Anyway, stuff I'm pondering for myself (took a look at the suggested stuff and it looks alright):
X2 4400+
7800gtx or 7900gt
2 gigs Corsair Value DDR2 533 (unless someone has a better suggestion)
120 gig raptor (only b/c it's relatively the same price as the 74gig due to the rebate)
Still...
Yeah, I'll need an optical drive, probably around $30. I'm not sure whether he'll need to burn any dvd's, but you never know. I think I saw an NEC one for $30ish.
Anyway, I think he's going to give me the money and I build him a machine.
If that changes, then this plan gets scrapped :P
Hey everyone, thanks for taking a look and helping me out in advance.
I must admit that I honestly haven't spent much time researching in the past few months and thus am turning to all of you to give me a hand and it is much appreciated.
Anyway, my dad needs a new box and his budget is...
First of all, bought it on thursday. Drove up to Salem, NH from Boston just for the ease of having it in my hands in one day and not paying sales tax.
Anyways, I bought the stock 2ghz model. For those who are lazy or may not know the specs off-hand, here they are:
2.0 Ghz Core Duo
1gb...
From the uses you described, it really sounds to me like you're trying to kill a fly with a sledgehammer. It might shed a little light on the situation if you could list the specs of the rig he was using before.
I think that unless your dad is planning to use some serious processing power...
I feel kinda silly laughing about that :p
But keeping on topic, I just finished my rig 2 weeks ago, I guess I could've saved another $30 or so on my 3500+
Not sure where this belongs so I posted it to General Hardware.
Anyone in the Dallas area know much about this Sidewalk sale and what I might expect there? I'll probably be checking out the one on August 6th. Was just curious if anyone had been there before and what kind of stuff I should...
I've been debating all weekend whether I wanted to order another one. Just ordered my first one friday night and the deal is so tempting I might get another!
That thread kind of reminds me of the guy that "watercooled his system" by pouring a gallon of water on top of the machine. :p
*And as a result of his joke, there were like 10,000 posts or something.
As the title suggests, Dell Small Business has a 35% off coupon for the 2405fpw (also works for the 2001fp and the 1905fp I believe)
The 2405fpw comes out to $780 before taxes and other bonuses such as FC, use the following code: 629P2JKBS7CWWD
Edit: I'd love to get one for myself but I'm...
I'm anxious for the EoQ stuff. Not to mention I hope there's a dollar amount off coupon for the 2005fpw since I'm sitting here with the 30% off 19 and 20 inch lcd monitors coupon from the dell hookup.
A year and a half ago, I had an issue with UPS as well, I shipped my tower to school and the box got smashed up along the way, resulting in a damaged case and damaged parts.
They cut me a check for brand new upgrades, no questions asked.
I'd agree with that. I'd really want to see what both companies have to offer me before I go and spend that kind of money. But I do get impatient with these kinds of things nor do I actually want to spend that kind of money on a card. *Goes and hugs his 9800 pro and X800XL*
Still haven't received my video card yet (darn EPP). But in terms of controlling your fan speeds, the Zalman can do that as well (the 7700cu comes with a controller and I already purchased a 4-fan controller for the case as well). But the main thing I worry about is if the fan fails on the...
Another suggestion for the case could be to replace the 2 80mm fans with vantec stealths or something of the like. And another heatsink (not widely available in the US, only from tigerdirect) is the Titan Vanessa L or S type.
The PC P&C Silencer is what I've got though I can't really say...
The PC-60bplus is not a bad case at all. However, it does have four case fans and if you're really adverse to the noise, you may want to grab a fan controller for them. But if you're looking for another lian-li, don't look too much into the non-plus pc-60s or pc-61 as the 120mm front intake...
I've been having a similar problem. My new X800XL hasn't come in the mail yet so I tried using an old Hercules 3dfx card in one of the regular PCI slots. The gpu fan would spin up on initial powerup and the board would start through POST. However, it would beep at me during the VGA test and...
I hear that every once in a while, the 2005fpw drops a little under 400. Happens maybe once every other month I guess.
BTW: those small business coupons are only redeemable once. Apparently unique coupons were sent via e-mail to people with small business accounts
You should be able to get at least an X800XL along with the 3000+ and the Asus A8n board I would think.
Edit:
CPU: 3000+ Nice budget processor, easily overclocked.
Motherboard: ASUS A8N is a pretty solid choice I'd think though I'd probably avoid the SLI just to save a few dollars

As the above posters mentioned, a lot of the problems with LCD's are slowly becoming things of the past. 2 years ago when I purchased my LCD I was a little worried about ghosting, etc (I ended up with the NEC/Mitsubishi 1760V for those who are concerned).
But yeah, switching to an LCD...
The RAM is TCC5 but I hear they're nearly identical in terms of overclocking (been reading some reviews on revision 2). As much as I like the raptor, I had been toying with the idea for quite some time but ultimately decided the reduced storage (OS + applications/software) wasn't worth the...
Hey guys, I'm a new member to the forums but I've been reading posts here for a while. I'm going to put together a new machine by the end of the summer and was curious what you guys thought of my build.
My budget is $1500 and the full intent of purchasing parts was to purchase the part that...
