turns out to be a turkey i'll be getting the amd 6-core next month (hopefully if it comes out then).
As I am getting a new rig I was looking at memory and just thought, "ok, i'll get 12gb DDR3 (3x2GB dimms *2)". It's a comp for a lot of VMware and router...
Anyone know the deal with DDR3 and AMD?
I was thinking for a Thuban get 12gb (3x2gb * 2) but it seems nearly every am3 board has 4 dimms, which is really 8gb (the 4gb dimms are uber expensive).
@gwarren007 - that kind of motherboard looks great.
@enginurd - i'm in the UK so we don't have microcenters. Done a little reading and virtualising certain server os and tasks will require a decent amount of RAM...
I think 12gb is the way to go for ram, so that area is sorted.
@Shadowssong -...
Yesterday on engadget there was a post about 6 core amds coming in at $300 and today 12 cores for $300, tomorrow ftw.
If the benches are similiar what would be so bad about using one of these in a regular games machine? I used to game ages ago on a xeon and it was ok just cost more.
Currently, i'm on a 939 4200 dual core, 2 gb ram and some slow as hard drives, it's unresponsive and as you'll see is just impossible for my future needs. I'll list my needs and hopefully can get some input from folks who have experience in the same areas...
