As the title says I am looking to get 2x monitors to use in portrait either side of my imac. I want to get something decent which will complement the imac.
What's my options?
I have an exe which at the moment I run with a command prompt so it's a silent install and I need to create an msi from with the following:
My knowledge of creating MSI is has up to now been using advanced installer simple mode but I have never had to run scripts etc. I can't work out how to...
I realise it's a horrible task, it's a horrible, horrible task!!!
Most users are running WinXP but this will be upgraded soon but that's another project. I would like to offer a backup solution ASAP though as we have nothing and it's just embarrassing (I have only been here 6 months and it's be...
I am looking for ideas for a worldwide online backup solution. I would like to keep is pretty simple where the user would login and just back up files and folders based on a set central script. So it would backup My Documents, profile details, desktop etc. Due to the size we would probably have...
I am looking to replace my WHS setup with something like the microserver. I ordered one a few weeks back but it hasn't turned up yet (they send it to the wrong address).
WHS has worked perfectly for over 2 years now but I have had to turn off backups as I am out of space. Also a few of the...
Does anyone think there will be a way to run an xbox (hdmi) though the imac display?
I am thinking to getting one but it would have to replace my current monitor as I don't have the room.
Thanks for that. I will have a go at removing it tomorrow evening (it's a quiet day tomorrow and Friday).
Just out of interest. What's the worst that could happen if I remove this entry?
This is mess. I have setup and managed DC's before but I have never really had to deal with this level of issues. There is no documentation so I am having to work out everything in the dark.
I really should have paid attention when I did my MCSE ;)
Anyway I ran DCDIAG /v (as it was one of...
update. As I typed the above I just worked out where the IP of the old DC has been reused. It's now the Avaya IP Office control box.
I don't know why pinging the old DC server name would return an IP and reply.
I am still having some issue with DNS and logon times on the network. Changing the DNS seemed to work but it's slowing down again.
I did some research and the old DC was also the default DNS, WINS, DHCP, TS server. It was on a different IP to the current server. Anyway today while tearing my...
Right I am not having much luck with this and the setup is such a mess I am considering just turing off roaming profiles and telling the users to use the network shares and they should.
I can't see any real benefit to having roaming profiles.
It's not that they lost business though, he brought them in to setup something (for example he got a company in to setup the new AD) and there has been no documentation passed over at the end of the job. Or if there was he didn't keep it.
Sorry I worded that wrong. I know where they are...
Hello All,
As mentioned previously I have just started in a new company as sole IT support and I am having loads of issues with the setup.
The previous guy outsourced a lot of the setups (new AD server, Exchange Server, Citrix server) to different companies and didn't bother to document...
I have amended the dns settings so they should now be OK but it's still acting weird.
For example I built a new PC (with XP) and added it to the domain when I go to log it in for the first time it takes about 5/10 minutes to allow me to change the domain on the login screen.
Roaming profiles...
Thanks I had figured the same thing. I have removed the odd server which I have since discovered was an old terminal services server which was retired a long time ago.
Hi All,
I have just started a new role as sole IT in a small company. The guy I replaced was not really into documentation so I am having to do a lot of digging to sort out small issues.
anyway the infrastructure consists of a Server 2008 DC which was also servs DNS and is used as a file...
I have managed to Nagios setup on a server running ubuntu 8.1 which is not too bad seeing as I have only used Linux sparingly in the past. I have managed to get it monitoring some basic services on a windows box but I am stuck now.
Is there a good resource with guides on what plugins and...
Anyone know of a good resource for setting up nagios for someone who has very little knowledge of linux.
I want a monitoring tool for our network (30+ servers) and nagios seems to tick all the boxes but I think I might struggle to get it setup.
Looks like I am out of luck then.
Here is a pic of the inards (this isn't my server it's just some photos I found on the web):
It's those thick fans which are the loudest.
I have the option on an Dell PE750 which is no longer being used in work (it's actually an Ironport C10). It's a pretty decent server and I was going to set it up as a WHS but it's ridiculously loud so it's not going to much use at home.
Is there anyway I can quieten this server down? It...
Thanks for the reply guys.
I wish I had known the PSU was no good but luckily I only spent £30 on it so I should be able to ebay it and get another. What's wrong with it by the way?
Is the AMD x3 good for overclocking?
Also is there any point in going for the 4850, I know it costs a...
I am looking to build a SFF gaming rig. I have purchased some parts already as they were on offer so I have built up a little collection over the past few months.
I am not really a PC gamer (mostly use the Xbox360) but a friend recently introduced me to Left for Dead and Steam. I would like...
I am just finishing up my whs box and I have 5x 3.5 hds and 1 x 2.5 hd in a Sugo SG02-f. I have an external DVDRW USB drive so I didn't need one installed. I also used a Lian-Li 3into2 cage.
It all fits (snuggly) but it will be in my garage so I am going to put some more fans in it as noise...
Thanks I found the 3in2 Lian Li unit so I will order one of them with the case.
Can I run a torrent client and usenet client in WHS?
Thanks, that looks interesting. I will have a read.
I am looking to build a small NAS/Fileserver. I currently have a readynas (before it became netgear) and it's been great but it's not exactly fast and this one is loud despite changing the fans etc.
I would like to build something small, quite and with low power consumption. It will be used...
Towards the end of last year I was in exactly the same boat as the OP. I just got sick of tweeking and fixing my HTPC (or VMC) and I would more often than not end up using the desktop and VLC. It worked but the wife was not happy and I wanted something stand alone that just works.
So I went...
Hello All
I have to review our backup setup again, not because it's not working but because it's a bit cobbled together and I would like to get a proper setup in place.
I have a pretty decent budget for this now but I am not out to spend as much as possible, I want to get a decent/easy to...
As promised folks here is Funstuie's guide to "How not to cable up a server room"
These photos are real and of a live and working server room/patch panel. As I mentioned before I have given up trying to sort this shit out as my colleague just doesn't bother cabling properly.
It's really hard...
