Wow, Thank you guys for the huge response!!!
Yes I've taken a look at Drobo - it looks like an awesome option. I'm just concerned it wouldn't have the bandwidth to support 3 or 4 people editing off of it at once. Has anyone tried something like this?
I feel like a single gigabit connection...
Not to double post, but I don't think I posted properly in the other section - and nobody seemed to have an answer.

Hey.
I work with some editors as their IT guy. Basically they are currently shuffling external drives to one another editing projects on Final cut 7. I'd like to simplify the process by getting them onto a SAN-like system where they can store the master footage, and essentially edit off the...
I run an Enemy Territory game server @ home. Its on a 50 down and 8 up connection.
The connection seems to be fine for the most part for most players, however people on the other end of the country (Oregon, & Cali) have much larger pings and experience lag. These same players play on a...
I have to be honest. I don't know that I have an answer for you.
I have a similar problem I want solved. Although my work flow is different, I too want to shrink down my power usage and drives into a better more compact system. My question too is - what is the best system!?
From what it...
Something to also keep in mind is that most anti-cheat programs built into the games (Especially punk buster) can also be a source of lag and may not be your machine at all
AH - yes both are.
I at first had the router setup as best as I could as an access point with DHCP off with my one wireless device I would assign it a specific IP however I have multiple wireless devices coming and going and I can't use that setup anymore including one device that doesn't...
Hi - I've recently installed a new WRT610N router onto my small business network.
Previously my network was as follows: Modem - Server - LAN where the server acts as a gateway using routing and remote access.
The addition to the setup now has the router between the modem and the server...
unfortunately - no you can't. Although you would think that would make sense, WHS limits the system drive to only 20 gigs - and it is HIGHLY recommended you don't fiddle with it. You technically shouldnt need a full 20 gigs of system disk space as the machine should have as few programs...
I haven't done much research on it........it seems to be difficult to get going? I tried in Freenas to get it going smooth, but i always ran into issues with it
I keep hearing about these issues with DE...have you tried a fresh install? hows the specs on your main rig?
hmmm, something to think about....It's just annoying because as a geek, knowing that its already built on technology from roughly 2003 its already going on 8 years old even though it wasn't released until much later.
Really? I figured I had some sort of driver issue, but I can't seem to...
I don't blame either of you, i'm just concerned that Microsoft will pull the plug in the next couple of months in terms of updates - and I rather upgrade now while my server is only a couple of tbs of data before I end up with 10 or more and I need to figure out how to move it - while recycling...
Well for hyper-v I suppose it couldn't but something like virtualbox might suit your server in the meantime. Currently my setup is a hyper-v WHS but i'm getting awful streaming issues where videos randomly conk-out and I can't seem to fix it
You know its funny....before I had WHS i tried endlessly to get Amahi running on my box but couldn't get the thing to accept my unique ID doesn't it run on the older Fedora 12 or have they upgraded it to 14?
I'm thinking i'm gonna switch over to that too....seems like the best of both worlds really - still need to figure out a network backup solution that i'd be happy with. I really would miss the incremental backups with drive imaging
As we all know.....Microsoft has decided to pull DE - Drive Extender from its next release of Windows Home Server code named "VAIL".
To me and a lot of other users DE was the core of the product and without it, makes it seemingly useless as there are plenty of alternatives most of which are...
It seems to me to be like all the other NAS devices available - using propreity software on itself - of which you can chose several raid solutions 0, 1, and 5. It doesn't appear to do much else though
It's a rosewill.
Just to update - This morning I was investingating the card again. I decided to start a large file transfer to the server and checked out the lights on the nic. It turns out the lights on the nic periodically turn off and turn back on. I changed out the cable and the problem...
My WHS run on hyper-v seems to be having connectivity issues.
When streaming movies or tv shows sometimes it hiccups and the stream stutters alittle or it just flat out dies.
Also when moving files approx 1 gig and up it gets about 50% or more complete, then I get an error: There is a...
The storage is a couple offlined terabyte drives added to the vm. I may have fixed the initial problem: a conflict of ip addresses however I still don't know which nic I can tweak
I had to reinstall server 08 r2 and in turn hyper v. I reimported my virtual whs but have since had serious streaming issues and slow transfer speeds. I know id like to enable jumbo frames along with changing a few settings however I'm not sure which of the 3 cards I should be working on. (The...

Its not ALL 2tb drives - just the advanced format ones which are trickling out
I honestly do not have experience with SSD drives but I can tell you from what i've learned they provide a performance boost most noticeably during boot. I don't think that in a WHS setup however - that the performance would be jaw-dropping.
In the case of stability and reliably I would say...
I would def post what your intentions are for the server...is it just holding onto files? streaming over the network? backing up other computers?
If its going to be streaming and/or backing up other machines I doubt you'd want to use that cpu as it honestly will not cut it - You'd most likely...
Poweredge 830 for sale I need to migrate to a larger case so I'd like to sell this one off.
This machine has always been an awesome work horse holding my 8tb's of data with no issues - spins like a top.
Runs Server 2003,2008 and more recently windows 7 with no issues.

not sure about changing the size of the PSU....however in terms of brands I would stick with Corsair....they seem to be really reliable and built well.
