I was not aware that the vnx platform was infinitively scalable without having to add disks.
Oh wait, with the vnx you must add disks and swap controllers as you grow..
Compellent is much more efficient at tiering and can also do raid at a block level instead of disks
I would pick Dell + Compellent every single time against UCS + VNX
Superior compute platform, and superior storage platform
ucs had too many firmware issue in the past.. and VNX is still behind Compellent
Pretty sure pricing will be close to equal between both as well.
we compared all scenarios
raid-10 fat , raid-5 fat, raid-10 thin and raid-5 thin
of course..Compellent is using all his drives..so a write coming in will use 100+ spindles..even for a small 100gb lun.
with EMC, it would write on only 8 or 16 drives max.
you can try to simulate the...
We currently have 4 EMC CX4, and we decided to start purchasing Compellent since last summer. I currently have 1k+ spindles on Compellent.
Compellent is so much better, it's not even fair.
Their reporting is miles away from Navisphere analyzer.. and their Co-pilot support is the best...
We have some CX4 and CX3.
We looked at the VNX for like 3 seconds...no real tiering..no thin provisionning...out
Really happy with Compellent so far.
racking is completed...pics soon..
well..your messing with their cold aisle..that`s why.
some colo location are really picky about this. In our DR site, we can't even install a switch backward if it doesn`t have reversed airflow. So I'm using some APC organizer with a pass-through.
typical of tier-3 and tier-4 DC.
wait what ? you've never worked on one ?
so your opinion is based on EMC training and salesrep ?
I manage 4 fully loaded CX4 in prod right now.. so I think I know how to work with them.
what I did is point out some flaw in the VNX lineup. I never said EMC was crap..actually..their VMAX is...
Just sharing some fact that me not be known by everyone currently San shopping..Far from useless...it's not like you can switch San vendor easily.
I don't hate Emc...in fact, their vnxe serie is really good...and could be the best offering at this price point.
don't get me started on EMC...their offering with the VNX is so far behind other vendor it's not even funny anymore. By adding disks to a storage pool..you must at least double up the original number..otherwise you will create the biggest hotspot you're ever seen.. and even if you do it...
Hope your not planning on doing any kind of thin provisionning with those..otherwise you'll want to kill yourself very quickly.
I'm currently kicking my EMC out of the door because of poor performance.
Compellent is the new king
that's what I'm saying.
I'm using my 8gb fiber..and already 5Gb of my 10Gbe link.
I'm not against it at all. I'm just saying is it not for everyone just yet. Once the bandwith goes up...I'll be all over it. Believe me..it would be so easy to have only 2 cables per server !!
call me old fashioned..but I still prefer them separate.
Unified Fabric is not gonna do any miracle if your already maxing your links.
when it's on 40gbe ethernet..it's gonna be a different story.
Server core with Hyper-V role make simply no sense at all.
you need to pay for the license..and if you're using the standard edition..then you're limited on RAM and you can't do any clustering
Hyper-V Server R2 FTW !
