    Network Thermostat

I have the nest. It's super nice and I will buy it again if this one ever dies or I buy a new house. I'm quite certain it does need to be connected to the internet as it reports your usage info to their servers (from which you'll get monthly energy reports) it also pulls down updates as they...

    iTunes quick question

You can also drop them in the "Automatically Add to iTunes" directory within your iTunes folder and iTunes will add them to your library and move them to where they need to go.

Just got an Apple TV...worth using?

I pass to iTunes as part of my perl script. After the file is tagged, I move it to the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder which then automatically picks up and adds it based on the metadata. I'm going to have to review the api on themoviedb.org and see how to pass the English setting to it.

Just got an Apple TV...worth using?

Um, multiplexing "aka muxing" is taking multiple parts and joining them in to one. Or taking an audio track and joining to to a video track. Trans-coding would be a more appropriate term even if all you're doing is changing the container. I guess if your file is already tagged, etc then...

Just got an Apple TV...worth using?

I tried switching to Roku and found they are complete garbage. Interface is horrific, they are terrible at streaming anything local, and they are slow and cumbersome. I had three, I've given them all away. Around the the home my primary streaming device for my TVs are AppleTVs. I have one on...

    SMTP experts, question?

I'm not sure what you're trying to gain by adding a dot? IMO, their email address should be the same as their usernames. Their email addresses should also not change due to a migration...talk about a nightmare. Also, I've come across many devices (network devices in particular) that do not...

    server room of doom

You said commercial tile, but what kind specifically? Is this raised floor tile or is this ceramic tile? If it's ceramic, is it anti-static? If it's not specifically anti-static ceramic tile (or raised data center tile) then just know that ceramic tile actually builds a shit ton of static...

Why make it so difficult? Curling almost any of those sites will work. e.g. curl -s http://myexternalip.com/raw $ curl -s http://myexternalip.com/raw <my external ip> $

What's your pick for a hosting service?

Pretty much exactly my same story. I started with shared hosting accounts, knew I could do it better (after trying dozens of different providers) so I moved to a VPS...again knew I could do it better so I moved to a dedicated server. Now today I have started my own small hosting company all...

Who here hosts a web server on a cable connection?(dynamic IP)

lol, thanks for the quality education on how DHCP works. This whole thread proves your broad statement is incorrect. Just because the ISP you worked for did it that way doesn't mean all do it that way. Your statement may have been correct for your ISP but it's too broad of a statement to say...

Creating a site for selling computers

Ummm...if you are starting a store front/e-commerce site, I would start with a piece of e-commerce software, not a blogging software that can be made to work. Check out Open Cart, it's simple to install, simple to design, and simple to list products and take payments through.

    Best domain service?

Namecheap, I personally have nearly 100 domains that I own and currently they are mostly with GoDaddy, I'm in the process of moving them over to namecheap. I'm tired of the GoDaddy attitude that they can do whatever they want because they are so big. Reality is, Namecheap is probably pretty...

    Wired Home Network Setup....

Yes, heat could be an issue. Depends on how hot and humid it gets where you are at. Ideal temperature for most things like this is around 74-78 degrees (that where most DCs cold rows are set to). Reality is, it may or may not be fine. I've had many routers that would over heat if they did...

Who here hosts a web server on a cable connection?(dynamic IP)

lol...that's a broad (and incorrect) statement. My Qwest (now Century Link) account would change every couple hours, my Comacst business account has changed once since I've had it (about a month). It's 100% up to your particular carrier, and not just the carrier but the carrier for you region...

    Wired Home Network Setup....

Some things I did when we built our house... Drops on nearly every wall in every room (infact every drop has three network drops and a coax connection, so yes some rooms have 15 network drops and 5 coax connections). Just because they are there doesn't mean you have to use them, but if you...

    iTunes needs to die. Immediately.

