Seconded. I tested it across ~100 yard lake in my back yard (LOS) and still received full signal on the other side with no issues. Definitely overkill for a home network.. but this is [H] afterall ;)

Nice - how much did you get it for? There was one at my local surplus store last week that some other guy snatched up in the 5 minutes from when the store opened until I got there... got it for $15. I was sad. :(

HP 2824 is good investment. I know you said you were looking for something only 12 port though... I picked one up a few months ago on ebay for $250 in good condition and can't say enough good things about it.

Definitely, which is why I was wary about placing it on the same 30 amp circuit with any other device. That's a lot of power.. I don't think it'd be wise for me to cheap out wiring arrangements.

I decided to just do things right and install a dedicated 30amp circuit for the UPS (and luckily my apartment property manager approved it!) I'm going to just have the receptacle installed right under the panel (about 5 ft away from my server rack). Still waiting for some electrician estimates...

I'm familiar with the techniques to get WOL running on a card that supports it - but the nic installed does not. It won't matter if I configure it to accept WOL commands if the NIC does not support it.

There are no built-in NICs for these units :-/ Unfortunately being 2U machines they only have 1x PCI backplane slots (populated by the NIC).
