What's a good therman grease? Are thermal pads any good?

Didn't know that existed. Nice option for someone who wants a 10850K or 10900K and Z590. I thought hard on that configuration, who doesn't want the 10 cores? Especially since this was a 2nd machine for me alongside a 5900X, and it ended up replacing it after playing with both of them. My Z590...

What's a good therman grease? Are thermal pads any good?

Completely agree. Needs revisiting. You seem well informed, where are you on reddit? ;) I don't have a reddit account anymore, so I'm joking. When they do the Alder Lake reviews though, if they disable MCE again (not only is it default on, and statistically few change BIOS options at all, as...

What's a good therman grease? Are thermal pads any good?

You're correct for sure, I don't recall as I pieced this together and ran all those typical benchmarks back in early May. Temps are higher than mid to low 50s that I see in my gaming. But I will note, my measurement isn't just while gaming, I use 8 thread Steam Link software encoding from my...

What's a good therman grease? Are thermal pads any good?

I've run CB on this, and it holds 5.1Ghz on all 8 cores during a run if I remember correctly. I typically only care about what I actually use my machine for though. I mostly watch the stats for my use cases, because I think that's a bit more intelligent to focus on. The way mine is configured...

What's a good therman grease? Are thermal pads any good?

The paste crowd has been split 50/50 for years on this. Some use pastes formulated for sub-ambient cooling like a lot of Thermal Grizzly pastes and maybe gain a celsius or two, but they do dry up. At risk of angering everyone, I believe it's just improper use based on a misreading of benchmarks...

    What made you switch?

Just to follow up on the bold quote there on the Zipcar app. That was because I had Apple's zoom mode enabled. Which makes everything bigger on the screen, basically making it very similar to the old 4" screen's real estate. That's how much I like a small phone, losing real estate for larger and...

What's a good therman grease? Are thermal pads any good?

I've used an IC graphite thermal pad, the 40x40mm version for about 4 years now on 3 different heatsinks. Never had a problem with it, and it's even torn now. Still use it anyway. I have a good amount of things going on right now across my triple monitor setup, Spotify, RDP session, Firefox...

    The last train of Microsoft

Interesting take. I think MS should just partner with any vendor that wants to enable their headset on their platforms (Win11 / Xbox). It's true MS could compete but I don't see the point. Depending on well it takes off for Facebook, for the heavy hitters we'll probably see FB / Samsung / Apple...

    11900K Benched

So that statement actually is completely true. But not the whole story. I was faced with the decision of Z590 ITX boards and was also between the Gigabyte and Asus. The Asus Z590-i is cooler than the Gigabyte both with the Asus's VRM fan on, and with it completely disabled...

    What made you switch?

The 6.1" phones like the base 12 and most Androids are definitely my limit too. I know pretty much everyone here has one besides me.. so I can't just talk trash without getting pummeled.. but some have expressed regrets on the Max/Plus phones. I really don't want to buy a ~6" phone unless I'm...

    What made you switch?

Interesting, I haven't thought about that. This is just the 1 of 1,000 ways to do things and there's always something. I would never leave just empty space myself, as I consider my apps that aren't in folders as my core, frequently accessed apps. I may play around with it sometime and see. Even...

    What made you switch?

What do you mean by this? I use all my folders at the bottom, and just moved one to the top to see if I was missing something. An aside, that's 71% battery left after all day on a 12 mini. That said, phones are utility for me. Battery life is kind of subjective based on use-cases. My wife has...

    What made you switch?

Yes, Wacom EMR FTW. That's why I bought my wife the Samsung Notebook 9 Pen, their 2-in-1s were the only models on the market that I know that use it. I didn't know about that HP. My wife wouldn't accept that because she used to work for HP and isn't a fan. :) And, I like Samsung honestly...

    What made you switch?

I already told my story plus detailed some software differences between iOS and Android.. but that post reminded me- I do have you beat on 2+ years with your phone. I went 5 years with my iPhone SE that I paid a whole $280 for new. I never came close to going 5 years with any of my Android...

    What made you switch?

One thing about this that I think people will find interesting, not on the 60hz + "bad" battery life comment but on Apple's 60Hz devices is that while being true, one of the reasons iOS often still feels smoother than Android is because the render loop of the OS is decoupled from the app by...

    What made you switch?

It's a mighty fine device, but even 5.4" on the mini is a bit overboard IMO. Can't imagine stretching 1 hand across a 6" screen with any regularity. I'll take a closer look at the successor to the Pixel 5 though the next time I upgrade.

    What made you switch?

If you define bad battery life as all day, as most do. I bought mine on launch day, even set my alarm to get in the first minute they were put up to order. Never had my 12 mini die on me once and here we are July 9th, 2021, been using it since November ~15th, 2020. Then there's also the fact...

    What made you switch?

