I've been doing this since the 1990s when 18-24 month upgrades where more or less mandatory due to increases/improvements. In the past 10 years or so, I can go about 5 years on my desktop and a lot longer for other stuff that isn't used that much (laptop, secondary PC)...

I have them mounted on my house and well I'm normally not away for months on end either. Sounds like you need a hardwired setup. I use Wifi and batteries for mine and it does what I need it to do.
