What distro to use on my home router?

I have not used this in many years, but ClarkConnect does all of that and then some. I think they are ClearOS now. Check it out: http://www.clarkconnect.com/legacy/index.php

    Port won't forward cisco 871

The port re-direct will redirect requests for port 80 to a port that you specify. COX does indeed block port 80 on regular "home" accounts. This is for bandwidth reasons. If you decide to go with no-ip.com, you are doing so at your own risk. COX does monitor how much bandwidth you use and...

How do you handle lab/public access machines?

Try using Microsoft SteadyState. It's free. I just installed it on the computers in a computer lab I set up for a local church. I allows you to limit the capabilities of the users per user account. Check it out. It's not that bad for a Microsoft product...

    new dfi 965p-s, wont post

Thats an interesting statement. I wonder how you could explain to me why my HP xw8400 "workstation" came with Dual Xeon 5160s? The Xeon processor is most definitely a server processor, but is also extremely beneficial in high end workstations.

I agree 100%. This is what I build for almost all of my clients with much larger networks than this. Endian FTW!

    Upgrades on a budget.

I agree 100% with what Morfius said. I have used freenas and I run an Endian Firewall. They are both great products and can run on just about anything. Endian does require a decent amount of RAM once you use content filtering and proxying. What you are wanting to do can definitely be done...

    N5200 vs ReadyNAS

LOL... sound a lot like me... If you can build a PC you can build a NAS device. I dont find one to be harder to build than the other... unless you plan on putting it in some kind of custom enclosure.

    N5200 vs ReadyNAS

I was contemplating buying a NAS one day and saw how pricey they were so I built my own with some spare parts I had and used FreeNAS. Works great and I saved a couple $100 in the process. Just an alternative you may want to think about.

    Optiplex GX150 Tower Chassis Question

I have put up to 3. 2 in the internal 3.5" location and 1 in the second 5.25" drive bay with a 3.5 to 5.25 adapter bracket. Its really simple. I am sure, if you got creative, you could add more. I was thinking of making some custom 3.5" drive rails to add more drives.

    IPCop troubles

Another thing to keep in mind... if your ISP assigns your IP address via DHCP, make sure you unplug the power on your cable/dsl modem for a few minutes and then plug it back in so that it can grab the new MAC address from your router. I had the same issue and it was all because the modem still...

Everyone has offered really good linux firewall solutions. What it all comes down to is... what features are you specifically looking for? Everyone here has their own preference. I myself have used ipcop, clarkconnect, and Endian. Right now, Endian is the best solution for what I need. It...

What proxy are you running 500+ users?

What server are you trying to load it on? For 500+ users, I would assume that you would need something with some decent horse power. Especially if you are using adv proxy and url filtering.

    I have a huge problem

We use alot of the Adtran DSUs and NT1s boxes for our VTCs. Adtran stuff is pretty popular. You may not have a problem selling the stuff on ebay. Only problem is that you have no way to test the equipment for proper functionality.
