20TB Data Archival a year on the cheap .... help

First off, you are being put into a really hard position as you don't have a lot of money to really work with. All solutions on this will be fairly patch worked together. Do they actually have offsite storage for these tapes/drives? Anywho, drives can fail, especially if they have come out of...

I ended up picking it up from the Gamefly deal for the xbox. Beat it a couple nights ago. I'm not sure what RA Salvatore had to do with it but it doesn't seem like his writing style. Anywho, if you want the xbox version, PM me

24 port switch recommendation, New or used?

I assume you want gigabit? Do you need it to be a managed switch? On ebay you can snag Dell Powerconnects (2724 or 2824) which would give you gig and layer 2.

    Desktop NAS Recommendations?

Qnap and Synology are going to be your best bets at that price range. Throw a external usb drive onto the NAS that it backs up to and enjoy. Unless you want to roll your own box and run something like freenas.

VMware has officially released their updated software.

I get where you are coming from but you want your ESXi box to be fairly stripped down. I don't want a webserver running on each host. Just opens too much security issues on each host.

Hack caused BSOD and Locked up Servers

Possible botched rootkit or permission elevation attempt? Though I think that is really unlikely. You have one box open to the net. They are going to look to root that then move to the others. If you've had RDP open to the internet then you've had many many people daily rattling the door...

    Server in basement? Concerns?

Eh.. they are 2950s, they are pretty cheap and easy to acquire now days. I'd keep the NAS inside the office and just run those 2950s in a horrid dirty environment. It'll also test out your fail over vmotion fun. You could pretend you are the network server admin at a dinosaur dig site out...

Hack caused BSOD and Locked up Servers

Only if you have your Sonicwall setup to dump logs out to syslog or email. Was this box behind on patches? The only thing I can think of is there are a few RDP exploits that are possible. Nobody is going to want to hack and then just bluescreen systems, they'd want to get in and hang out...

Lots of activity on my routers log

If you can think about it in reverse and only allow a few IPs that you typically connect from. You can always add the range for your cell provider and use that in a pinch to rdp in and open to other IPs if you happen to be connecting from a non-typical connection. Other than that. Patch and...

    Postini Alternative

BTW you guys may find this amusing. While watching a youtube video the pre-ad was from Barracuda targeting folks "Left high and dry by Postini to Google apps migration". They even made a custom page for it. https://www.barracudanetworks.com/postini The more I dig into the postini topic the...

I think the problem is there is Google Apps and Postini. When you read the current Google Apps documentation it may or may not take in Postini language of the future. Again this is the trouble of doing business with Google, you don't talk to google or ask them questions. They announce. I'm...

    Postini Alternative

I'm confused. Why do you think they are phasing out Postini? The only thing they cut was the continuity product and everything else they are doing is a rebranding of the Postini name over to Google Apps. I've asked around to make sure they are not going to ax the features we use...

Wondering about ZFS hand built vs. Thecus

Ahh the fun of open source projects. There was a shift in the community when FreeNAS went a more commercial route and wanted to stop supporting the legacy FreeNAS 7. Most people found 8 to be buggy (it is pretty good now days). The 7 group went off and did NAS4FREE. Honestly I run FreeNAS...

    Software firewall with email reporting?

Configure the system so that it has to VPN to the home office and browse from there. Either by having the employee RDP into a TS or Desktop at the main office. That way it'll follow compliance of the office.

Outlook 2007 Inbox Repair Tool Virus?

scanpst is a real utility, I'm not sure why you think it is a virus. The name is most likely the renaming that happened during patching. If your PST file for your outlook is corrupt, you'll want to attempt to fix it. You could also make a new outlook profile and resetup your hotmail...

    Home network issue... need help...

    very weird outlook problem`

If you are using pop3 as your method for checking messages then they are being brought down to the local client level and handled there. So you'll want to check out your Outlook 2007 pst file that is managing that store for the account. I doubt it would be a network or security issue.

WHS v1 to WHS2011 questions and Upgrade path.

WHS 2011 is in a weird position right now. Discontinued but as I understand supported in patches for a while. Though the announcement will pretty much kill off any growth or progress from the community and plugin developers. Getting a technet subscription might be best for your lab. You'll...
