did you install the 1942 patches ? when you installed 1942 did you install gamespy and punkbuster ? the multiplayer side must have them to run on most servers. recently reinstalled 1942 and had same errors, but mine turned out to be ram issue running with A64, set to auto config in BIOS and now...
looks too much like EQ II. I prefer games that are more comic like, not realistic, and especially ones that suck at being realistic. Just missing something, anyone else ?
Good taste ! words can do no justice to those bands, but sufice it to say, they blow away todays bands hands down. I have several LP but won't sell any, sorry. Original Beatles, Cream, Jeff Beck, LZ of course, stuff from early 60's through mid eighties when I switched over to CD. Good luck and...
of course Knoppix runs off the cd and not the hard drive, so you are comparing apples and oranges. The only thing that tells you is you have no huge cpu/motherboard/ram issue. That is good news. I would suspect the primary hard drive, use a diagnostic app from that drive manufacturer, they all...
ahhh, sorry. At first I read as having no money. In that case go to the local thrift store and get an old P II for $5, a monitor for another 5, and surf the net for almost nothing. Unlimited budget ? maybe spend 2 grand on a pc, and give the other 5 grand that folks would waste on stupid parts...
yeah I know what you mean, you ask them to bring all ther driver cd's and you get nothing. btw, VIA makes very good chipsets. I used to believe ALi was crap too, but then I tested an ASUS board that had one, the busmastering was the best of any socket 7 I ever saw. The 503+ was awesome, used a...
in order of worst offense to lesser offenses
touching the screen
shoving the monitor so someone can look at the screen. why not gently ?
failing to admit the spyware came from their doing
using IE
spraying the monitor by laughing with your mouth full of soda, yes it happened
not cleaning...
lithium, thanks for the reply. not trying to be a troll, but there are so many folks who say a computer is slow and blame this and that when it is usually the system itself that is at fault. you can have a fast motherboard / chipset/ cpu but a slow drive will make people scream that the computer...
yes you are entitled to your opinion. the more people debate and the more they demand fast cpu, the more I realize how little they know abut the actual cpu itself. how other parts of the computer affect over all speed. to blame a cpu for the computer being slow is simply not right.
there are...
all of the above cpu are perfectly capable. to call an A64 slow is ludicrous, to call an XP slow is goofy. they all run the apps of their day just fine, often it is the carbon based processors that are slow.
could be video card overheating but more likely the power supply, watch the voltage with a hardware monitor program. if it were cpu it would freeze or not boot at all, what is the highest temp you have seen ?
I can understand your need for speed if your apps need it. I just goof around and play some games, from all ages. The P Pro is used with 98 SE and 128 MB EDO on a FX motherboard in a vintage 1997 Micron computer. Runs great, has SCSI, Matrox card etc. If you use old cpu then you have to match...
yeah well the whole upgrade thing is a myth anyway. sure the 4400 is faster, but do you really need it or use it ? socket A is fine, running an XP3200 and no need to OC. My wife uses an XP1600, my son an XP1700 OC to 1.8 GHz. This computer ? Pentium Pro with 1 meg cache. My new toy is a P II 333...
For the 3200 get a Abit NF7-S , ver 2. Use Corsair Value Select 2.5 CAS 2x 512. Use any SATA drive you like, and a fairly modern video card. Make sure you get an adequate cooler for the cpu, and variable speed fan would be nice to turn down to lower noise but still keep at 40 C or so.
Yes, three socket A in this home. For several reasons. First and foremost is I don't need to upgrade, yet. My son and I play EQ II, BF1942, CoD, HL2, and even Oblivion just fine. No real need to waste money on PCI-E, SLI, etc. It is MUCH more fun maximize your computer by tweeking, than to...
duh, and who makes up 90 % of gamers ? kids on really low budgets. The other side of the coin is the fact that back in 2003 you could get by just fine with a XP1700 and 512 MB ram. There was no compeling reason the buy a much more expensive shiney new CPU. That was the beauty of the XP. It...
northwood are good cpu, but XP's were cheaper so AMD was the choice of many. Conroe is the first CPU to put a hurtin on AMD since 1999 when slot A was released and beat all P3. From 99 to present AMD was the gamers choice. Looks like it may be 50/50 and all come down to loyalty for whichever...
the desk of course, the floor is for dust bunnies. can get kicked, susceptible to sudden jolts when someone jumps or bounces a ball, kicks the floor . not good for hard drive. many reasons to avoid the floor. but that is where my wife puts hers anyway ! silly gurl she is !
look at this way, unless you add 2 or 3 512 MB sticks of ram, you are limited anyway. Still 768 MB of ram is plenty to play some games that are just a few years old. So if you stay with 768, and the XP1900 then I wouldn't bother with anything newer than the X800 or 6800 series card. With either...
the original XP 1900 is a good cpu, do not underestimate it. There are tons of games that cpu can run, my son uses a 1700 OC to 1.8 GHz, and a X800 pro. Runs EQ II, COD, COD2, Oblivion, etc just fine. May not be able to max out the resolution since his LCD is 1024 x 768, but he has a blast. The...
have very similar rig, went from 6800 to X800 XT PE and the image quality is much much better with ATI, better filtering and detail. I am back to ATI and very pleased with the card, got it used on ebay, but check the forums here often. Good luck and have fun.
well said, I concur. I use AGP in all the games my son and I play, many recent ones. They all run fine. Maybe sometime in a few years I will go PCI-E. Just gave a friend a computer for his bike shop, runs XP Pro and has a Matrox 4 MB card, PCI for video. You would have a very hard time telling...
dunno, I went from 6800 to X800 XT PE and the image quality at the same resolution was better with the ATI card. Much better, sharper, better filtering of textures. I have used many of both ATI and nVidia, and have always felt ATI was the better quality card. I feel nVidia plays on fps, while...
you know, when the GF 3 came out it was a good card right out of the box. There have been other good cards. But no, not good enough. Instead we get an UPGRADE from the excellent 6800 series, the 7000 series. Why ? 7800. Not good enough. Now the 7900. Not good enough. Now the overclocked versions...
was gonna say run a hard drive diagnostic from the manufacturer, but the new drive changed that. I would say your power supply for sure. Also make sure you motherboard looks okay, no bad caps, etc but if you are running a 6800 then the board can't be too old. What power supply are you using ?
I use everything from an XP 3200 down to a Cyrix M II 300, moslty AMD. I have a large cpu collection, little pieces of history and all still work too. I prefer low power computers.
power supply ? you don't need that, just run the power straight from the wall. saves you a ton of money ! upgrade to a 7900 ! see ? that was easy
I went with a PCI sound card just to reduce CPU use, a SB Live but itz about the same as my on board, maybe some better. Get a good one though.
Your Barton should run a little cooler even under load, I use a XP3200 and it stays 45 C or below now matter what. I use a Thermaltake variable...
a bed may not have static, it depends on a lot of variables. humidity, what you are wearing, what the material is made of etc.
to comment of the other posts, you better believe static can fry your hardware. ESD is not a myth, and even if it does not kill it , the damage can be cumulative...
X800 XT PE with AS3 and used Arctic Cooler 5 runs <40 C idle, <50 C full load. The case has a blow hole for the card and room temp is 72-80 F. The cooler you have should do better than what you are getting. I would leave the shim on for sure.
dunno but I ditched my 6800 for an X800 XT PE, and not only was it faster but at the same resolution the X800 looks way better. ATI has always had the better image quality, but they are really way ahead of the competition in that respect, so I say go ATI even if the other camp comes up with a...
