I'll be moving to a new place soon and I'm trying to work out where I want to place my cabinets so that I can maintain proper temperature/humidity to them. Those with home DCs - what do you do (if anything) to maintain a good environment for your equipment?
Darn, I should've taken pictures during the build. I hate to take it apart now because i hot glued a few components so the PCB doesn't push back into the case. I'll try to explain it though - I just did it while watching Modern Family and Colbert :-P
1. De-solder the antennas so they can...
I've been using my old WRT54G running dd-wrt as an AP. I wanted to consolidate rack space so I decided to put it in a 5.25" bay - it's not too pretty, but it works:
I'm using 2x Avocent CPS1610's (one as a spare). I decided to adapt from RS232 on each machine to RJ45 though so I only had to run one type of cable for all machines. Each machine has console redirection to serial for me to control it remotely. Hopefully after this weekend I'll have it...
Finally got my out-of-band system setup (monoprice had been out of RS232 to RJ45 adapters for a month!) and cables are cleaned up. No zip ties allowed, all velcro. Still need proper rails for servers on the bottom half as they are sitting on each other or shelves. Also need to call electrician...
Seconded. I tested it across ~100 yard lake in my back yard (LOS) and still received full signal on the other side with no issues. Definitely overkill for a home network.. but this is [H] afterall ;)
Nice - how much did you get it for? There was one at my local surplus store last week that some other guy snatched up in the 5 minutes from when the store opened until I got there... got it for $15. I was sad. :(
HP 2824 is good investment. I know you said you were looking for something only 12 port though... I picked one up a few months ago on ebay for $250 in good condition and can't say enough good things about it.
Just my 2 cents... Nagios is the long standing network monitoring tool that has a lot of great plugins - but my god is it a pain to setup. You will spend a good amount of time configuring things and customizing the configurations to accommodate all of your system needs - but once you get things...
You're right - but I guess a variable left out here is the price for the unit. I was able to acquire the honeywell for $10 used and then $10 for a replacement filter.
Anyways, we can be picky about the difference in efficiency between these two but I'd rather further this thread by getting...
Well, based on the link you sent me - the Honeywell HEPA I have is rather decent. I am aware the Ionic Breeze devices don't accomplish much, but they were meant as a secondary form of dust control (and were a gift) which consume VERY little power.
Unfortunately, ditching the carpet doesn't...
This is a continuation of sorts from the gallery thread a few weeks back. I was wondering what those of you do to control dust in your home racks. I find this to be a constant battle with my equipment and have been playing with some different solutions recently.
As of now I have 2 of...
Finally tracked down a cabinet in my area and got a great deal on it. It came in yesterday - and I'm waiting on some more mounting hardware to come in so I can move the rest of my equipment in.
I don't dare open the back and take pictures - much more cable management needs to be...
Does anyone have an ionic breeze around their home dc or network equipment? I have one in the same room as my equipment - but it hadn't ever occurred to me that that those things create some sort of static environment in which to attract debris (though maybe I'm way off on that). Does having...
Sigh.. Very jealous. I've been looking constantly on craigslist and ebay but there's nothing available in my area. I may just hold out and keep looking on those sites for a better deal than paying retail. I'm not looking forward to all of the costs to order in all of the different rack...
Can anyone tell me if they've had good or bad experiences with Tripp Lite racks? This looked like a nice price for a 4 post (with free shipping):

While reading through this I can only imagine all the dead insects and dust that would accumulate inside after 6 months (and I have a pretty clean garage).
Thinking about the dust issue, does anyone here do anything special to prevent dust buildup in their home network equipment? I have...
Found something interesting when reading about this UPS further... Turns out you can buy replacement backplates to adapt to the input type you need. Here is a 15A input backplate.. However, since installing it would be downgrading to 15A max for the UPS, it limits the provided capacity of the...
Definitely, which is why I was wary about placing it on the same 30 amp circuit with any other device. That's a lot of power.. I don't think it'd be wise for me to cheap out wiring arrangements.
I decided to just do things right and install a dedicated 30amp circuit for the UPS (and luckily my apartment property manager approved it!) I'm going to just have the receptacle installed right under the panel (about 5 ft away from my server rack). Still waiting for some electrician estimates...
Hi all,
Picked one of these monstrous things up at a surplus sale today for $100 :)
APC Smart-UPS 3000VA RM3U
...Couldn't really beat that price, and with some of the storms in my area lately I wanted a solution to keep my network running vs. depending on the those cheap "office...
What about setting up web-based viewer template and have the monitoring stations connect to your (guessing intranet) website. You could customize which cameras in the camera bank appear to each specific user login. Of course I'm simplifying like crazy because I don't know camera specs/control...
Great project idea! Looks like your closet is only about 2 ft deep though - how are you going to be able to move any servers in there (assuming you're planning to) with that small amount of clearance?
I'm familiar with the techniques to get WOL running on a card that supports it - but the nic installed does not. It won't matter if I configure it to accept WOL commands if the NIC does not support it.
Hi all - I have a few machines I'm trying to setup so that I can start them up remotely. I am using a dual 10/100 nic in the only PCI slot on the machine and it does NOT support WOL. I'm wondering if I could accomplish the triggered start using out-of-band management. I see that Microsoft...
My home network:
Top Shelf: Just storage for old fax/printer, some spare laptops, and external drive enclosrues.
Shelf 4: HP 1006, 8-Port KVM, 3x IBM T23 Thinkpads.
Shelf 3: Modem, Cisco Pix 501, WRT54G on DD-WRT, d-link 8-port gigabit switch, 2x spare 8-port KVMs, HP Procurve...
Does anyone know how to control fan speed on these beasts? They are insanely loud (yes, yes I know they are intended for datacenter env.) and I would like to throttle the speed.
I've looked into controlling the speed through the RSA II integrated controller but I'm running the machine on...
I've been playing around with link aggregation in my home lab for the last few days and wanted to ask a question regarding 803.ad for those who use it in their facilities. Do you notice the difference in performance in using 803.ad vs. just using rr-balance (mode 0) or other modes of link...
Anyone know of any good online suppliers for rackmount UPS (new or used). Found one on newegg but I want something to run a few servers on and I don't think 700VA 400W will cut it. Not really finding anything great on ebay. Any help is appreciated!
Should mention.. this is just for my home...
I own a 4020 and have been using half the top 2.5 rows for drives in use, and the bottom half to store my on-site backups (it's nice to be able to just plug-in the backup drives when needed by having them already in trays). However.. I'm getting to the point I need to use the bottom 2.5 rows...
Yikes! Well then I'll stick to the HP's. I'll keep looking out for a good price on ebay or elsewhere for the 2840 which looks like it would be great for me. Thanks for all of the input everyone (and quick responses!) :)
Wow! Even cheaper than the HP ones and have 802.3ad for ~$100! These seem pretty comparable to the HPs.. anyone know what the HPs have over the dells to make it worth the extra cash?
Looking at the 2800 line, these really do seem like what I'm looking for.. and relatively in my budget range when looking on ebay. Thanks for the input!
