Yes, it is backwards compatible as said, although some motherboards have issues handling them so you have to jumper-limit the drive instead. You'll know if you have to.

This might seem out of the blue, but have you checked your memory yet? I'd download and run memtest86 if you haven't yet, because those errors don't seem related to the disks at all.
