Social Networking Sites Are a 'Modern Form of Madness'

I think social networking sites are a convenient way to maintain ties with people I'd otherwise A) fall out of contact with or B) don't especially want to see in person all that often. For those people who I can and/or want to see on a regular basis, the sites aren't essential.

Game Sales Shrunk, But Xbox Set Records in 2010

Guh. Why do they remain so hung up on retail sales for PC when the vast majority of PC game sales are digital? What do you mean, too? NDP is rapidly losing relevency. They'd better update their business model or prepare to close shop.

The PSP2 Is As Powerful As A PS3

Unless they can port games straight over, I doubt most developers will bother investing in the creation of triple-A titles specifically for the PSP2. Could be a profitable platform for some devs though if they go the digital-only route. We shall see.

Artists Lose Out as Fans Stop Burning CDs

Is the Death of the CD Looming?

I still buy CDs when there's some special bonus included. It's disheartening though when I rip a CD and am left with digital flutter in the last few tracks. Could be the software...could be a CD manufacturing defect or anti-ripping feature. The download versions never have that trouble, which...

    Japan Is Still Low-Tech&#63

I taught English in Japan in the mid-90s. Each day, we would fill out a hand-written lesson plan in tiny, tiny letters on a single page, in triplicate. At the end of each work day, we would tear out the carbon copies - one to be filed in the manager's office, and one to faxed to the corporate...

    Solar Cycle Sparks Doomsday Buzz

The Y2K bug was a geniune concern. Thankfully, governments and companies did what was necessary to fix or retire old code. It was a real threat, and we dealt with it. The people who panicked have only themselves to blame. The evidence for Global Warming, aka climate change, is irrefutable...

Netbook Market May Have Already Peaked

By the time they made a netbook with a dual-core proc, the price on ultra-portable laptops with real dual-core CPUs had already dropped lower than that of the netbook. So I bought the laptop. The only downside is battery life, but the battery life on dual-core netbooks isn't that much better...

China Home to Most Hacked Computers

Estimate is that 80% of US households have at least one personal computer. There are ~140 million households, so that's at least 112,000,000 personal computers in the US. Note that this doesn't include workplace computers. http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=380304

Software Sales Slipped 1% During the Holidays

Le sigh. Someone needs to clue CNET in on this phenomenon known as digital distribution. I bought one media-based release for the PC last year (Dragon Age: Origins CE), and everything else from Direct2Drive, Telltale Games or via Steam. In other words, a 25:1 ratio of digital versus retail sales.

Digital Recording Comes To The PS3 (Again)

It's news in that it's the first time that a console platform owner released first-party gear to enable this functionality. Consoles are almost always hooked up to living/family room televisions, so this helps entrench the PS3 as an entertainment (versus games-only) device. I imagine the content...

One in Five Divorces Blamed on Facebook?

Short answer: More isolated. Once we've purchased a device, we're invested in finding uses for it. Even when it arguably works against our best interests.
