    Funny Tech Support Call

This was as good as a recent CNET Buzz Out Loud podcast where a caller said that DirecTV had terrible porn but Comcast's new Xfinity might. http://www.cnet.com/8301-19709_1-10456116-10.html?tag=mncol;title

5 Ways Linux Shoots Itself in the Foot

I used Linux (Kubuntu) for six months in a dual boot configuration. From what I can tell, Linux is usually meant for people who are so new to computers, that they don't mess around with much outside of email, word processing, and internet surfing, or it is meant for those who know CLI as well...

Preview Last.fm, Facebook and Twitter on the Xbox 360

What is the point in this service? There are services like Raptr and GamerDNA that can send messages to Twitter and Facebook about your gaming habits. Why is last.fm included, anyway?

Sony Sued Over PS3 Firmware 3.0 Problems

If I remember correctly, the updates to the PS3 software are not automatic. The system tells you an update is available and you must then accept the TOS and confirm that you want to update. Since I haven't had any issues with V3, I can't remember exactly, but I think the user had to download...

PS3 Sales Jump After Price Cut, Slim Introduction

In the U.S., the XBOX 360 has sold the most units. What are the worldwide sales figures for both the PS3 and XBOX 360? Which one, globally, has sold the most units?

    Apple: The New Microsoft

I don't think the article was very negative, it stated what many people have known all along. Hopefully, the DOJ, FCC, and the SEC will watch them more closely to keep them from being a total monopoly in the mobile phone market. A few days ago, Leo Laporte made a comment on Buzz Out Loud that...

Study Identifies Fastest Internet Speeds Among Nations, States

The problem is not entirely in the billions spent on subsidies, but in how they are spent. Some companies horde the cash to please investors, others spend it in other ways that don't help consumers. In Japan, the rates are subsidized to an extent. The rates bigdogchris quoted are nice, if...

Study Identifies Fastest Internet Speeds Among Nations, States

I'm not at all surprised that the far-flung, sparsely populated areas have the slowest connections. Many cities are getting better connections since the densities make it economically viable. There's just not enough profit to be made providing internet services to cities that don't have at...

Laptop Searches at the Border to Continue

I should have been more clear. At the border, no one, American citizen or not, has any fourth amendment rights. This means you can be searched without cause. However, when it comes to encrypted data on a hard drive, does a target have to give up a password? An example would be the United...

Laptop Searches at the Border to Continue

That article is a bit old, I wonder if the laws have changed. When crossing international borders, your laptop should always be as empty as possible, just in case. I know of several businesses that tell employees to upload all relevant data to a company server and take a laptop that has only...

Stanford University: Media Multitaskers Pay Mental Price

Multitasking does have its place, driving is not one of them. I was at a stop light and almost got hit by an oncoming driver. She was multitasking, talking on a Bluetooth headset and eating a KFC dinner, with utensils, all while driving.

U.S. Internet Speeds Causing Digital Divide?

I live in WV. Specifically, a bedroom community between the states two largest cities. This is the only internet provider here that can go past 1.5 mbps and we pay about $39. The service is not very reliable and in order to get halfway decent rates we have to bundle everything. Around here...

    Xp Pro 64 bit

Newegg does have XP 64-bit, but it's not for download. You may also be able to download it from MSDN. University students may also be able to get it from MSDNAA. I'm a little suprised that someone would be looking for the XP x64 edition, since it's has flaky drivers and compatibility issues...

    Xp Pro 64 bit

The main difference between the Newegg and Microsoft copies of Vista is the speed of delivery. MS allows for a digital download whereas the Egg has to ship it to you. I would buy the OEM edition for less and wait for it to arrive.

Do you have to use a 64 bit Vista with a dual core setup?

I have two computers, the one that's in my sig is my main PC. The other one is seven years old, has a 2Ghz Pentium 4, 1 GB of Rambus RAM, and a GeForce 7 graphics card. It runs Vista...just not very quickly.

Do you have to use a 64 bit Vista with a dual core setup?

You don't need to have a multi-core setup for 64-bit. You should have a large amount of memory to see many of the benefits of 64-bit. Although Vista (32 and 64) doesn't require a multi-core processor, it is recommended.

    Xp Pro 64 bit

I'm not sure you can download XP 64 legally since it was largely offered only to OEM's. You can, however, download Vista from the Windows Marketplace here.

    Which Vista

I agree with the claim that the Ultimate edition is largely useless to most home users. If you buy any of the OEM editions of Vista, you must specify which of the bit's you want, either 32 or 64 (at least at Newegg). Also, you cannot contact MS and have them send you a 64 bit version if you...

    - My Order of Last Monday

^^^ I have a similar computer. I bought it in 2001 and it's being retired, with largely original components, for a newer one. It's only flaw is that it's sloooowwww. Most PC equipment can last a long time, especially if there are no moving parts. I'd say the average lifespan would be about...
