dSLR choices... help me choose! Canon/Nikon

I voted for the d70 since thats what I ended up getting for my fiance last summer. She's a nikon person though so I was only comparing within their line. I went for it primarily because it took CF cards like the higher end nikons, unlike the d50. She's shot around 2000 images on it so far and...

    web site file retrieval question

Depends on whether or not that functionality is enabled on the webserver. Apache will allow you to do directory listings in a browser, but it has to be enabled, which it doesn't look like it is.

    Time to cool the XBOX

I put a larger fan in my xbox to try and reduce noise rather than reduce heat. The main problem I had was how tight of a fit the hard drive tray is, so I had to do some cutting to get it to workout right. Not too hard of a mod though,so you shouldn't mess anything up. The xbox heatsink is pretty...

Can someone recommend a good WAP book?

I learned WAP from this book. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0471135852/sr=8-1/qid=1153972105/ref=sr_1_1/104-1684211-8539164?ie=UTF8 The book is more general as it not only talks about WAP, but also wireless standards and history as well as business models. The books is by no means a...

    Another blog question

Well you're going to need a webhost that supports some dynamic language like php/java/perl/.net and a database. This probably won't be free and you'll still need to maintain the software. For search engines how unique your name is will play a big part. I would guess the livejournal or one of the...

    htpasswd username & password logging

Okay, a file should work too. Two links below should give an idea how to do it. http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/logs.html http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_setenvif.html#setenvif Looks like you can check Request_URI against the scripts name and redirect logging to your custom log.

    htpasswd username & password logging

I'm assuming you're running apache. You may be able to use conditional logs to log all access to a specific domain or directory to a different log, assuming everything in that domain is password protected. You could also look at using a piped log and run everythihng through a perl or php script...

    Search Engine Optimizations

AFAIK neither google nor yahoo do this. googles stance is that they let the content of the site determine the ranking as this will provide the most relevant results to the user. Pay per click ads are reserved for the sidebar.

what do i need to make my videophone wireless?

You could probably use one of the wireless game adapters. I have a netgear g adapter and I can connect my xbox or pc's via an ethernet cable. I'm guessing any device with an ethernet cable would work. As long as the phone has a way of getting an IP address it should work.

PHP and Mysql - issue with submitting html to the db

As long as you're dealing with mysql, you might want to use mysql_real_escape_string() instead of addslashes since it uses mysql's backend for escaping the string. It looked like there were two or so other characters that it escaped that addslashes doesn't. You should also consider using...

    Another blog question

What do you mean by higher rankings? I have both a livejournal and my own blog, the journal I use has a module for uploading your entries to livejournal so i keep them both synchronized and use livejournal as an external backup. The main reason I chose a host my own was I wanted to be able to be...

    Search Engine Optimizations

So yes, basically SEO is an ongoing process since the wbe is constantly changing. How often you have to update will depend greatly on how popular the terms you're trying to rank highly for are. Practically you'd probably need to make even just a few changes every couple of month as search...

does two drives faster than one??

AFAIK partitioning won't gain you any speed because there's still only one controller in the drive doing the reads and writes. Two drives in RAID 0 will show an improvement, at least based on this article http://www.overclockers.com/articles1297/

what's the longest time without turning off your computer?

Folding is a distributed computing app from stanford. I believe it is a simulation of the process that results in the creation of proteins. The belief is that errors in this process can be the cause of some diseases, so by understanding it we can possibly come up with cures. The app uses your...

    question about which java vm

I've only used the SUN JDK's. They can be a pain to install because at least on FreeBSD, you needed to download about 4 different port sources from sun. Once setup it does work well though. Have had no problem with axis, tomcat and struts.

what's the longest time without turning off your computer?

Longest for main rig is probably 3 weeks or so. Fileserver about 3 months, though it only got rebooted because I needed to recompile the kernel Damn why'd he stop at 800,000, he was almost to a million. That would deserve a prize or something

Wireless router, and a wireless printer?

What do you mean by connect the wireless router to the wired computers? It shouldn't matter how the devices are connected to the router, they all ought to be able to see each other. If they have the same ip address range then that should be the case.

    Email SQL PHP Search Criteria

If you use query caching in the database, it might be easier to just have the link point to a script that reruns the search(since its cached there should be much of a penalt for looking it up again) and then emails it to the user rather than stuffing it all into a url. You can also use...

have 4 drivers.. RAID5 with hotspare.. or RAID 1 with hotspare and extra drive???

this really depends on how much space you need. If you'll never need more space the 2 of the drives then using raid 1 is fine. A configuration I like to use is 2 drives in raid 1 for the os and 3+1 hot swap in raid 5 for databases, web sites, or any other data.

    Why isnt my PC Quiet?

If you want silent fans I recommend the Nexus Real Silent line. They don't move a ton of air but they are dead silent. Using Internet Explorer. Secure?

One reason at least used to be that some intranet applications only rendered properly on IE. One place I worked had incident reporting software that worked this way, so we were forced to use it. Ultimatley I think IE can be secure, just takes more work.
