The cost is the same for me since I work for the company providing the service. We were getting close to our limit every month so I thought why not. I also needed a wi-fi upgrade anyway.
I am OK with 1 Gbps LAN. My only wired units are a printer and a desktop PC with a gigabit ethernet port. I just want the connection from the router to the modem to support 5Gbps. In looking at that router I could use the 10baseT port to connect to the modem correct?
So I've upgraded from 1Gbps to 5Gbps fiber and got a new modem with a 5Gb LAN port. I'm currently using an Asus AC2900 with 1Gbps LAN. I'd like to get a router with at least a 5Gbps WAN port but most of what I see is 2.5Gbps. Is there a wireless router with a 5Gbps LAN port?
I pulled the trigger on a Gigabyte M27Q and it seems like it will work well, and being on sale didn't hurt. However I have a stuck pixel that shows if there is a white background on the desktop. I have not seen it in a game yet. I tried running jscreenfix first for 15 minutes, then 20, then...
I currently have an Asus ROG STRIX X470-F motherboard and I am using on-board sound. I thought the sound was fine but after listening to some gameplay videos with better setups I feel like mine is a little tinny and not as rich/deep. I'm using Senheiser GSP 302 headphones and yes I can hear...
Is this a good price for an AE-7? It seems newer than an AE-5. I just want some better sound than on board audio for games. I've upped my budget a little bit from an earlier post. I don't think I need an external DAC for what I'm doing. Also do I need the desktop volume control or is that...
So I poked around a little more, increased my budget and I'm stuck between the following:
LG GL850B - Expensive but everyone seems to like it.
Gigabyte M27Q - On sale right now for around $300 but quality control seems to be inconsistent. Scores a little higher on Rtings
MSI MAG 27QR4QRF- QD -...
I found these in a box in the back of the closet. Evidently I had delusions of grandeur for my 8800GTS that was replaced years ago. I guess these might be considered "vintage" now that they are over 5 years old.
I built a new PC about 2 years ago and I'm looking to upgrade the sound. I'm currently using the on-board sound on an Asus ROG Strix X470-F. I haven't bought a sound card in about 12 years and the last one I owned was a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic 7.1. I have a basic set of desktop...
Some of the Slickdeals links only had 1080 monitors until I found this one:

Is this a decent one? It is a little less expensive than the LGs.
I currently have a Samsung Syncmaster S24B240 and a Geforce GTX 1660Ti and I'm looking for a replacement. I've been reading about IPS, VA, bad blacks, good blacks, curves, color gamuts, 1080 vs 1440 and my brain is melting at this point.
I don't play competitive gaming although I do...
So with all the stay at home stuff going on and a fiber connection I wanted to see about upgrading my 5 year old Asus RT-N66U router. I don't need bleeding edge and I don't want to spend a huge amount of money. I was looking at the AC-86U but didn't know if that was still viable. I have two...
So I started my new build with this thing and I had a couple of questions.
1. I am running a single graphics card (1660Ti) and was thinking about installing it in the 2nd PCIe slot. All 3 are listed as PCI 16. That would bring the exhaust fans about 3 inches from the bottom of the case...
Well AMD said to send it back to the store (Amazon). Miraculously I got the replacement CPU the same day. As you can see below there is a huge difference in how the bottom looks. Already have it installed.
Thanks for all the replies. I don't mind putting more thermal paste on although I hadn't thought of the toothpick trick. My concern is more with the unevenness of the thin plates between the heatpipes and the black goop squeezing out. I've opened a case with AMD and we'll see what happens...
I already have an NVMe drive for the OS and apps. I need at least 2 TB for storage and SSDs in those sizes are close to $300. Crucial 2TB SSD is $289 and the Evo 860 is $347.
So after pricing a 2TB Evo SSD I've realized that large SSD drives are way out of my budget. I have a couple of Seagate Barracuda 320GBs I use for storage that are about 13 years old and nearly full.
Is it worth using a Hybrid drive for storage? If not what is a good brand of "spinner"? I...
Yes it is the OEM Wraith Spire or whatever they call it. Did I get a defective heatsink? Should I ask for an RMA?
If not, what is the new hotness for thermal compound? I have some Arctic Silver 5 but it is at least 7 years old and partially separated. I don't have the skill or the time to...
So I'm getting ready to start building my new Ryzen rig. I open the CPU box and carefully slide the cooling fan out. I turn it over and see this:
I can't tell if it is a divot or a piece of embedded something. Should I wipe everything off and apply something new, see if I can pick it off...
Amazon was out of stock on the 650 but I found it at Superbiiz with a $10 rebate so it was only $79.99 with free shipping. Opened the box today and there's a $25 Steam gift card offer if I leave a review. Still waiting on the video card and memory from Newegg.
If your budget is $350 why not get this one? Seems to be popular for a price/performance standpoint. It is what I am putting in my new system and I'm coming from a 750 Ti.

I thought about the Silent edition for the case but I couldn't find it cheap. I think this version will be silent enough. I may go to a 750w power supply but I'll have to check prices. I did think about the 2070 but it seemed like I would be spending a lot for a feature I would not be using...
So I've spent the day reading, ordering, reading, calculating and learning how to post my list properly and here's what my final list looks like:
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
CPU: AMD - Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7 GHz 8-Core Processor ($299.99 @ Amazon) (Already here)...
I appreciate that but I am going AMD and the CPU came today. I ended up getting this case for $119 which will save a little money:

Yeah it has a window but for the price I couldn't beat it. I also think I'm going to drop to a 1TB SSD for storage...
Thanks everyone.
I thought I had picked an NVME drive so I don't mind spending a little more for some oomph whether it is noticeable or not. I guess the other concern would be memory latency. What latency should I avoid? My ancient system has 4-4-4-12 but I can't translate those numbers into...
Help me check myself before I wreck myself for a gaming PC.
I play older games on Steam like Sins of Solar Empire and War Thunder (barely) but would like to start World of Warships, Mechwarrior 5 and whatever new Star Wars games may come out. My son wants to get into Fortnite but I don't have...
I think we need to start an AMD old-timers upgrade club.
I'm running an Athlon X2 6000 and I am thinking about going the Ryzen route as well. I did like the looks of the Hero series and while I don't game quite enough to justify it I am also trying to future-proof my new system a little. I...
Ok now that the new chips are out should I go with an I5-8600K or I7-8700K, making the appropriate motherboard and RAM adjustments. If I don't plan to overclock should I get the locked versions of the chips?
Quick question, mid-tower or full tower if I got a new case? I think I can get better airflow from some of the newer case designs like the Define R5. That one isn't much more than what I paid for the P180 ages ago.
Thanks for the responses.
1. I don't live near a Micro Center but some family does.
2. I saw the new Intel processor announcement as well and thought about waiting but some of the items in my build are on sale or have $30 off combo deals. Being 6 months behind doesn't bother me too much but...
Forgive me PC gods for I have sinned. It has been 11 years since my last PC build and this new technology amazes me. Here's the info:
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Primarily gaming and web browsing. Would like to be able to play Battlefront II...
I'm trying to future-proof for Star Wars Battlefront 3. Other than that I really only play Sins of a Solar Empire and War Thunder. I'll probably get the new Homeworld upgrade as well.
So what about getting a 2nd 750 with a new motherboard/cpu/ram and running in SLI mode? Or is there a newer...
