BT version of the speakers have a pretty critical flaw if you live in any kind of apartment or shared space. BT pairing is always active, no way to turn it off. And BT audio sources will over-ride the wired connection. Neighbors or housemates can connect to the speakers any time they want...
I haven't posted in a while, and you can probably guess why given my last post was a photo of my wife ready to go into labor any day now. I haven't had a chance (or the motivation/energy to be honest!) to go out and do any winter landscape photography since my daughter was born...I was actually...
My wife's due date is approaching very very soon (could be any day now, really) so my photography focus is going to take a pretty big turn here for a while. I will try to get out to do some winter landscapes here but it'll probably be a lot of newborn/family portraits for a bit. Last weekend...
It's not even October yet, and snow is already coming to South Dakota. I'm guessing it's gonna be a long, rough winter this year.

It's that time of year! But to be honest I don't think the Black Hills are that great for autumn colors. There's not as much variety as I'd prefer, compared to other places I've been.

Note to self - do more astrophotography at the beginning of nighttime, right after the end of blue hour. I caught some absolutely crazy color in the sky a few weeks ago. Not photoshopped!

Sunrise in RMNP - the Labor Day traffic to the Bear Lake parking lot was definitely no joke. By the time I left around 7:45 AM, the parking lot was absolutely, 100% full and I passed numerous cars going up as I went back down!

Next up, landscape photos from my Labor Day weekend trip to Colorado!
Need more practice with manual focus lenses...and just need to spend more time actually using them.
Pavina with the 105mm f/2.5 AI-S by David Gevert, on Flickr
This was the first shoot I did where I extensively used HSS during the session...I think I'm in love with my AD200s (Flashpoint eVOLVs). This was shot using two in the AD-B2 accessory, with a 43" octabox.

Now for something very different from the content you guys usually see from me...I did a paid family photoshoot a few weeks ago, my first shoot of the type. I gained a newfound respect for the family photographers out there (though, of course, that sector of photography is still saturated by...
Gave star trail photography a go last night for the first time!
Star Trails and Meteor Showers by David Gevert, on Flickr
The big take-away: don't expose for as bright of a sky as you normally would for astroscapes. Capturing TOO many stars makes for busy star trails. It's almost too much. :)
Different color processing and editing style:
Milky Way and Mars over the Badlands by David Gevert, on Flickr
I think I like this approach a little better, but it could go either way.
FINALLY got my Nikon 14-24mm back to me in a usable condition. Only took several months and two trips back to Nikon. But hey, it gave me an excuse/justification to get a Nikon 20mm f/1.8, which I've wanted for a while...
Milky Way and Planets over the Badlands by David Gevert, on Flickr
I could've sworn the AF fine-tune system in my previous full-frame Nikons could be calibrated with AI-S lenses, but that doesn't seem to be the case on my D850. But fortunately, it seems to be within spec without any fine-tuning from me (as do all of the other prime lenses I've tried so far.)...
Yeah, and the intended viewing distance also matters on large prints. Very few people are going to put their nose right next to a large print and carefully examine it. I think it was FStoppers that did a video that showed billboards were commonly printed at something like 2 megapixels?
So the D850's large viewfinder made manual focusing a bit easier than I expected. I tried out my AI-S 105mm f/2.5 lens on my dog. I'm used to the ground glass in modern DSLRs making it difficult to tell what's really in focus, but I could see it pretty clearly and it was confirmed by the...
JStamsek, are you out in the open for these shots? I'm curious when you decide to pack up and head indoors.
I can't seem to find it now, but I saw an absolutely spectacular storm shot over a canyon on the FredMiranda forums, where the photographer said he literally got struck by lightning...
It's a bit dependent on a lot of factors...weather (including humidity), how close you are to major sources of light pollution, etc. The general rule is to take the widest lens you have, with the fastest aperture, dial up the ISO to the highest usable range you have access to, and then focus on...
On this trip out to Center Lake, I also tried out my new camera for the first time... I've joined the Fuji club. Here's a shot of our dog, MJ, with the Fuji X-T2 and 18-55 lens. I don't plan on picking up any other Fuji lenses...I plan on the X-T2 being a more casual camera that I'm going to...
Water like glass throughout the night = an excellent opportunity to actually photograph the milky way reflected in the water itself!
Milky Way Reflected by David Gevert, on Flickr
Gotta love perfectly still water at lakes...nabbed this sunset photo, and then a few hours later, I got a terrific milky way shot, with the core of the milky way itself reflecting in the water. That's very rare - the water has to be nearly perfectly still! I'll post the milky way shot...
I know this isn't a photography forum but I figured that there are people interested in camera equipment here as well, so I'll post what I have on offer here.
EDIT: ALL ITEMS SOLD
First up is a gray market Nikon D750: $900 shipped.
only 2,572 shutter clicks. I bought this in Singapore...
Finally made it to one of the Black Hills' "hidden gems" - though it's not too secret any more. This is also the maiden photo trip for my new D850. And of course, 46 megapixels wasn't enough for me, so I had to do a panorama to boot. Heh.
