Umm...I guess I don't check in very often. But a LATE thanks guys! :D Guess I should get some GPUs going since I'm only up to 12 million today and dropped from the top 10 then to 32nd on the team today. Oh well, I just keep chugging along.
Welcome back Wolf! I'm digging back in the old memory banks, but wasn't Mrs. Wolf around back in the day too? (hope I'm not getting mixed up!) I don't check the forums much lately and my folding is without any GPUs so I'm not really able to hold my old position on the team...but I keep...
Well here I am thinking I can hold on to my top 10 position with a bunch of new C2D laptops...but it turns out they don't really like BOTH cores running 100%, so I'm stuck with a single 100% core and an unstoppable drop through the rankings. :( Keep up the good work, guys! :)
I forgot all about RC-5 64. I was ranked 1200 in that one and I didn't even participate for the last two years! Check out what I changed my name too when I switched to folding. I did my part for recruiting! http://stats.distributed.net/participant/psummary.php?project_id=5&id=135754
It's amazing to think back to the folding frenzy we had when this thing started. I've never seen as much excitement anywhere online as there was in this forum after Kyle posted the story about the Folding at Home project on the front page. We've had a lot of dominant folders and genomers come...
On passing me for 8th place on the team! I tried to put up a fight, but I've got about 20 C2D laptops running on only 1 core due to fan noise and heat issues...so the fight's over for now. I'm just trying to hold on to the top 10 on the team, but that's not looking like it will last long...
The cheapest way to do 20-30 machines would be with standard components and inexpensive cases - I wouldn't do any wall mounted stuff if you want to be taken seriously. That would work well as a cheap-as-possible solution, but in a work environment they'd blame your cobbled together setup if...
Well I haven't even been lurking lately either. I still fold like always, but I just don't have too much to say about it. It's good to see some of the original [H]orde still around though!
Hey Red, welcome back! We've been through a lot in the last few years, eh? Didn't you start out folding in the desert with a dust filled Dell? (I hope I'm remembering that correctly) I'm still here chugging along like I always have been. I've learned to stay out of the silly fighting and...
Wow, that's some crazy stuff right there.
This is the second time I can remember that police have been involved in a folding related incident. First we had the "drug dealing" folder and now a psycho balcony tosser. She should be in a lot of trouble for throwing those things down on what...
I have been running folding on every one of our computers at work since early 2001. I haven't had a single issue with it in the last 5 years - some of the early program versions had the occasional problem, but that's old news now. Our desktops, laptops and even our servers run it. The...
I would think that the best argument for allowing UD through again would be the fact that it's been running for 6 years and hasn't caused a problem yet. He's probably a little embarrassed that he forgot about it and hadn't noticed anything running on the computers or any of the traffic it...
Oh yeah, well I used to be a Canon guy and now I've got a D50. It's darktiger vs. Mattman all over again. :p
If I had the choice, I'd probably still pick the D50 over the new D80 since it's a little spendy and I just don't care that much...and the Canons feel kind of cheap to me.
I'm excited to see how this GPU folding goes. It may end up that dedicated folding machines have the cheapest processors and limited memory combined with higher-end video cards. This might mean that gamers can creep up on the big corporate farmers!
If we can hold them off until after our summer heat is over, it will be a first in the OCAU vs. [H] battle - at least since the teams ramped up to similar power levels. We've been doing the winter vs. summer battle for years, so if we can manage to stay ahead during their winter, we may be able...
Wow, for some of us GPU folding could really kill our relative folding output! Of all my folders, I have no fast GPUs. This could very well be the return of the home folder to a place of prominence until corporate PCs get more advanced video cards. Home folders could relatively easily add...
I think Amy's systems just faded to zero after she quit actively doing UD. I'm not sure if someone stopped them or if they just went away after the machines themselves were retired.
It's almost funny how this happens every damn year! Everyone needs to pour on as much as possible right now because it's only going to get worse. Once OCAU's school borgs start coming back online, we'll be toast in a hurry. Judging by our past summer declines, they'll have no problem beating...
I just ordered a D50 today with the 18-55. I'm anxious to see if it lives up to my expectations of D-SLR supremacy over point and shoot digicams. I missed the last 6 months of D-SLR reviews and didn't realize until a week ago or so that they had become this affordable. At these prices, how...
If there's an unanswered question that I've got the answer to, I'll post something, but I otherwise just pop my head in every day or two to see what's going on.
...and make sure your office borgs aren't running the -advmethods flag. I lost many a point due to machines sitting around waiting for work from the .149 server.
I'm sure that temps reduce CPU life, just like high core voltages - it's what the experts say. From my experience though, it won't matter to any of us. We'll have tossed that CPU in the trash years before it fails or sees any degredation in performance. I've been doing DC stuff since way back...
Normally, I say not to worry about temps, because most people get worried in the low 60s when I don't think they need to worry. But damn, 80 is hot! I doubt my old [email protected] ran that hot and that was the hottest processor I've ever used. AXPs (when I paid attention) were usually low...
If you just want to help the [H] in the UD points race, you don't even have to switch your fast machines over. Two of my highest scoring machines from when I did UD a few years ago were a PPro 200 and a Pentium 233 laptop - they hung in there with machines 10x as fast! Of course the slow...
Good work Tengis! Just know that once you get these installed, you won't really have to do anything to keep them running. Your initial efforts to get everything done right will pay off in the long run.
If you're on more of a budget, I can recommend the Biostar TForce 6100/A64 3200+ combo. Without any tweaking to speak of I run 2.45 GHz (with cheap memory) and it has OK video included. It's cheap, stable and has a lot of tweaking options if you want them. It's not AGP, but the build in video...
I have no idea what Ubuntu is, but it sounds like a remote country where Rhinos and Elephants still roam the plains.
What does your fahlog.txt say is going on?
Hehe, not for me...I just happened to check my stats twice within a few hours and I turned in an 11 point WU! WTF is that? I don't even see an 11 point WU listed in Stanford's list of currently running projects. Is there a way to get partial credit for a WU?
...but not total suckage - I've started seeing the first big ones finish, so I've got as many points just this morning as I had all day yesterday. Hopefully there will be a big dump, followed by more regular dumps instead of this giant WU constipation.
