I'll be getting my first SSD in my new Dell Studio XPS 16 in the next day or two.
Do I get a similar performance gains by partitioning SSDs as conventional platter drives?
Are there any other housekeeping recommendations for SSDs? I hear defrag degrades them, Window 7 (RC) has some new SSDs...
Hello all,
Finding the above information is a nightmare. I was going for the Studio XPS 16 with 128GB SSD, but I'd like to know the read/write speeds before I get it. Sales reps are clueless.
Guys on Dell Forums say that they use different manufacturers and so values are different, but...
Hi all,
I was thinking of getting a Dell XPS 16 laptop, and would like 8GB DDR 3 RAM.
While I was browsing last Sunday lunchtime, it cost 120 to upgrade 4GB to 8GB - bargain!
Then 3 hours later, there was no upgrade option at all.
Then 1 day later, there was a 6GB upgrade, +500 and an...
Hi all,
I was wondering which backup device I should get for my boss. It is a very small business, and the database should never go above 2GB (currently much smaller).
I need it to be portable, encrypted, and to cost < €200.
I was thinking of the Iomega eGo Encrypt or the Iron Key...
Hi all,
I am having trouble with a small 4 client, 1 server, and 1 network printer network I am trying to (half) setup for the boss. They are all connected to a Dell Powerconnect 2708 router.
The problem is all the PCs display a limited or no connectivity icon in the system tray after...
Hi all,
Just got my Gigabyte Radeon 4850 1GB, to replace my busted 8800GTX, but the fan on this is LOUD. It is a Zalman cooler, apparently at fixed speed.
Is there any way to slow it down? I have a fan controller (Scythe) and was wondering if it would be safe to use this control fan speed...
Hi all,
My graphics seem to have suddenly failed - The screen displays only 4 colours and has minimal resolution (640x480 I think)
There are also regular patterns of dots about the entire screen.
I can still see Windows and operate the machine, but I think the video card might be damaged. I...

I have a not so old Asus P5B-V motherboard.
As usual, with all PCs I've ever had or seen it takes a huge amount of time to POST and get started on loading the OS. Why is this? I could be wrong but powering up Macs, Playstations, Wiis, etc all take much shorter time.
I don't want to do...
Hello all,
Looking for recommendations. No overclocking for my single 8800GTX. Idle 79oC, Load 88oC. That thermalright with fan looks monstrous. I like lower noise levels.
Which would suit me better?
Thanks yawl.
Hello all,
What am I missing out with Vista?
I installed it last February but abandoned after about 5 weeks, mainly due to hardware/driver problems. On reinstall of XP, I found XP to be lightning fast vs Vista (Superfetch had settled down).
Has all this reversed with the SP1?
Should I...
I know the experts on this forum will evolve me into the enlightened air cooling one in 1-2 replies for my novice questions.
Q1. What is the difference between Core1/Core2 temperatures and the CPU temperature? Q2. Are there pins for connecting these thermal probes to, say, a fan controller...
Hi all, any advice for controlling my fans? I upgraded because my system was too noisy with the stock fan on my E6600. MB Asus P5B-V.
Unfortunately the stock fan had a 4 pin connector which has a PWM control of fan speed. The new Scythe fan on the Thermalright XP120 Extreme (monstrous BTW)...
Does Crysis spend too much time rendering irrelevant things?
I find that with thousands of individual leaves being rendered, in the search for realism, the whole game play suffers.
Out of the jungle performance is so much better. Maybe an option to reduce vegetation would provide much...
...It seems rubbish to me. :confused:Everyone dies every 10 seconds and respawns. It is like unreal tournament - an arcade style deathmatch. The maps I've played are like rat mazes - small and cramped - death around every corner.
It could have been so much better. The sniper round and C130...

Since I can't find any game better than the incredible, but aging, Battlefield 2, and not being a fan of Battlefield 2142, I was delighted to read somewhere that BF3 is in development. (Not Bad Company or 2142)
Apparently, it will be modern day again (thank God)...

I'm quite thick when it comes to most things computer, but was wondering how important CPU cache is?
Did I read somewhere that it will become more utilised in future applications?
Did I read somewhere that this may be the case, although originally it was supposed to be Vista exclusive?
I had Vista 64 installed, but am now back to solid XP. That is why I'm concerned!

Hello All,
I have major trouble with my USB devices and Vista 64.
I have my Saitek Eclipse II keyboard and Logitech G5 mouse which work perfectly. The only problem is that Vista keeps asking for drivers when I start Windows. If I select the "Don't Ask Again", Vista disables them (not...

I was thinking Logitech G11 (Don't need the G15 LCD) or Saitek range (My PC room has red wall paper - red LCDs would be cool )
Do those macro keys make a big difference in BF2?
Thanks yawl
Hi all,
My (kinda) new system has this problem. I'm using the X-Fi Elite Pro, with Sennheiser 280 Pro headphones in the rear (ie directly into sound card)
I can hear a very low level noise/interference everytime anything moves in the system - eg moving mouse or hard disc is spinning. This...
I am a beginner who had serious problems with overheating in my relatively new system.
I found the following things should be checked first - Obvious to most experts here.
1) Check temperatures with software application also - eg. Speedfan or Core Temp
2) Watch the temperature for a few...
Hello all,
I changed my mobo as I trashed the BIOS. Now I have my latest problem - grilled intel while idle.
I had to remove the fan and processor to return the motherboard, and reinstall them again. The HSF is bolted on but good, and there is no dust.
Do I have to reapply new thermal...

I was wondering, as I know that I waste an aweful lot of my life with Battlefield 2, how many man hours are lost with games?

I was really getting frustrated with my wireless Microsoft Notebook 4000 Mouse which was intermittently responsive for the last 2 days.

As the mouse worked at an alternate location I though...

After a few inital bumps, which were possibly due to me messing/tuning from the Vista tips stickie onthis forum, Windows Vista 64 running well.

Hello all,
Noob needs help.

Hello all,
I wonder which I should do. I have 4GB RAM on my ASUS P5B-V board (current BIOS flashed) with 32 bit Vista.
Now if memory remapping in the BIOS is disabled, I get 4GB showing up at POST(great) but only 2GB in Vista (boooo).
If memory remapping IS enabled then I only get 2.7GB...

Using Vista Home Premium for 2 weeks now, I have it running nicely.
Initially I has quite surprised at the prematurity of drivers (2 weeks ago), and I was regretting moving from XP Pro, but even in this short time things just keep getting better with Vista support.
Drivers for Vista seem to...
