    Looking for a Mini-ITX case

I'm looking to make a similar build myself. Essentially I want the smallest, most well ventilated case I can find that has provision for an expansion card. HTPC-ITX7 looks good, but significantly larger than the Travla C292 which would be preferable I have no need for an optical drive. The...

Thanks for that - now I just need to find someone who'll ship the Travla to the UK without charging me $130 in shipping!

Smallest Mini-ITX case with PCIe Support?

Either this one or this one. They should be relatively cool. Yeah, I was meaning to ask about HSF recommendations. I take it the stock Intel job won't do?

Smallest Mini-ITX case with PCIe Support?

Thanks for that - it is worth of consideration. On the CPU front, we have the Core i5 3470T which is a 2.9GHz dual core part (so not sure why it's an i5 in the desktop space) that draws just 35w, and the 45w 3770t 2.5GHz quad... they are pricey though - how would an undervolted 65w part stack...

Smallest Mini-ITX case with PCIe Support?

That's really useful, thanks! Surprising there are no mITX cases with touchscreens though. Are there any "clip-on" LCDs or anything similar that can help to make a more portable unit? Also with regards the Travla case, would I require a better HSF than the Intel one? Is it "safe" to use a 77w...

Smallest Mini-ITX case with PCIe Support?

With a 65w CPU that shouldn't be a problem. I ran two HDDs and an E8400 in a Shuttle D10 with a 100W PSU. Speaking of the D10, you wouldn't know of any mini-ITX cases with a 7-inch or so touchscreen? Or even an all-in-one with a PCIe slot? These are all options...

Smallest Mini-ITX case with PCIe Support?

Hi, I'm looking to integrate a PCIe x1 or x4 expansion card into as small a PC as possible without having to do extravagant mods (back in the day I actually connected a PCIe x1 card to a Merom Mac Mini via its WiFi port and it actually worked). I can work with half-height but ideally I'd like...

It's a general purpose PC with a video capture card. I can buy parts from anywhere in the UK, but the usual "best places" are Amazon.co.uk, Ebuyer.com and Scan.com. It was mostly be used in an office environment. No additional peripherals needed over keyboard and mouse but USB 3.0 ports might...

Let's go for the i3 and the budget mobo - as long as it can handle a non-GPU expansion card in the PCIe slot.

Well, I get the idea that the requirements are going to define the budget as there are only a limited number of components that will do this specific job?

    Recommend a Mini ITX Config

Hi, I'm looking to build a tight, compact mini ITX system with the following requirements: * As small as possible * Cheap but durable, it'll be ported about a fair bit * Core i3 or i5 processor * RAM not especially important - 2GB min * Room for low profile expansion card (not a GPU)...

Still running an s3400t here with the quad core 2.5GHz CPU - has never let me down, until now, when the NVIDIA 8400 died horribly a week back, leading to a humiliating drop down to the integrated GeForce 7100. We're in the 28nm era - are there are low power, low profile GPUs that don't...

    Recommend an Ultrabook?

Bandwidth for 720p60 video from an uncompressed source is 2.6MB per frame. You can usually compress that losslessly with a Huffman-derived codec with about 2:1 to 3:1 compression efficiency. So yes, about 200 to 300GB per hour. I'm not talking about h.264 movie playback.

    Recommend an Ultrabook?

SSD won't cut it because an hour's worth of HD capture will be 200-300GB. I guess all I'm looking for is an ultrabook that supports mSATA drives you can boot from and has a conventional drive bay - like the Acer Timeline Ultra M3 does. I took a look at the Lenovo Thinkpad 430 and aside...

    Recommend an Ultrabook?

Thanks everyone for your input. The Acer I was loaned had a 20GB SSD, with 16GB for caching and 4GB reserved for the hibernation partition. It was OK and reasonably fast, but nowhere near as fast as a native SSD system - so for that reason I'm not so keen on the Asus. The X1 looks...

    Recommend an Ultrabook?

For four years I've been using a Dell XPS M1330, and I've made a number of upgrades - CPU upgrade from 1.5GHz dual core to a 2.1GHz dual core, 512MB to 4GB and I've ripped out the optical drive to add a 500GB mechnical drive and put a 256GB SSD into the main HDD slot. The screen on this thing is...

Pay as you go data in the US?

Hi, Visiting San Francisco next month, and rather than getting bummed heavily by the hotels for internet access, I'd like to buy a pay as you go SIM for my laptop. Last time I was in the USA in October 08, the best deal I could find was 5mb data as part of a $9.99 SIM (!!). Are there...

Intel 'bundling' graphics processor with new Core 32nm CPUs

I'm assuming that these new GPUs will be like GMA950 and 4500 and will have no hardware overlay support? One of my apps uses it extensively, and it runs like a dog using Intel integrated graphics of any persuasion due to a software driver being used instead of a true hardware overlay.

    Advice to ultra-compact mITX build?

Hi, I'm looking to build a mITX system with either socket 775 quad core or one of the new Clarkdale set-ups. I'm looking for the smallest possible set-up, factoring in that I will be using one or two SSDs (no bulky desktop drives required). An optical drive is not necessary. The only...

    Should i dump my QX9650 for a Core i7 920?

With video editing and encoding, the i7 totally annihilates Core 2 Quad, certainly in my experience any way: x264 encoding for starters shows a night and day difference. I doubt you'll see much with gameplay however.

The highly rated HP Pavilion Slimline PC thread

The USB dongles I've tried have pathetic range, and the room I currently have the s3400t in requires the use of a BIG antenna to get a decent signal. If there's a cheapo USB dongle that'll let me connect up my big antenna, that's great, but I've yet to find out. Do you have any suggestions...
