Definitely doable to spend a little more if needed. Overclocking isn't a necessity especially if it is already performing as well as needed for high settings and good framerate, but overclocking lets me future proof a little more.
I quickly put this together as a starting point, what's your...
Thanks, here's my answers:
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
--PC Gaming, media streaming/viewing, web browsing
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
--Not entirely sure on budget, would $500 even be enough for a significant upgrade...
Case is NZXT Phantom 410
PSU is Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W ATX12V
And monitor resolution is 1920x1080
On the list of minimum specs, for AMD it lists AMD CPU Phenom II X4 940, which I slightly exceed with my X4 955 (but barely).
Well... This may be quite the upgrade.
Maybe at this...
Hey guys, I've came to you with posts like these in years past and you always help me tremendously. I haven't upgraded much with my PC in a few years now, and I'm thinking the best bet for value performance will be a GPU and/or CPU upgrade.
My current specs:
XFX HD-695X-CNFC Radeon HD...
I recently built a new system and all has been well for about a week. However, now I am having an issue with my monitor (which is about 4 years old to be honest).
My problem is the display will randomly go black for about 3 seconds then turn right back on by itself. The blue power light...

I'm upgrading my ATI HD 4850 to a 6950 tomorrow. I have the most recent drivers on a fresh install of Windows 7 with my new system. My new graphics card is coming tomorrow - so since they use identical drivers, do I need to uninstall and reinstall the drivers? Or just plug and play?
Thanks!
Thank you all for your time, it helped tremendously. :)
Final Purchase:
$130 - AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache (promo code expires today 3/23. Tomorrow it should go back up to $140.)
$55 - BIOSTAR A770E3
$245 (after $30 MIR) - XFX...
That's exactly what I needed. I'm out of touch with these comparisons. Thank you :)
I am currently browsing newegg and benchmark sites for the perfect graphic card.
Thank you for showing me I can buy the inexpensive items from NewEgg and still make out well. This will leave much more...
I live in the Indianapolis area.
I honestly don't think I need any special features. I may have lost my touch with keeping up with technology lately, and barely know what a lot of what you mentioned is for.
I don't have a RAID setup, no Firewire accessories, just one video card, and don't...
Thanks for the reply, tiraides.
The Earthwatts power supply is somewhat new, about 6 months old. Had to replace it from Best Buy when my old one died.
That's unfortunate about my HD 4850... I 'just' bought it back in 2008, and is the newest major piece my system. If I do indeed need a new...
I've got an annoying problem that just began yesterday. I'll get about a 5 second lag that will make the music stutter, mouse non-responsive and skipping across the screen. This will occur randomly while my computer is under no apparent distress. I can be browsing the internet, Pandora...
I got it in March of 2006... a little late now :P But it seems to be doing fine still, hopefully no problems until my next upgrade.
What PSU would you suggest for my future build?
Thanks a lot for taking the time all :)
I have my Creative 5300 speakers connected to my new 32" Samsung LCD TV via RCA audio-out. The problem is the volume on the TV will not control the volume on the external speakers, it will only control the internal speakers.
I know that if the 5300 speakers were to have digital optical audio...
Same error here, but I'm trying to update my 4850 on Vista x64.
If you let the installer finish, it will successfully install the Catalyst Control Center but not the display driver. What I did was manually install the display driver in Device Manager. It doesn't specifically say "4850" like...
Thank you all for your replies, you were extremely helpful...
After giving it some thought, I ordered a new video card that I am confident will be wonderful for WAR and many other PC games coming out in the future even with my system...
I just ordered the SAPPHIRE 100245L Radeon HD 4850...
Thank you all for the replies, I've learned a lot about this new generation of video cards now... and Nvidia's evil trickery with their model numbers :D
So... I could definitely afford the EVGA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16.
So, now that we've got the card...
EVGA 512-P3-N801-AR GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 is better than EVGA 640-P2-N829-AR GeForce 8800GTS SSC 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16? (the 8800GTS I mentioned in my first post)
So is the 8800GT superior to the 8800GTS, even if the GTS is more expensive...
I haven't upgraded anything major in my system for quite a while, besides hard drives and such. Now that I'm playing Warhammer Online, I'm realizing the need for an upgrade somewhere. Here's my current system:
DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ @ 2.64 GHz
BFG GeForce 7900...
I went through an extensive Windows XP Cleaning process from a guide on the MajorGeek's forums, and I'm still having problems. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139313
Some more information to add... my desktop is Windows XP, and my laptop is Windows Vista. Both have the most...
I have a Linksys BEFSW11S4 ver. 4 router directly connected to my desktop and I connect with my laptop wirelessly. My problem is that the browsing speeds on my desktop are very slow. Webpages will take 15-30 seconds to load, while the exact same site will load instantly on my laptop as normal...
Thank you lots, very good advice.
When backing up, what software do you use to burn data to CD's? Is there nothing built into XP, or will I have to install something like Nero on the laptop?
I have a Compaq Presario laptop that is a couple years old. I haven't had any issues with it until recently in the past couple months, it suddenly slowed down.
Windows bootup takes a while (about 5 minutes), programs load slow, multitasking is slow, sound and video skips. But sometimes when...

I received my new LCD monitor from Newegg today, and I think it may have a stuck pixel.
It's red in color, but the thing is I don't see it when there is a black background, only white/other colors. But when I went to the site JScreenFix here...
Did I see a guide to calibrating LCD monitors somewhere on this site? I really have no idea on the proper way of doing it. Or maybe just a good all-encompassing link?
The post I quoted above shows 3 different links to use, are those the best?
Also, are one person's settings with this...
Here's a link to Gamespot with 2 great comparison pics between composite and component.
http://www.gamespot.com/features/6162297/p-2.html
You can really tell a difference there, and I have to note that the picture of their component looks like mine, so if mine do look bad, I blame the...
I made a post on the Display forum with lots of pictures showing the component quality of LoZ:TP on the Wii with my 22" FPS2275W monitor. Instead of posting identical pictures here, I'll just give the link to keep the board tidy...
Sharpness comparisons, and a good picture that shows the "interlacing" I'm talking about.
Sharpness: 100. Notice the interlacing near that top-left of Links head. What is that?
Sharpness: 100 closeup. You can vaguely see the horizontal interlacing, but the vertical lines only...
I finally received my component cables from Play-Asia for my Wii. Now I can actually use the component inputs on my 22" FPS2275W, which I've had for 2 weeks now for the purpose of console gaming in high def.
Well, ok, 480P isn't exactly high def, but it's something! Anyways, here's what...
