The game I'm most concerned about is Rift, which doesn't play nice with AMD drivers. Would something like a 570 be better for surround?

Well, my experience is that it works very well. I've been using it to stream to my ipad since Friday when I got it. You literally download the app, install the program on your computer, add folders, and then on your iPad you select a movie from the server and start streaming. Awesome quality, no...

Air Video will stream movies from your PC, converting them to proper format as it streams. So basically you can stream any format. As for resolution, it will also convert any video higher than 720p down to 720p to be played.

And what's great is that you can stream all of the movies from another PC/Mac straight to your iPad over wifi or 3G via the AirVideo app. I got the 32GB model just in case, but with all the streaming this is capable of, its probably overkill.

How old is your MacBook? 2.5 hours sounds really bad. I used my MacBook constantly since August 2008 (until I got my iPad) and it still gets a good 5 hours to the battery or more if I turn the display down and don't do much.
