Drivers are, more than likely, the culpret. The 8xxx drivers are a bit different than the 7xxx drivers. If he uninstalls his current set and then downloads/installs current drivers, that should aleviate this issue. Also, mostl monitors have a driver now so maybe use that as well.

In all honesty, the "tweaked" drivers from either NGO or Omegadrivers are very good. I have been using them for all my ATI products for quite a number of years. I have used them on a 8500LE, 9600XT x800PRO and current x1900XT. So if you want, try them out. They don't hurt your system any.
