To make a long story short, it turns out the browser service requires the ICS service to not be disabled (it doesn't have to be set to automatic start; manual start is good enough) or the browser service will continually stop and restart, preventing the host computer from being browsable.
I...
I can ping box six from any other computer by name and IP. I can RDP into it. I can access all its shares by name. I just can't see it any network browse lists except for the Win2003 server's WINS, DHCP and DNS admin consoles.
Here's the ipconfig /all for box six:
Windows IP Configuration...
I've been scratching my head over a weird Windows network problem for a few months. I have six computers in a workgroup-style network and all but one of them is visible in every computer's list of networked computers. The sixth, however, never appears in any list of networked computers...
Got a weird problem with an XP box:
For one limited user account only, Windows will react to a logon attempt by briefly displaying the screen saver and then returning the user to the welcome screen. If the user attempts to logon again, the logon takes properly and the user sees their...
I have a DHCP connection without PPPoE. The ISP-provided bridge modems which I've been inflicted with stop transferring data until they are power cycled. DSL sync is not lost; the firmware just crashes of its own accord.
Does anybody make reliable ADSL2 modems that don't need to be rebooted every week?
My old SpeedTouch Home (ADSL1) never needed to be power cycled but every piece of useless junk--one D-Link, one Thompson--I've been stuck with since needs to be reset as often as a junkie needs a fix. I'm sick...
As far as it seems, none of the consumer routers on the market are worth buying. If you want something decent, buy a Cisco router and a stand-alone WiFI AP.
After reading a bunch more reviews I narrowed down my choices to between a Cisco 851W and running SmoothWall under Vmware Server. Given the 851W's $300+ pricetag, I'm currently running SmoothWall...
Is the WRT310N in the right ballpark or do I need to go higher?
Reviews on NewEgg don't suggest high stability but NewEgg reviews are not encouraging for any router I've looked at, either.
I'm looking for a reliable consumer router that can run for months on end without spontaneously rebooting, refusing to route packets, freezing completely, or needing to be power cycled. I've yet to find a single router that doesn't have a bunch of user reviews stating that crashes are a routine...
Not sure which forum is best for this, but I'll try here first.
I've got a weird problem with MSIE 6 as shipped with XP SP2: it won't display webpages anymore. If I type in a HTTP address into the address bar, IE waves its progress flag for about 30 seconds before concluding that "the page...
I have an odd problem here.
For some reason or other, my system does not detect the connection of an eSATA enclosure. If I power up with the enclosure connected, the enclosure is detected and appears as a removable drive (AHCI must be OK for this to happen). If I connect the drive with the...
What software are people around here using to keep files synchronized between multiple computers?
I have trialled a lot of file sync tools to keep my laptop and desktop in sync, but everything I've tried so far (Syncback: very slow, ViceVersa: incompatible with junctions, SuperFlexible...
It's quite simple to disable driver signature checking for Vista below SP1.
It is far more likely that Vista's signed driver requirement exists to placate the HD-DVD and BluRay DRM enforcement bodies and to allow MS to extort more money from ISVs than for any purpose intended to benefit the...
In XP, is there any way to put a swap file to a drive that has no drive letter assigned and is only accessible through an NTFS volume mount point?
Failing that, are there any tricks to persuade XP to allow the use of drive letters A and B for non-removable hard drives?
(I have a dedicated...
You'd be best off to ask this question on a dedicated CG forum like cgtalk.
There are a lot of suitable tools out there but what's best for your purposes will depend on your needs and budget. People on the CG boards will have the experience to give you useful advice based on what you...
Do people here have any particular recommendations or suggestions for software to manage archiving data to DVDs?
I have a fair collection of data (photos, music, video) that regularly grows but existing files are basically never modified. I'd like to be able to archive these things to DVD for...
I make very extensive use of Remote Desktop over my LAN. Unfortunately, even at 100mbps, RDP is less than fast when dealing with graphically intensive applications. How much of a practical RDP performance boost should I expect if I upgrade to Gig-E?
