I just built a new rig:

CPU Intel i7-3770K
Mobo ASRock Z77 Extreme 4
Cooler Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
RAM Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB x4

Ok, I purchased the Sparkle card and now I have an issue:

I have a fairly old rig (see "Server Rig" in sig) that I am still looking to squeeze a few more hours out of, and I am contemplating adding a video card to it, I currently have a MSI NX8600GT in it, and I am running two monitors on it, but I have another monitor that I would like to add to the...
Thanks for the help w1retap,
Is it worth the wait for the 9400GT (that you mentioned) to come back-in-stock, or will I be able to get by with the Sparkle 8400gs w/ 512MB?
Also I find it odd, but the MythTV wiki [supported cards] doesn't like the 9400GT as a supported card for VDPAU ???
I...
I am building a MythTV system at my house (on the cheap) using Mythbuntu and 2 used pc's I picked up for short $:
2x Compaq Evo D510s - 2.4ghz P4, 1.5GB RAM, 500GB ide HD
1x HDHomeRun - To capture HD QAM channels from my cable company.
Now all I need is to purchase a PCI video card that...
Thanks for your help rflcptr,
I am buying a used computer from a local college, and I have a choice between a:
Compaq Evo D51s
or
Compaq Presario SR1010NX
The Evo I believe is a 2.4Ghz P4 , while the Presario is a 2.7Ghz Celeron. So I assume the Evo would be the better machine to go for...
cyclone3d,
I didn't notice it until after I posted this thread, but according to my last memtest run my clock settings have been reset to default (FSB from 370 to 266) this probably explains why the memory "seems" to be working, I am going to reset the OC settings and report back my findings...
I recently was noticing some issues with my "Server Rig" (see sig), and I traced the issues back to bad memory by running memtest86+:
:eek: That's not good.
I have two of the following sticks:
DIMM0 = 2GB
DIMM1 = empty
DIMM2 = 2GB
DIMM3 = empty
Pertinent BIOS Settings:
ext Clock =...
Yah, after going back and forth about it on the VMware thread, it all comes down to a matter of opinion and/or personal preference...
That sounds like a fun toy, I wish I worked at your company :D
Sorry for the delay...
Thanks for all the advice everyone :D , I now fully understand why less cores is (usually) better then more because of current Virtualization Software issues w/ not being able to sync the cores efficently.
But I am still a bit confused on the RAM front :confused:
I...
I went to the Boston one too, I was in the IT Pro Track, I especially enjoyed the info in session #2 (Virtualization and Your Infrastructure), especially about Hyper-V and Terminal Services RemoteApp...
I've got a question about the 1yr trial of Server 2008;
If I install this on a VM, can I go...
First off, Welcome :D
This thread is for Quads and Duals, the Q6600 is a Quad (4 core processor), your in the right place.
If you haven't already ordered your Q6600 and you have a Microcenter nearby I believe they are selling these suckers for $200 a pop (here is the thread for $200 Q6600 @...
WOW PTNL, you didn't have to do all that.... But THANK YOU very Much :D
God I love the [H]Community :D
Well I guess that solves that ;)
Wouldn't it be better and more cost efficient to use a client that boots the VM directly from network, instead of booting into XP and the RDP'ing to the VM...
First off Thank you both for the very informative posts...
As Seen In Sig:
I am running a Q6600 w/ 4gb of Ram and the HD that stores the VM's is my WD Raptor 150GB...

I am running 2 VM's both WinXP 32-bit, allotting 2 cores to 1 and 1 core to the other, both have 1.5GB of ram alloted also...
I just recently built a new Q6600 rig (see sig) and I am running Ubuntu 7.10 64-bit and VMware v6.0.2 build-59824 on it. I run 2 separate WinXP 32-bit VM's on this machine (one for work & one for play ;))...

I am trying to get a feel for the consensus here on weather or not to disable the throttling features... some say leave 'em on, some say turn 'em off
The people who say leave 'em on, also say they don't hurt preformance, but others believe they do and think they should be turned off...
So who's...
IIRC orthos doesn't work for quad cores because it doesn't stress all 4 cores, but prime95 does...
Running prime it stays pinned @ 3330Mhz, but in Ubuntu 64-bit OS there isn't a similar app I can use to stress all 4 cores like Prime95 does in WinBlowz. So I can't test :(
I won't be...
Someone over at the Abit Forums recommended I try Folding@Home to stress the cores and see if it bounces back and forth between 2.22ghz and 3.33ghz;
Yup, it still does :(
I am getting mixed reviews... should I turn the throttling features of my Q6600 off, or leave them on?
So this is not the case, even thou the core clock bounces between 2220mhz and 3330mhz under LOAD?
I haven't had any stability issues, I am more concerned w/ the systems preformace, especially since it's bouncing between 2220mhz and 3330mhz under LOAD
48°c at load is about as high as I've seen it get, and thats running Prime95 stressing all 4 cores in WinXP for hours on end (you gotta love the Thermalright UItra-120 Extreme :D)
If your interested: Here is a full spreadsheet of voltages and temps at different FSB settings, right now I am...
That's exactly my concern...
I would rather the CPU stick to it's OC of 3330mhz during LOAD (to get peak preformance) and drop when Idleing (to save power), but for some odd reason my Chip is bouncing back and forth from 2220mhz and 3330mhz even when under LOAD :confused:
My Abit IP35-Pro comes with two CPU throttling functions:
C1E (Enhanced Halt State)
EIST (Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology)
I believe my Q6600 supports both of these functions, but I could be wrong...
My question is, is it wise to turn off these functions when you are overclocking...
I lapped the HS, not the IHS (processor) thou. My ambient temps hover between 64-68F here in New England. ;)
I think I just got lucky with my Q6600 proc, but unlucky with my E8400.
ballistic,
I too had to use 1.4v to hit 3.6ghz, actually the exact voltage was 1.4350v. Nope no fan being used, I just did the bolt mod, althou others have added 30mm or 40mm fans to the PWM and NB Heatsinks, but I didn't want to... I also stepped back to 3.3ghz as I mentioned because the PWM...
CoreTemp and CPUID HW Monitor are both showing: 57/61
Speedfan 4.34 beta 38 is showing: 53/57
so which is it?
I'd be much more comfortable with Speedfan's temps, my goal is to overclock the E8400 to a place where it's load temps won't exceed 55c, and if Speedfan's temps are correct I can live...
Depends on the chip...
here are my temps @ 3.6ghz (400x9 1.435v)
Using Abit IP35-Pro Rev 1.1 BIOS v14 (BoltModded)
IDLE:
LOAD:
Check out my spreadsheet for BIOS settings, voltages, & temps
Abit IP35 PRO FTW :D
Thanks for the suggestion, I think I'll leave it as is for now (run it thru the HD cage) and go back and fix it up when it becomes an issue (when I fill all 4 HD cage slots) ;)
:p
What does yours say on it?
Mine was given to me by my local bank:D
I just hate the idea of massacring my P180...
Yup this is with the "Server Rig" (see sig), using Abit IP35-Pro Rev 1.1 BIOS 14, and I did bolt mod it too... I don't know how much of a difference this made because I didn't preform before/after tests.
Your welcome for the spreadsheet, and good luck :)
