    budget build

gotcha, i didn't know that. oh well, i guess i'll put it on the tab. if i buy it all in store, it's 526.51, tax included, and i can collect it all tomorrow. well outside of my budget, but given that i hadn't thought about the OS, that's pretty much dead on target. neato! there's a couple...

    budget build

turns out i lied about the power source - it's an Antec Smart Power 450W. came with the case. can i just skip the PSU then? it's probably like 6-7 years old now but it hasn't had that much use.

    budget build

i'd prefer an amd too, were it not for the linux support question. i've spent too much time pissing about with drivers that aren't well-supported out of the box even in ubuntu...if it ain't plug and play, i don't want to deal with it. when it is plug and play, everything works with nary a...

    budget build

thanks dude! appreciate it, i will probably go with this. i think you are right about the ram. it's not that much extra $ either. do you have a recommendation for a similarly-priced and comparably-powerful nvidia card? also, is 430W enough for this build?

    budget build

yes, in westmont IL. ~10 miles drive, 28mpg. nbd. i did forget the wifi card, yes. $150 is for ram, psu, and hdd. video card i specified $100-125 separately, which may take me slightly out of budget. i think i'll have to pay tax for online purchases as well (IL), but you're right that i...

    budget build

yeah, retail xp home. can i use that key and an upgrade? will it be cheaper? the case is an antec sonata ii for sure. having started to paw through components here, i realize that my budget is pretty tight, and most of the components i'm seeing recommended for cheaper gaming builds are in...

    1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc video game playing and probably some document composition. i would like to be able to play video games, but i don't need settings turned up all the way. as long as it can handle the next 3-4 years' worth of games in...

Galaxy nexus camera by comparison to N95

I am enjoying the One S so far. The camera is quite good. I haven't done a side-by-side comparison but I'm sure it's as least as good as that on the N95. If it weren't, the ease of use and the fantastic variety of options would more than make up for it. Another issue I had with the Nexus...

Galaxy nexus camera by comparison to N95

Hi all, Thanks for the advice. Given that you've all suggested they may be more or less on par, I opted instead for the HTC One S, which it seems is generally considered superior to the Nexus. Hopefully this means it will be an improvement on the N95. Much as I enjoyed the Nokia, it's...

Galaxy nexus camera by comparison to N95

I've got a Nokia N95 8GB that I'm pretty fond of, but it's really time to upgrade. I use the camera judiciously. I keep hearing tales of mediocrity regarding the Galaxy Nexus' camera; how would it compare to the N95? If it's a significant improvement - even if not up to snuff with, say, the...

    Time for a new backpack!

I use a plain Jansport (http://www.amazon.com/Jansport-STUDENT-BACKPACK-STYLE-TDN7-4ut/dp/B005H7CZTU/ref=pd_sbs_sg_14), and a laptop sleeve if I'm carrying a computer. I've been using mine for well over a decade and it has not so much as broken a single stitch. I have a Timbuk2 that I got from...

Stolen Laptop? or just a great deal?

I don't think the OP's question is whether he is liable for owning a stolen laptop. He has a moral dilemma on his hands. OP: It seems sketchy as hell. I think you're not comfortable with the computer, and that's admirable - plenty of people would just call it someone else's problem. Report it...

bike-commuting student in need of lightweight laptop or netbook

I have a five-year-old tablet with 1.6GHz C2D processor and 2GB of RAM, and it does everything I ask it to except play video games. And it weighs 4lb. When I try to carry my 15" bruiser places, I hate myself. It rarely moves from my desk.

    Looking to purchase a laptop

It sounds like your primary use will be for web development, which is not a super-demanding task - you could do it on a netbook, though it might not be fun. There are a ton of ~14" laptops that will do your development work without breaking a sweat for $400; it's a question of how many hundreds...

    Best sub $1000 15" notebook?

Thinkpad T520. Can have with 1080p, keyboard isn't backlit but it's "front-lit" with a little LED shining down from the screen bezel, can be had under $1000 with aforementioned. You specifically mentioned Lenovo as having some ugly computers, though. I don't know if you meant the Thinkpads...

    13"ish laptop shopping...

thirding the X220 if you're concerned about things feeling cheap, i think there's not much choice here i tend to pass up specs for build quality / parts availability and thinkpads have never let me down..ever. they are solid machines, well worth the premium

    Best brand for laptops

I've had two Thinkpads, one IBM and one Lenovo, and the quality went up for me. The IBM is still solid as a rock - it was strapped to a race car's firewall (running on a flash drive), fell off the frame and into the car where it was beaten by the pedals, and still works perfectly.

    Thoughts on Smartphone Keyboards

I need me some buttons. My priorities are not like those of most consumers, apparently; I just picked up a Nokia E73 on eBay. Haven't got it yet but I used to have an iPhone and I really prefer buttons to pixels and apps. Having played extensively with E71s in the past, I was hesitant to switch...

Canceling data after a month on T-Mobile

Hey y'all, I need a new phone to replace mine eventually (a Nokia N95 8GB, which I dig but it's hella creaky now). I have the $5.99 T-Zones plan grandfathered in on a T-Mobile family plan, and I don't want to lose it. But I would like one of them fancy Nokia E73s they're offering now, and if I...

    Kin is already dead.....

You can't market things like cell phones to kids. Kids want grown-up phones to do kid stuff with. If you sell a stunted kid-targeted phone at grown-up prices with grown-up data plans, nobody will buy it.

    Phone Advice - T-Mobile

The only ones I can think of are the Nokia N900, which can be had for ~$400 these days (It's pretty bitchin'), and Google's Nexus One, which is a li'l more (Also pretty bitchin').

DD: The Official "Post What You've Found" Thread (pics!!)

I found one too, circa '88 Macintosh SE. Also working, but no kb/mouse and I have no use for it. It's a nice decoration, though. I also have three Power Mac G3s and find a ton of potentially useful computers on the street in NYC. I usually open them up and see if there's anything worthwhile...

In the market for a tablet netbook

I know you want a netbook, but given that you say you'd "prefer" a netbook-sized device and your budget is a thousand, I assume you'd be open to some alternatives. The Thinkpad X6* tablets are awesome: great build quality, good screens, decent performance. Good battery life. They can be had with...

    Nokia E71

I've got an N95 8GB. The only thing I like about it is the camera, which I use often enough to justify the rest. I drool for the E71, though, and I might murder for an E71 with an N95 camera.

    Gizmos and Gadgets!

Props for the Zen Touch. I had one of those back in the day and I much preferred it to the iPod for the sound quality, physical buttons (the contemporary iPod had touch buttons only), and the fact that it cost $200 fo a 20gb Touch vs $300 for a 15gb iPod.

    Is this true?

I have an X61 Tablet. It's better built than another old Thinkpad I have. I've heard others disagree with that. Go play with one at a store. I know Micro Center carries them, but if you haven't got one nearby you will have to hunt a bit--they're pretty uncommon in brick-and-mortar shops...

Touch Screen Keypads vs. Physical Qwerty Keyboards

Having gone from iPhone to N95, I prefer T9 to the iPhone touch screen. Which isn't to say that the touch keyboard is necessarily bad, but once you get good with T9, you get good with T9, and it's less error-prone.

    The best netbook?

Hence why it's really only suitable if you don't need a lot of power. Admittedly this is also an opinion tailored to my needs. I have a powerful-enough laptop that I can use if I ever need to do any real work, and I don't have a lot of money to spend (any, actually, which is why I'm not...

posting from my new e71 :D

As an N95-8GB user, I can never decide if I should have bought an E71 instead. I really like the 5MP camera on the N95 and I use it pretty regularly, which also makes me think I should have bought an N82 instead. Every time I debate this in my head, I come to the conclusion that I made the...

Got the old iPhone for free, Should I Activate it?

I did this for a while, using T-Mobile and a 16GB EDGE iPhone. Eventually I caved and bought a data plan. iPhone or no, it is very useful. I sold the iPhone this October for $300 and a Motorola V3xx which sold for a further $75ish. But nobody is forcing you to buy a data plan if they don't...

    Best Tablet PC?

This is what I have and I am phenomenally happy with it. Also bear in mind the earlier warning about tablets. I love the tablet features on my X61 but they are of little practical value. I use them fairly often, but only for drawing (doodling, really). In the X61's case, the only way to get...

Best laptop(s) for college right now

If it's for college, you're probably not too worried about resale value, I'd guess. I know people with XPS laptops that are built just fine. I almost bought a 1330 myself. Having said that, now that I've seen and played with the new Macbooks, I'd go for one of those. They feel solid and...

    netbook ssd drives...ntfs or fat32

Concerns about the lifespan of flash memory are pretty much not a problem with these new notebook/netbook SSDs. If you're trying to run a computer off a flash drive or SD or CF card, then you'd want FAT32. But these netbooks come with SSDs designed to take the strain of it, and would last years...

    The best netbook?

IMO if you don't need a lot of power (and in a netbook, you probably shouldn't, or you might as well just look for a laptop), the HP 2133 (which is to be replaced by the 2140) is friggin' nice: the best-looking netbook by far, feels pretty good in the hand, and the best netbook screen. Add to...

    D-Link DIR-615 IEEE 802.11n Wireless Router $36 shipped

I just dropped $40 on a WRT54G2. I was considering a newer N router but it was a no-name brand and I only have one N device anyway. After going through four routers and my sister's WRT54G working perfectly for years, I'm just going to stick with a known reliable router. Speed and...
