Home server HDD issue, need advice

Home server HDD issue, need advice

I played with a 2TB work around many years ago. It works fine until you need to reinstall WHS. On a server reinstall WHS can locate and install existing storage drives, the version of the work around I tried broke this ability. It might be time to leave WHS v1 behind if you want to use...

Home server HDD issue, need advice

Is this WHS v1? If so, you are limited to 2TB drives. This limit has had me playing with windows server 2012 R2 The 4TB NAS drives work well

    host bus adapter recommendations

Looking to buy a host bus adapter. narrowed down to the LSI 9300-8i or the Adaptec 7805H the LSI is the front runner at the moment LSI 9300-8i Adaptec 7805H I don't "need" miniSAS or 12Gb/s, but miniSAS seems neater and "future proof". Any recommendations? LSI or Adaptec? Thanks.

    3 or 4tb Hard Drive WHSV1

I believe you could use a >2TB drive in WHSv1, but the drive will be limited in available capacity. that said, I have a five drive raid 6 array in my WHSv1 box. however, the array is not added to WHS this is the console just after adding the raid 6 array to the box

    3 or 4tb Hard Drive WHSV1

Whs v1 won't natively recognise anything greater than 2TB. There was a work around discussed a long time ago. There was a limitation of the work around, but damned if i can remember it.

    WHSv1 Questions

    1) IDE will work fine. 2) Probably not. I didn't bother. 3) No. Install WHS then add Intel card. WHS may prompt for drivers. Use Server 2003 drivers or, if not available, XP drivers may work. 4) You need the 8off pool drives? Probably not. You could be anal and "long" format them...

    Post your fileserver's enclosure

I used a mid-desktop case for size. When I started the build it was a very simple build, however the build evolved. If I started again I would still take this route. The CSE-M35TQ uses 92mm fans. I purchased the CSE-M35TQB from a UK reseller.

The [H]ard Forum Storage Showoff Thread - Post your 10TB+ systems

The [H]ard Forum Storage Showoff Thread - Post your 10TB+ systems

Thinking about it some more the minimum entry should be 25TB Why? Because some motherboards have eight on-board SATA ports. 8 * 3TB = 24TB Perhaps start a well hard thread for those with => 25TB????
  25. A

The [H]ard Forum Storage Showoff Thread - Post your 10TB+ systems

perhaps the "cost of entry" should be increased to >= 20TB i.e. greater than the storage that can be achieve with only "on-board SATA ports" (six) with the currently largest available hard drive (3TB) 6 * 3TB = 18TB and before anyone moans, that would be me out of the game... though...

searching SAS HBA Controller with Power Management

I have an Adaptec 5805 raid controller. I also have an Adaptec 3805 raid controller. This controller does not support power management. The controller supports power management of a raid array. As far as I can tell, the 5805 will not power manage JBOD drives

I have an SM board in my WHS, albeit running an core i3 the safest thing to do memory wise is ensure the memory you decide upon is on SM's approved memory list. yup, it's somewhat limiting in choice, but potentially saves a lot of agro further along the line. for the record, i picked...

raid10 is two pairs of disks mirrored. Whilst raid10 can tolerate two disk failures, raid10 cannot tolerate a failed disk from each pair, whereas raid6 can tolerate any two disks failing.
