Actually a keyboard is not limited to 8 way movement because your movement on screen is a combination of the keyboard and the mouse. With practice, the same system that provides superior aiming, also provides superior movement. You are in effect "aiming" your character in a certain direction.

How many points of movement in a joystick? It used to be 8. With a mouse and keyboard you are in the 360 range. More accurate, smooth and precise.

With some practice you will not even have to think what you are doing. A keyboard and mouse gives you much more control than a game controller so it is worth the time you spend developing your skill.