I use a 12 mini and my spouse has a 11 Pro Max. There's no comparison in battery life between the two. Mine is widely known to have bad battery life, but I'm also not a heavy phone user and knew it would be "bad" when I bought it. I've never not had it get me through a whole day. Someone who is...

Whea Internal Parity Error on 10850K stock!

Without evidence suggesting otherwise, I'd say yes, coincidence. If happens again on July 28th, maybe check what scheduled tasks you have configured. Your issue is why I don't understand why every yokel on the internet is forcefully pushing everyone to 10th gen Intel over 11th. They're not...

Whea Internal Parity Error on 10850K stock!

Neither. It's a known Skylake design issue that only presents itself on higher core count CPUs since Skylake wasn't originally designed to go to 8 or more cores. You can live with it or, since your board supports Rocket Lake you can put an 11th gen CPU in and you won't have the issue.

    What made you switch?

Between Android and iOS, I started with Android because it was originally the only easy way to share a data connection with PCs. They also were first to market with advances like 4G. I ended up moving to iOS years ago because it always felt like my Android was yet another computer that I had to...

Whea Internal Parity Error on 10850K stock!

This is one of the things that reviewers won't tell people about, stability/quality. Whether it's Intel or AMD, and they're unquestionably covering up for a lot of AMD design flaws. What you're experiencing is one of the relatively well-known flaws with all SkyLake-KabyLake-CoffeeLake-CometLake...

FS: AMD Ryzen 5900X **PRICE DROP**

That's exactly why I don't want PayPal, the fees. And definitely no one offers to pay them, but I'll reopen an account for you if you want that. I've never had a problem on either side. While I don't do returns, I always do everything I can. I sent a video card to Canada years ago, and their...

Price drop. Now I'm under my cost for the CPU. My loss is your gain! This chip was installed for 2 months, had a Noctua D15 on it to keep it cool, and was never overclocked.

    Import passwords into Firefox?

It should be pretty clear that I fully realize that, and didn't say otherwise. My comment there, in context was that it was the closest thing to what he wanted but removing such an error-prone setup. I don't care if my passwords are on someone else's server. The risk involved, someone or someone...

    Import passwords into Firefox?

The closest thing to that other than having a risky/error prone setup like you're running into, is the KeePass database on Dropbox or OneDrive. That grants you a standard format, ~30 days of backup through the cloud provider, and as much security as you can while still gaining redundancy. To...

    Import passwords into Firefox?

If you install the old version of Firefox that you had, it could have saved that addons data in Firefox's sync storage. Chance of it. Once you get that out, might be a way to get it into Firefox's Lockbox. I use KeePass on OneDrive and it works well, no reliance on any browser addons.. plenty of...

    Is VR even worth it?

Idiotic. Even if you've tried VR but don't own a headset, you honestly don't have enough time with one to form a worthwhile opinion. Furthest thing from a gimmick. Just got my Quest last month and its immersion can't be matched and it's the future. If there's a criticism for VR, well you clearly...

    Biostar Racing X370-GTN ITX AM4

While I've had a lot less issues with my Asus X470-i, I found a common issue between both my Biostar and Asus boards worth posting here. When I switched CPU fans from one to another I found the new fan would stop responding to the settings in the UEFI. I resolved it on the Asus by touching the...

Ryzen 2700 vs 2700x in overclocking?

80C and 90F? Big difference. I never see 80C on my system, as noted 75C is the max I've ever encountered. I'm using a Node202. The C1 is a good cooler. It's far too tall for my case. The C7 is a lot smaller, but I have the all copper edition which helps a little bit.

    Ryzen vs Coffee Lake

I'm seeing up to 30% in my Java and .Net projects. It may not affect everyone but it affects me, and I wouldn't recommend people buy Intel until it's fixed.. you never know when you need your IO performance. Maybe you're just gaming today.... but it's a general purpose machine. If you just want...

    Ryzen vs Coffee Lake

That was true until Intel Meltdown/Spectre. With Meltdown perf penalties in my work I see 30% performance reduction. For gamers, ya they don't even matter, just wasting time.. sure, great, anything works for them, including a Playstation.

    Ryzen vs Coffee Lake

No, I also bought an 1800X alongside my 1700. I bought a 2700X on release too, using it now. Wouldn't come near a 8700K that shit is garbage with the Meltdown flaw.

First AMD build in 12 years.

Yup I got the Asus X470-i and I've almost always gone Asus but I'm noticing a little slacking on their part. I had very few great options for X470 mITX but I might go Gigabyte next time. GB has been growing fast and is very close to Asus' market cap if not overtaken by now.

Ryzen 2700 vs 2700x in overclocking?

I hear you. Ya I know, I'm not a fan of downclocking/volting. If you want something lesser than what you bought... buy a 65W TDP CPU next time. :D I've bought both and if forced to buy 65 or 105 TDP chips, I'd go 65. While the entire performance curve is going to be different, if the max boost...
