naw, it's not the VA panel, it's a weird sort of shimmering on the surface of the panel or AG coating. Sort of like the machine that prints the material isn't perfectly smooth and makes the surface slightly non-uniform. Both of the X800Ds I've had have it. I've sort of just gotten used to it...
Definitely true for the KU6290/6300. The Sony X800D is pretty good in that regard. It's good enough that it's not bothering me while the KU6290 very much did. The only real issue with the X800D is off-axis color shift. It's pretty noticeable if you are sitting close. I imagine the 49" IPS...
I ended up buying the X800D and previously have owned the KU6300, but not the KS8500. The KU6300 definitely has poor pixel response time (ie black smear) compared to the X800D. The X800D on the other hand I think may actually have slightly worse viewing angles. At 2ft I can definitely see...
FWIW, I'd suggest going and looking at one in best buy if you can. It's a fine monitor, but personally after seeing a 27" 4K in person, I decided I really wanted 32"+. Before that this was also a contender for me. I ended up buying a x800d which is great except for the typical VA color shift.
Looks like I can do gamut adjustments in 4:4:4 "game" mode, but auto appears to be choosing rec709 which appears to be right. I'll try to verify that is what the amdgpu drivers are doing. I've dropped contrast down to 45 from 50 and skin tones are looking less over-saturated. The place I'm...
Hi Guys,
So my initial attempts at using 4K TVs as a computer monitor have not been great. My first was a $289 Samsung un40KU6290 from the Black Friday sale at costco. That display had a really nice picture with great contrast. The biggest downside was the poor pixel response times leaving...
In PC mode you'll get 4:4:4 chroma which will make text (especially red and blue) look far better, but you will indeed have higher input lag than game mode. Having said that, I kept mine in PC mode all the time since it was still low enough to not really bother me. Even in PC mode it's pretty...
I owned a 6290 for a couple of months. Unfortunately mine broke and costco no longer carried it so couldn't give me an exchange. It's a pretty good value to be sure. I suspect they use a couple of different panels in it since there may be a bit of a lottery involved.
FWIW the 6290/6300 has low input lag in game mode (and decent enough outside of game mode) but also high GTG response time so you'll see some smearing. No freesync either, but otherwise it's big and beautiful.
The LG 27UD68 appears to be a decent monitor with good reviews but it's pretty...
It's certain got the resolution, but the brightness isn't high enough for HDR at 400 cd/m2. Frankly the LG 32UD99 might actually look better since 4K @ 32" is still going to be extremely sharp and it claims to have a peak brightness of 550 cd/m2 (though 350cd/m2 typical).
That's my take too. I'm not too concerned about ~30ms input lag (though obviously ~10-20s would be nice). It's the pixel response time that gets me. I just wish the X900E came in a 43" version. The X800D could be an option if it would ever go on sale.
The slow pixel response time was actually the biggest problem I had with the KU6290. Hearing that it's also a problem on the KS8500 is very helpful since I was considering one of these. Thank you!
I think it will be the LG 32UD99 for me. 49" is too big for me anyway. :D
Well the adventure is over for me. Tonight I packed the Avera up and dropped it off at UPS to go back. I didn't really get any further with it. Between the dim backlight, the NR and VIP resetting every reboot I got pretty tired of bothering fiddling with the other settings. I think I got it...
The LG OLED and Samsung KS8000s appear to be great from all the reports (better contrast and brightness being the biggest benefits), but you'll need to go up to at least 49" and shell out $1-2K depending on the model. Ignoring the cost, the size is probably the biggest problem for me...
The X800D appears to be a contender. The 43" version is VA, with the associated tradeoffs. Very anecdotally people seem to report it has better GTG than the low end Samsungs, but it's over twice the price at ~$650.
A couple of us just got done testing out the Avera 40" TVs. They are dirt...
I just went through and rotated my screen back and forth a bunch of times (losing some of my service menu settings each time). At times in both portrait and landscape mode it felt like it was "better" (not really true 4:4:4 though), and other times it was more like straight 4:2:2. I couldn't...
jmandawg:
I see the same thing with the test image, but I think I might be only doing 4:2:2 right now. I dumped the EDID info under linux and saw:
