"Does PowerDVD 8 support HD DVD playback?
No, PowerDVD 8 does not support HD DVD playback. However...
Power dvd 8.0 dropped support for HD-dvd.
The drive ships with Powerdvd 7.0 oem. Once you download the necessary patches, it plays both HD formats fine.... (well, as fine as Powerdvd does... <cough>) fancier ($$) versions of 7 have better sound support.

Random thoughts at 3:30 am:
-Er, why did you unplug things just to blow the dust out?
-How did you "clean out the dust mites"? did you use a vaccum? they build up static charge and can toast things.
-Did you ground yourself correctly during the entire process, both when cleaning and...
not knowing what exactly you have in mind...
but consider using e-sata.

Worst card? Hmmm. How about most disapointing:
Number 9 Revolution IV
They promised great performance, never released drivers that helped 3d performance a damn, retreated on what they said the card would do, and then finally closed up shop. And it wasnt a cheap card, either.
Anyone else jump on this? If so, did your order ship yet?

You need the lightscribe media to burn a pic on the top of the disc. It has a special layer on top that accepts the image. You burn the disc regularly, and then flip it over to get the image on the other side.
You can, of course, just use regular media if you want... just no pretty pics...
The other media types are coming literally any day now. The drives havent been out long. There are several media companies coming out with the media, so the price of the lightscribe-able media should come down once the supply stabilizes.
You can get lightscribe drives from HP, LaCie, and...
1. Check ALL connections. Something stupid might be slightly loose and causing odd behavior.

I usually start with:
1. Clean all the extra crap loading into memory on startup. (either by telling the programs in their options to not come up on startup, or cleaning em out of the registry run key, etc)
2. Uninstall crap software that's most likely gumming up the works.
3. Check and...
