You were the one who handed me the straws. You complained about Compiz Fusion not being useful for business purposes, and then offered up Microsoft's "The Surface" as a better implementation of its functions.
Remember?
It's your example, you explain it.
Nor is there a strict business need for games, media players or wallpapers. But then again, not everything revolving computers is geared directly towards business.
And while on the subject of Microsoft's table... how is being bent over a $5000 - $10000 table a more functional use than a tool...
But that's just hyperbole. I could just as well say that DOS has a better looking user interface than OS-X. I may loose all credibility by saying it, just like you have done, but there is no way of disproving my claim.
What eeyrjmr is pointing out is that the window, icon, menu, pointing device...
What if they save money on the operating system so they'll have more to spend on hardware?
The problem with arguments like these is that they can be twisted in any way you like. I have personally never seen any statistical evidence to support the assertion that Linux users spend either more or...
You don't really have to edit the xorg.conf to change the resolution.
In Ubuntu 7.04 you run the following command: "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", which launches a rather primitive looking but usable wizard that lets you manually set the resolution.
In Ubuntu 7.10 you click...
Who are you quoting here? I never said that. I understand perfectly well why Microsoft is not releasing DirectX 10 for XP. It has nothing to do with trust.
Eh... personally I doubt Vista will gain any greater popularity. Just do a search for Vista sales on Google, and you will find a great...
"FUD"?
Is that not just about the most abused word in the English language? It's sort of like "smurf" or "marklar".
The purpose of FUD is not to directly criticize a company or product but rather to instill a sense of distrust regarding said company or product. To convince them that it is not a...
I don't think the situation with XP -> Vista is in any way similar to 9x -> 2000. The move from Windows 98 and ME to Windows 200 was huge in terms of stability and security. Windows 98 was infamous for giving you the blue screen and crashing constantly (it was not a good operating system). I did...
Windows 2000 does recognize the second core, I've used it myself with my Core 2 E6400. However, if you had a single core processor installed prior to your Core 2 and you haven't reinstalled windows after the switch it will not recognize it automatically. You will need to install the ACPI...
I'm pretty sure that if you buy a Dell with pre-installed Ubuntu it would not be a clean OS-installation. I have yet to see a newly bought computer that had a clean installation of Windows on it. Most likely they will have DVD playback set up properly before they ship the computer, with all the...
Let me just sum up general's entire argument for you...
1. Linux developers are assholes who hates everyone!
[insert sarcastic remark]
2. Linux users are [insert nerd-stereotype]!
[predict doom]
3. Linux is... eh... I haven't used it for about 10 years, but I'm sure it's crap!
Look at all...
On the subject of market share, I think Windows owes the majority of its market share from OEM, and very little to any specific differences between the operating systems.
What is your source on that?
The numbers I've seen lists Linux around 3.5% - 3.8%.
I've also seen the number 2.8% for 2005 in a lot of places. It's arguably difficult to get reliable numbers on this.
Portable versions of Photoshop will run under Linux using Wine. I've been using CS2 some time...
I think there is a tendency for 'wishing makes it so' mentality when it comes to discussing operating systems. People sometimes forget that things need to be programmed and tested, and that takes time.
So have I, but it has not led to to know for instance which method of installing software is...
Lies and flame baits is all I hear. There are two imbecilities that constantly plagues discussions such as these.
1. Shortcomings inherit in an application or an operating system are not always a direct result of the programmers intentions. There has been development into making some Linux...
I think the 5 seconds delay would have been shorter if I had a faster CPU, yes. I'm running a Core 2 Duo @ 3.2Ghz and the CPU-meter maxes out for one core when starting the console. It's not really enough of a nuisance to be bothered with, as I seldom alter my settings.
All in all I'm very...
Card: X-Fi Xtreme music
Motherboard: Asus P5B Deluxe Wi-fi
Operating system: Windows Vista RC2
Driver version: 6.0.1.1261
Works: Yes
My only complaint is that it takes about 5 seconds for the Audio Console to appear after double clicking its icon. A quibble, really...
I don't think I will ever spend that kind of money on a phone, nor would I spend that kind of money on an MP3 player. Like InorganicMatter I got a Zen Vision:M after a lot of research. My phone only has the most basic features.
Although I can see how the touch screen has its advantages in...
Might as well use a random generator and read the voltages of that. CPU-Z pretty much always shows V-core at 1.2x volts no matter how high it actually is.
Better use BIOS readings.
1 fan, pushing the air back. Although using the Antec 180, I also have two 120mm fans at low speed very close to the heat sink sucking air through it. So, you could say I have three. :D
No, I am not buying the FX-74. I don't think I will be doing so either, and one reason for that is the meager overclockability.
Not exactly, they are part of the product you just bought. There's no inherit difference between them. It comes down to whether or not you take general...
When it comes to the FX-74, I get the feeling that it's a rather slow processor that has just been clocked to a high level to compete with the Kentsfield.
Other processors on the other hand (like the E6300 and E6400) have been clocked rather low considering how fast they really are, and these...
From what I've seen, the week of a processor doesn't change the overclockability as much as some people claim. It may be a difference between if you will be able to reach 4.5GHz on a Core 2 duo or not, but for anything around 3GHz+, it doesn't seem to matter much. And in the end, it's just...
Having 2000 (give or take a few hundred) posts only means you have just started trolling, or you have been trolling for a long time without being banned, or you just troll occasionally. I wasn't commenting on your post count, I was commenting on your behavior.
See above...
And you are a troll. Now, would you please explain yourself?
Yep, a troll.
No, the ability to overclock a system is not guaranteed. I'm also quite sure some people have bought processors that don't run completely stable even at stock speed, or processors that just barely survives their...
Hot hardware got their FX-74 to 3.215GHz, a smashing 7,1% overclock. source
Note the temperature (70 degrees), maybe this is what they mean by "hot hardware". :p
Meanwhile...
...not an entirely fair comparison, I know. But I doubt we would be seeing any overclockers line up to buy a quad...
I don't believe this review was written specifically for your benefit.
That is true, games are not the real world, admitting that is the first step towards recovery.
More benchmarks comparisons available here (german):

The review also overclocks the 4x4 and compares it to Core 2 Duos, Athlon X2's and Pentium D's.
The only one I've seen any estimated release on is the Q6600 at Q1 2007, costing $851. I wouldn't expect any 'mainstream' quad core processors to be released by either company until at least Q2.
On the topic of money... any idea of what the 4x4 system they used in the benchmark would cost...
Poor enthusiasts buys easily overclocked mid-range processors and... overclocks them. :D
As for quad core, I think the Q6400 looks like a reasonable option. Here it is overclocked to 3.6GHz. It would run circles around the FX-74 at this clock frequency.
2x FX-74 @ 3.0GHz vs. QX6700 @ 2.67GHz
The cards are on the table. At least the first ones.
We haven't seen how the 4x4 overclocks yet, but those power consumption numbers do not bode well.
Kyle: Here's ya some numbers in English. ;)...
