I'm still rocking a full tower Chieftec Dragon case purchased from TigerDirect or Compgeeks back in their heyday as my workbench rig. It cost all of $19 at that time, with a greatly reduced shipping rate the more of them were purchased. I think for one shipped it was $28, but we ended up buying...
Dating back to March of last year when I last futzed with my Slimline, I spent some quality time with it, with a 'fix it or toss it' approach to things. I found that one of the RAM slots is causing my problems, and when that slot is not filled it works fine. I pulled the x2 3800+ and put an x2...
It's been set aside as I struggled last weekend with a failing wifi router (only 6 months old !!). After 20+ years of fixing PCs, I am finding that I can only stomach so many issues at one time. Same day my wifi died, my MSI 970 Gaming board got flakey on me. To add to my misery, my WHS server...
Well, I spent 3 hours working on the box last night. I picked up the Sparkle 270w PSU with adapter from Amazon, and while I had it torn down I replaced the OEM 2x1GB RAM with a pair of Crucial 2x2GB DDR2 sticks. After that, I couldn't get the thing to POST, getting a short beep followed by a...
I picked up an s3000n today that seems to have a failed PSU. I've had my hands on three of these things over the years, and each and every time I am secretly hoping that I can talk the customer into buying a newer PC from me so that I can have their Slimline and go to town on it ! Unfortunately...
Oh, I got the info for you, my friend. Check out this post on what those $15 Xeons can accomplish:

That destroys my el cheapo build, but the key to that build is finding a cheap X58 board. It's such a cheap freakin' build that...
Joining OP with an AMD build, but mine is the ultimate budget box. See below for hardware specs:
AMD FX-6300 - bought used for $70 (includes an Asus mATX AM3 board)
MSI 970 Gamer - bought Monday from Frys for $32 AR
Powercolor 7970 3GB video card - re-use from existing rig
Vertex 4 128GB SSD -...
Another bump for those awesome Dell 2007FPB panels. When our 22" Viewsonic panel at work died, I brought my Dell 2007FPB from home in to replace it. I even added the soundbar that fits underneath the panel to complete the upgrade.
What a beautiful panel compared to the inferior TN panels that...
Bump for a rig very similar to my workbench rig. I keep feeling like I would be better off selling it and moving on, but it just runs so well (and does serve a purpose at some point) that I just can't find it in me to part with it.
Good question. I compared it to my Soyo PSU and I'd say they were identical, meaning this one is as prone to failure as the original PSUs. I know it is not the newer '311' revision that was so coveted by Soyo owners.
What I did to prolong its lifespan was drill about 15 holes in the back of...
Same here. Best price I'd seen on the card, so I jumped on that deal. So far, very impressed with the card. I know guys want to rag on Powercolor over rebates and tech support issues, but I have had no issues at all to report (note that the card I upgraded from was a Powercolor 7970 - still...
Received my BenQ EW2740L on Monday .. so psyched to get it hooked up and seeeeeee .... the cracked screen that it displayed !! Oh HELL NO !! Are you sh*tting me ??!!??!!
1) Log in to Amazon - request RMA
2) Fill out RMA for from BenQ
3) Submit RMA form and invoice
4) Receive a mailer daemon...
Just got my Soyo Topaz S working via DVI last night. Ohh, the smile it brought to my face to see it working again after languishing in the parts dungeon for the past 2+ years !!
I purchased a used PSU off Ebay, then drilled about 18 holes in the back of the Soyo bezel, then mounted an Antec...
Going for a Dell monitor is very rarely the wrong move. They offer up some amazing panels, and the prices are well within reason. It's snobby to say it, but I wouldn't go for less than a 27" if it were me. But, that is simply because I'm a lot older than you are (46) and my eyes just can't see...
I went to look at an HP Pavilion 27xi last night at the local Best Buy. I'm in the market for a 27 IPS 1080p and I really do think that monitor is #1 on my list tight now. I initially wanted a 1440p Korean panel like the Yamakasi or the Qnix, but my vision has deteriorated so much in the past 3...
I have one with the same issue - hosed EDID info. I actually have the EDID info, but I am unclear on how to reflash it to the DVI port. Did you use Powerstrip full version to resolve it ?? I haven't found a detailed guide on how to do this yet, so I hope you can help me out.
Closed beta of Dirty Bomb. I'm too old for a fast twitch FPS (tendinitis in elbow) , and before I had even finished the tutorial, I had decided to uninstall the game. An hour later, I finally exited after my team won 3 out of 3 rounds. Dirty Bomb is from Splash Damage, the developers of Enemy...
I bought two of these in the past 2 months, both are being used in AMD x4 mATX builds using onboard video. With that hardware, these are ideal budget PSUs, as no one will be gaming on them. They are basic Mom n Pop rigs, and for under $20 each, I couldn't be happier.
Let's face it - no gamer...
I'm not completely sold on the MSI at that price. If I found a Powercolor PCS+ 290X for $280 at Amazon, I would bite on that before a Lightning at $350. The 7970 I have is a Powercolor brand, and it does an amazing job for what I paid for it - $115 used ;)
Now that I have gotten into heavily...
I'm pissed at Amazon as well. It's almost like they have an inventory tracker that finds the high end cards at Newegg that go out of stock, which triggers a 10-20% increase of their price on that same card.
I'm still shopping for a 290 or a 290x, but unfortunately I'm also stuck with $125 in...
No need to defend or justify, my man ! It's a great card, and I think if you don't get any coil whine, you are golden ! Glad you have a case that can keep it cool (BTW, I love that case !!!). Keep us updated in case they show up again on the 'Egg.
I'm curious what you think of that 7990 once you start using it hard. I passed on that deal after thinking it over not once but twice. Granted, it is a helluva card, but the possibility of coil whine and micro-stuttering caused me to pass. I am still holding out for a PCS+ 290X or a 970 - not...
GTX580. It made it 3+ years, which is a long time when it comes to GPU hardware. It was the last of 3 successive cards that I paid $400 for - first was an eVGA 8800GTS KO ACS3 640mb, then a BFG GTX280 OC, then the Zotac GTX580.And with that ended my string of Nvidia video card purchases dating...
Good luck in the search. I bid this one up but wanted to stay under $35 shipped.

They occasionally show up on flEbay, but as you know it really is hit or miss. I have a 790X-G45, and the upgrade cost...
Bump for a very similar setup to mine. I have almost the same board, but went with the iSSD version that has the 20GB mSATA SSD included.
Great price on the combo. GL with the sale ! Need to convince myself I don't need that H100.