Like I said above, you simply don't know how to use the program. That does't make it a crappy program. You can have your songs organized how ever you want, as long as you setup you library correctly (to your preference) it doesn't care where your music is. You can have a whole album and each...

    Router/Firewall suggestions (commercial)

Yeah, I mentioned that earlier, he added the permit any any to rule out the access list rules as where it's hanging up. No it's not ideal and will be removed. The reason the ips aren't mapped is because the servers are assigned public ips, this was by design. As for the natting, I would...

    Router/Firewall suggestions (commercial)

Yeah, I'll get it uploaded in a few. Yeah, the actual packet loss is quite minimal and most of it is on the carriers lines, rarely do I see loss at my asa or at one of my servers. Even when I watch the interfaces on the asa and on my switch, I don't see packet loss, even when I do a flood...

I do, I was going to go over that and see what the differences are. One big change was a new /24 was added, so I can't just rollback to that config, otherwise I'll drop connectivity for half of my customers. Good to know, I'll give them a look. Thanks

    Router/Firewall suggestions (commercial)

Yeah, I'm 100% sure it's not the server. I have a half dozen bare metal servers, more than a dozen VPSes, and a standalone NAS device in my network and they all show the same symptoms. When I see hangs, I don't see anything in the logs other than the request was served. Like I said, nothing...

    Router/Firewall suggestions (commercial)

Well, I have always configured it myself in the past (and it's always been 100% stable without any issues). I was recently upgrading my service at my DC, moving cabinets, etc so I figured it would be a good idea to have someone that really knows this stuff come in and set it up properly (I'm...

    iTunes needs to die. Immediately.

I'd disagree. I've had the same library for who knows how long. YEARS. I've had dozens of iPhones, iPads, iPods, it's been transferred between different NAS devices, systems, etc. I'm currently managing almost 1100 movies, almost 2000 TV shows, ~20 Gb of music (that's my small part anymore...

    Router/Firewall suggestions (commercial)

I'm sure it's been asked lots, but here it is again. I currently have an ASA 5505 with the security bundle. This is not for my home, but for a rack I have at a local data center. I'm looking to possibly try something else. What else would you guys suggest to take a look at in the sub $600...

Is it worth defragmenting a simple RAID5/6 server used as a terminal server?

I agree with the sysadmin as well. They know the situation better than any of the users. It always drove me nuts when a user would make retarded suggestions (not saying your suggestion is retarded...just let the sysadmin do what they are paid to do).

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Background agents writing out to stdout is slopping coding. Those Warning/Info/Error/etc should all be writing to a log file instead of stdout. You can't monitor stdout like you can a log file, meaning unless someone is sitting on the console all the time, it will be very easy to miss issues.

    virtualisation: vmware vs parallels?

VMWare Fusion is by far better. I own Parallels 6 (and a couple previous versions) and I own Fusion 4 (and all the previous versions). I use Fusion almost every day. Every once in a while I get tempted to buy/use (depending on if an update is available) Parallels and I always come away...

    HDD Prices rocketing?

Not sure, there weren't any stickers that had to be broken to get it open though. I could put it back together and you'd never know it was apart. I'll see if I can lookup the serial number on Seagate's site.

    HDD Prices rocketing?

FWIW, Costco has their 2TB Seagate Go Flex Desk external drives for $99 right now, and on black friday and the following saturday, they will have an additional $30 off (they'll price match ;) ). I bought 6 of them with the intention of using them in my NAS box I'm building. Got home, tore one...

If you were building a new house, what are some awesome IT upgrades you recommend?

What I did when building my house almost 5 years ago was, I used Cat6 throughout the house. I had a "data" drop (each data drop consists of 2 cat6 cables and a coax) pulled to every wall in nearly every room (kitchen and laundry rooms included). Rooms where there are TVs, or long walls, I had...

    vps question

I've used vpses in the past, currently I have a dedicated server for all my sites. I used Dreamhost VPS and it was ok, kinda spendy for what you actually get.
