update. As I typed the above I just worked out where the IP of the old DC has been reused. It's now the Avaya IP Office control box. I don't know why pinging the old DC server name would return an IP and reply.

Right I am not having much luck with this and the setup is such a mess I am considering just turing off roaming profiles and telling the users to use the network shares and they should. I can't see any real benefit to having roaming profiles.