The 2025WM is one of many Viewsonic models which won't turn on when connected to certain video cards via DVI. It's a design flaw that repeated RMAs won't fix.
If you don't mind a panel lottery and crappy offshored support, go with Dell. Otherwise, stretch your budget to a Samsung 215TW, HP...
The thing with OCZ RAM is that it requires 1.9v to work properly. The JEDEC standard for DDR2 is 1.8v. Not every board will break the JEDEC standards by powering DDR2 with >1.8v out of the box, even though that's what OCZ's SPD chips ask for. IMO, this is a problem with OCZ playing fast and...
$1200 USD refurbished (!).
I'll put up with the compromises inherent in an S-IPS LCD, thank you. :)
Spec sheet, if you need it. Power consumption is 200W.
No, the vulnerability is that PPTP relies on passwords for security and exposes enough information to crack passwords offline. While current attack tools can only break weak passwords, but there's nothing stopping anyone from using a rainbow table attack capable of breaking strong passwords...
Uhh, the whole point behind a VPN is to send sensitive data over untrusted network links. If you can trust the network infrastructure not to crack your PPTP sessions, then you don't need a VPN in the first place: just send your data in the clear.
PPTP security:
http://asleap.sourceforge.net
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PPTP
The only known way to fully secure PPTP is to enable EAP-TLS security. EAP-TLS requires certificates, which makes it no easier to deal with than IPSec or OpenVPN.
Each to their own, however:
With an S-IPS display I don't have to move the monitor every time I move my head.
With S-IPS I can do things like quickly check my email without needing to sit down in order to read the screen.
When I'm showing stuff to other people, they can look over my...
Bad idea. The Dell panel lottery means that the specifications you see in Dell advertising generally aren't the specifications of the monitor you receive. Dell likes people to think the 2007WFP is S-IPS, but pretty much all 2007WFPs shipped these days are actually S-PVA.
FWIW, PPTP is grossly insecure and should not be used unless no other option is available. It's not a big deal to run IPSec or OpenVPN on pfsense; both are far more secure.
If you really want to use PPTP, however, it runs over port 1723 and IP protocol 47 (GRE).
The LCD you have uses a crappy TN panel designed for low cost and speed. TN by nature produces horrid blacks. Banding is because the panel in that monitor is only capable of 6 bit color--the extra two bits needed to show 16.8 million colors are faked using dithering. LCD technology has...
It's a really common problem with Viewsonic monitors. Google "viewsonic EDID repair" for tons of complaints and fixes that worked for some people, but not for others, and certainly not for everyone.
The only 100% fix for the Viewsonic problem is to buy a better monitor.
Looks like you've run into the infamous Viewsonic EDID problem. You might want to see if any of these fixes help before shelling out for another monitor:

With the exception of a handful of new PVA panels, IPS is pretty much the only game in town for accurate color rendition and high contrast at all angles. TN, MVA and most PVA panels can't come close in this area. The other technologies will beat IPS in some image quality areas, but most of...
I have the LP2065 and use it mostly for office applications followed by photo editing and some video viewing. No complaints.
There is no reason to buy the Dell unless you're seriously strapped for cash and your needs are sufficiently basic that a low quality S-PVA panel is good enough. The...
I recall reading about panel lottery problems with the L2000C when I did my research before buying my 2065. I cannot find a reference at the moment--my information may now be out of date.
LG 2000C is a market-by-market panel lottery. In some parts of the world it's S-IPS. In other parts of the world it's something different. The North American version is not S-IPS.
LP2065 is S-IPS. Unlike what would be expected from other panel technologies, the only noticeable color shift...
Excluding Eizo's offerings, the top end 20" 1600x1200 screens are:
NEC 20WMGX2
HP LP2065
NEC 2070NX
Dell, Viewsonic, Samsung, LG, etc, are all 'value' monitors in comparison. Don't expect a lot in terms of reliability or quality.
