LCD monitors have no flicker. If it's an old CRT, then it probably has a low refresh rate which means more noticable flicker. I'd try to arrange to try out an LCD for a while to see if it is worth it to you. (My personal opinion is that LCDs are noticably superior in that way. Only LCD...
my CRTs do that when the refresh rate is set too high. I suppose that would only be applicable to my old, crappy, $5 CRTs though?
Did you check dell's website?
Look through your motherboard specs to see if it is mentioned, or look on the motherboard for the ports. The sata ports look like this.
They're much smaller and nicer looking than the IDE ribbon cables, which is the only reason I can think of for someone to get a sata DVD burner at this...
Looks like just almost everything you have there would be an improvement over some things I'm running. :p PMed.
just something that'll fold. ( must raise stats! 0_o )
joined the [H]oarde last month...
lol, I was going to do the same thing. I want to mod my regular case, but I can't live without my pc! :D so how did you mount the motherboard?
...what if the screws rip out of the cardboard? Like, while you're away?
and no duct tape?
heh, she can use a computer effectively? (my grandma can't find the backspace key)
I'd say get the cheapest pc possible. Dell has a $300 entry point. That would be fine for typing and internet. Any more you spend I say put towards your own interests, whatever they are.
I would get a...
I have an Apple II and the origional Macintosh Plus. They work, but it is hard to find the floppys. The Mac is 17 years old. (Old as me.)
I was addicted to the Apple II games in kindergarden... They're still pretty fun.
does this qualify?
My cousin had an Apple II clone (a Laser III, I think) that he could overclock from 1mhz to 3mhz, at which it started getting hot. It was an easy built-in function though. He got it out and showed it to me once. There was a program that was really awesome back then: it...
thanks for that info, quite useful. I still want a chipset block because the fan is loud-ass when it is turned up. Guess I need decent airflow through the case, eh? ;)
The only thing AC or Koolance would be the chipset block, because nothing else will fit.
I'm doing Cisco Networking III right now. (I'll be a fresh CCNA in june 06...) I feel kinda guilty letting myself be brainwashed by their classes, which make it sound as if there isn't anything but cisco. :) Glad to see there's some good competition. I think that, if anything, the trouble of...
I think 2x to 3x for gb over 100mb is pretty realistic. I read somewhere that a guy got 400mb/s on his pc with gb, which would be more like 4x or a little more. It all depends on what you'll be using it for. For most purposes 100mb/s is plenty.
I think $110 is too much to pay for an 8-port...
Oh, thanks. I had some ideas to make it somewhat less work and less noisy, but you're right about them being big and ugly. (hmm, I wonder if that can be changed... ;) )
I appriciate the review, TN. :)
I was looking for a chipset block that would work. Looks like it is pretty restrictive though. What size of barbs are those, 1/8"? And how thin is that channel in the plexi for the water? Looks tiny... I had been looking at this chipset block, but it...
I like the mirror window and the ram cooler. :) I think I'll make a ram cooler like that, tho I fear mine will look ghetto. A little more glowy neon than I like, but looks great! (no drooling smilie? I'd have used it. It almost makes me hungry.)
I got the same mobo and some uv, but...
lol, too true. I wonder what makes them so suspicious.
another minor incident - trying to teach my grandma how to use a computer is a real headache. She can't even use the mouse or keyboard very well. Once I told her over the phone about how you can delete letters with the backspace key on...
Some pics would help. :) Seems like it should be something simple, but...
So, the back panel is hard to get off, and impossible to get on? What do you mean by a gash? sounds nasty... :(
My grandma's emachine sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I think it needs blowholes first, then get rid of the stickers and paint it. Acutally, just buy a new case and mod that. An emachine isn't worth it, imo. :)
...Do they really use refurbished parts? That sucks...
lol...
I was getting mad at an Emachine case about a week ago, but I figured it out (eventually). And it was a sucky case. Other than that, the first time I did anything hardware-related was putting in a CD-ROM drive with my dad (who was over 50...) who decided to use a dremel to make the...