"Supported color formats: RGB 4:4:4, YCrCb 4:2:2"
Not sure if it matters but this is on HDMI 4. Can you check to make sure you are doing 4:4:4...
Yeah, I do have that set, I imagine this is more related to the drivers I'm using under Linux. I'll see if switching to amdgpu-pro helps.
So in other news I'm finding that I can't permanantly disable noise-reduction and VIP. Every time I swtich inputs or turn the TV off/on it resets. If I...
jmandawg:
Just got mine this morning. I've been having trouble getting it to do 60Hz 4K, but that might not be the TV's fault (this is linux using the open source radeon drivers on a RX480).
Impressions so far: This thing is dim. On max (backlight) brightness it's about the same as the 3...
Before mine broke it worked decently as a coding monitor. The biggest issue was probably that I felt kind of fatigued after several hours of use. I'm not sure if that was due to the raw size or PWM. The black smear and motion blur was definitely noticeable, but more as an annoyance than...
Any opinoin on GTG response and/or black smearing during motion? I definitely noticed that on my 6290 before it broke. Too bad about the bezel. They use a picture of the 65" version in the description of the 40" version making it look much thinner than it really is. Still, for under $190...
Hi Guys,
Possibly against my better judgment I just ordered an Avera 40EQX10 40" 4K TV to replace my defunct Samsung 40KU6290. Fry's is having a sale right now where you can get it for $199.99 in store, but I was able to use google express with 15% off first order coupon for a total price of...
Aha, from amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Whats-difference-between-this-un55ku6290/forum/Fx1OC50MBGQAFGA/Tx29MON9YBDB6NJ/1?_encoding=UTF8&asin=B01DUTOI5U
So at the very least the processor is different. I think that raises the possibility that the 6290 employs lower quality electronics in...
I'm curious if it has to do with yours being the 6300. Perhaps there are internal differences beyond the bluetooth that are not immediately apparent. It might explain why the 6290s were sold off so cheaply during the black friday fire sales.
I hope I made it clear that it's a mixed bag. I figured it was better to address it (at least briefly) here than leave it un-discussed.
I owned one of these displays. I absolutely would not say the build quality is excellent. It's probably better than the Korean imports, but it's certainly...
For that size/price you are either looking at one of the Korean models or a 4K TV. Generally the best bang/buck screen in 2016 was the 40" samsung UN40KU6300 or UN40KU6290. For a while you could get them for ~$290 through costco/etc. I had one for 2 months before it died. Colors were great...
The way I look at it: This was an entry level TV that Samsung quickly discontinued and liquidated for 2017. Whatever profit they made from it is done (except for the ads you can't disable). There's not much incentive for them to spend additional resources on it.
Doubt it. This was quite unlike the kind of glitching seen during firmware updates. Firmware update screen glitching has typically been fairly minor and intermittent. This was totally unsauble. Also typically the firmware updates happen relatively quickly and prompt when they complete, while...
Well guys, the party is over for me. My Black Friday KU6290 started glitching really badly today over all 3 HDMI inputs. I tried two separate cables on both my laptop and desktop with the same result. I tried messing around in the settings a bit but without any improvement. Interestingly the...
If it were me and it were work buying it, I'd go for the 40". You'll be able to fit more terminals with more code on the screen and still have a high enough DPI that fonts should look sharp. The 970 is still a pretty nice card and you should be set for light 4k gaming or heavier 1080p gaming...
buysquad has the samsung UN55JU6700 on sale for $979.99:

You joke, but with that setup he still has the ability to work on 1 code window and 2 spreadsheets when things get boring without rerranging anything. That's progress!
Sorry guys, vizio confirmed that the M43 does not support 4:4:4. See the comments on this facebook post:

Looks like a number of the models are now shipping from vizio:

Anyone want to be the guinea pig for the 43" model? :D
The amazon reviews of the crossover concern me a bit. I don't necessarily care about refresh rates over 60hz, but in the comments:
"I wouldn't recommend it for image or video editing. The pixels are not exactly square, so the image is slightly stretched horizontally. Colors are good and there...
Hah! I had no idea "Wasabi Mango" was a real company. :D
Here's a review for the UHD420:
