Need help choosing a 49" Ultrawide (3 choices)

FWIW, I picked up the CRG9 about a week ago after contemplating the others you were and REALLY like it. Coming from triple 16x9 and never owned an ultrawide before. I really like it and can't find myself going multiple monitors again. Regarding the curvature - when I opened it up, I thought...

    Samsung C49RG90 32:9 5120x1440 monitor

So probably a stupid question, but would the igpu in an I7-6600U drive this monitor? The max resolution for that igpu is 4096x2304 but wasn't sure if it would work with the 5120x1440 aspect. Looking to use this for productivity with a work laptop and with a dedicated gaming rig. Hoping my...

Anyone know why Ceton tuners are not available anywhere?

I'd say they've been done for a while - they were being sued by Gibson over a year ago; not sure what came out of that.

looking for a good router (no-wifi) to replace Verizon box

Thanks for the info guys - I'm comfortable with CLI (from my CCNA days, albeit a bit rusty) so the ER looks pretty good. My topology will be ERPRO8->HP2530 POE 48port switch-> 2 Ubiquity AP-AC PROs for wireless.

diizzy - I'm also curious on what you mean by iffy about EdgeOS? I'm in the market for a ER-PRO8 but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

HP 24 port POE which model?

I have the v1 of that switch and love it. I've been doing a lot of research on this recently. There was some discussion on this - you can checkout this thread: http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1882300 If you're looking for POE(+), consider that there will be fans in this switch which...

    48 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations?

Dell X1052 spec sheet shows 56.7dB (max) acoustic noise which I assume is the boot up scream. I really wish I could hear these things in person - the HP2920 @62dB (which I also assume is boot up) is the loudest in its price range. I may end up going with the HP2530 which comes in at...

    48 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations?

Thanks ReelMcCoy - I'm teetering back and forth if this will be too noisy; looking at the specs, the power supply comes in at 62db which seems loud on paper (48port POE model). As mentioned, being in my rack inside an isolated closet may make it a non-issue but tough to tell if this will be...

    48 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations?

ReelMcCoy - In regards to noise - how loud would you consider it? I think startup has them at full blast momentarily, but what about general operation? My rack is in a dedicated closet in my home and wanted to check how bad the noise was. Also - check your PM.

    48 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations?

I'm looking at the HP2920 48port POE+ switch (J9729A) and it states: Max power rating - 487W (total capable) Idle - 46W (no ports connected) POE power - 370W (deliverable) Compare that to the same 2920, 48 port non-POE+ switch (J9728A): Max power rating - 70W Idle - 27W The HP 2530...

    48 Port Gigabit Switch Recommendations?

I'm highly considering the HP2920 as well (POE variant, J9729A) - would be curious if you end up going that route. Similar boat as you - looking for 48port Gb switch for home that's reliable and fast. HP warranties are pretty awesome. I had a 1810G for a while which was their lower end but...

Third Party DVR to use with

If you don't want to pay subscription fees outside of the normal channel package and internet, your only real alternative is WMC w/a cablecard tuner like Ceton or SD. As mentioned you can record up to 6 streams at once. I do this at home, for my parents and my sisters family - if done right...

    Surface Pro 3 (5/20/14)

Makes sense and I agree. I really hoped SP3 would be immediately available at the unveiling. It seems crazy that, for instance, someone wanting an I7 could literally have a new model available just 3 months after having it in hand - again, assuming they have a broadwell refresh 6months...

    Surface Pro 3 (5/20/14)

I may be misreading your intent on this post, but in terms of graphics performance - doesn't this outperform other mobile OS tablets already? Battery-wise seems pretty darn good when you take into consideration on the variables - which I think is what makes this challenging to compare to...

Why didn't anyone tell me it was this easy?

Yes, you have the right idea. Once you re-encode into SBS format, it's effectively like any other video, just playing side by side. You won't have any menus or related content - just the movie itself and manually enabling 3D mode on your TV is certainly reasonable. I don't know how much (if...

Why didn't anyone tell me it was this easy?

3D is a can of worms IMO. If you want to playback framepacked 3D, you need official Blu-ray playback software like Total Media Theater (there's one or two others as well). You can rip the 3D MVC track with tools like MakeMKV, but nothing can play it back that I'm aware of. You can re-encode...

HTPC, or Home Server..? Both? I'm Confused...

He has a Synology NAS that can natively run a Plex server - from the sound of the post, I don't believe he's interested in transcoding. How well do Chromecasts handle streaming full bit rate blu rays over Wifi? If its running through Plex, I assume the Chromecast will bitstream HD audio...

PC Restarts when shut down via IR Remote

To OP - Have you tried using the WMC Tasks menu to shutdown the PC vs. using the Power button on the remote? If it works w/out using the power button, when we know it's more likely due to the IR code being used. If same results persist, then it could be what Renapd said.

HTPC, or Home Server..? Both? I'm Confused...

LOL - you sound exactly like my best friend, almost to the letter. Haha. :) Yes, it's way, way complicated. Agreed with malacoda. A dedicated pc is the *best* route - I use Shark007 codecs and also use DirectVobSub (it's included) - no issues with forced subtitles, etc. Works wonderful -...

HTPC, or Home Server..? Both? I'm Confused...

I probably should have clarified - FORCED subtitles are important to me; i.e. any movie that doesn't have burned in English subtitles in the movie. This is pretty common these days - Thor2, Man of Steel, The Avengers, Captain Philips, The Wolverine (to name just a few) would be recent examples...

HTPC, or Home Server..? Both? I'm Confused...

I am in a similar situation - some SmartTV's and other not. I have a Synology NAS I play by Blu-ray rips on. I have Video Station and the native DLNA client running. With Samsung SmartTV's, the issue I ran into is with TrueHD audio - natively, it won't play unless I remux and remove TrueHD...

Lav Audio icon not appearing in system tray for Media Center playback (x64 win 7)..

Hmm, that is very weird. Since shark himself replied, I assume he had go through and ensure both the x32 and x64 components were installed..? (Side note - I wish he'd just make it a single installer already and simply detect what's needed, lol). Just checking the obvious, but could it be...

Lav Audio icon not appearing in system tray for Media Center playback (x64 win 7)..

If I'm understanding you correctly, LAV isn't decoding your videos when playing from Media Center. If that's correct, you probably don't have LAV configured for the x64 bit player. This explains why you see it in WMP (as x32 is the default) and WMC uses the x64 WMP as default. I'm...

Thinking of going to 7.1 from 5.1...worth it?

I have a 7.1 setup in my media room and my take is that I wouldn't go *back* to 5.1 if I didn't have to; however the addition of the extra channels isn't necessarily mindblowing as it would be going from a 2.1 (or 3.1) setup to 5.1. It definately adds to the immersion experience, assuming...

    Another "recommend a tablet" thread

I'm bias but I would recommend the SP2. Its so fast to do anything and I really love the ability to jump in and out of the metro ui and desktop, easily. Very simple to multitask and the swiping gestures "feel" great. The ability to do everything is extremely gratifying.... I could see some...

    Another "recommend a tablet" thread

Just curious, what did you find bad about Win8 on a tablet? Outside of the bad press of Win8, I find it extremely intuitive on my SP2. I "get it" now and think it's very, very slick. Been using iPads for a while and outside of getting over some old navigation habits with the iPad, I find...

    Surface Pro Noise level

The fans on my SP2 are not loud IMO. When I'm running a desktop driven game, they will kick in and I can barely hear them in a silent room from about ~1.5ft away (ear<->hand) distance. The fan is generally silent, however, when doing basic browsing, etc. Any ambient noise drowns it out...

Quick question about Blu Ray 3D

This won't help your question but I was curious - how did you rip to MKV your Jurrasic Park 3D disc? When I've tried ripping 3D discs (via MakeMKV), I can rip both the MVC and AVC tracks but there wasn't a player to play as framepacked (maybe that's not trued anymore) which IMO kind of made...

Quick question about Blu Ray 3D

What playback software are you using? As far as I understand, if it's not TMT or any other official bluray playback software that supports frame-packed 3D content, it'll play one "eye" when using 3d bluray discs. If you are, I believe you'll have to maually enable 3D mode on your TV.

Best (FREE) Software To Rip DVD to WMV

This. If we're talking about actual DVD's and NOT blurays, they will playback fine on all media center extenders, with the exception of the DMA2100 (no audio, but video does play). Install Shark007, use makemkv to grab video (lossless) and then you can host the movie in the Movies section of...

    Connecting cable box to PC

I'd recommend a Ceton InfiniTV6 PCIe tuner, personally. Silicon Dust makes decent CC tuners too. As mentioned, you won't get on demand - I believe you CAN get pay-per view, but you have to request it over phone.

    Home Network Issues

Have you tried removing the static IP's and see if that makes a difference? And are your static IP's assigned on the device ends or are you using a DHCP client reservation list? Is it possible your gateway is getting rebooted for some reason? Not much help here, but just thinking out loud...

Interesting... I have the bluetooth "diNovo Mini." I wonder if I should try the "Mini Controller" which looks basically identical but uses the unifing adapter instead. FWIW - Logitech has a 3 year warranty of these keyboards which is nice. I may see if I can do another return to logitech...

I have the same keyboard and have come to really, really dislike it - though I'm using it with Win7, I had/have the same issues. Often times I have to remove/reinstall the battery for it to start tracking well again. I've even had Logitech replace it (for free) and had the same issues...

    InfiniTV 6 - Thought?

    1. On Demand will not function with CC devices. TIVO recently was granted this ability to work with On Demand, but previously had the same limitations other CC devices have. I'm not sure if this is for all regions, or just a subset? Some TIVO folks could clarify. 2. If your cable co...

    InfiniTV 6 - Thought?

Isn't the HDHRx6 simply two HDHR Primes in one unit? Meaning you need two cablecards, two power supplies, two TA's, etc? Is it still made? Quick question on tuner pooling - how does that work when all tuners are in use and one machine attempts to record? Does it miss the recording or is it...
