ESXi free 8.0 seems to be the last one !

Always run ESXi on supported hardware in production. For home lab have at it. You can still run ESXi as the hypervisor and use Nutanix for the HCI storage layer, this is supported, although I don't know why you would do this vs. vSAN as it is less expensive, simpler, and easily outperforms AOS...

ESXi free 8.0 seems to be the last one !

By the way, there is a LOT of incorrect information floating around - if you have any questions and want to know the truth from someone who actually works for VMware, I'm happy to help. I can (and do) also take what is being said in the community back to the business so that they can adapt as...

ESXi free 8.0 seems to be the last one !

VMware SA here. Best bet for home lab is VMUG Advantage, about $180 a year for the full VCF/EUC stack for non-prod use. VCF only has a hard requirement to deploy vSAN for the SDDCM Management domain, workload domains can use external SAN or vSAN. Also, you don't have to deploy SDDCM - you can...

Anyone have experience with Supermicro H12SSL for EPYC CPU's?

This is super cool to follow. I know you mentioned you switched to Proxmox as you felt like you weren't getting timely ESXi patches, but we release all ESXi patches to everyone regardless of support level. Yes, you have to login to Customer Connect, but anyone can download patches as soon as...

    Best GPU options for 3440x1440?

Posted this in another thread as well. I run 7680x1440 across 3x 32" 144Hz. monitors. I personally have been on the fence about this for several weeks now, and just pulled the trigger on a 4080FE to replace my 2070S. Yes, I probably spent more than I should have, even though I got it at the...

New GPU now or wait till year end

I personally have been on the fence about this for several weeks now, and just pulled the trigger on a 4080FE to replace my 2070S. Yes, I probably spent more than I should have, even though I got it at the "list" price of $1,200. However, given where TSMC is located and the fact that China is...

Time for a HW Upgrade, What are real world performance differences?

Can confirm that vSphere 6.7 will run on it - have three in my lab. I think moving to SSD, etc. only makes sense if you try and get dense on the host(s), where IOPs factor more than throughput. If you're just running a handful of VMs it's probably not worth investing into that box. If you do...

MS SQL Server in VMware Cluster

No longer the case. vSAN supports it natively as does FC storage for vmdk. See Vladan's post here: https://4sysops.com/archives/vmware-vsphere-7-clustered-vmdk/ Shared VMDK requirements: A fiber channel array only. The array must support ATS, SCSI-3 PR–type Write Exclusive–All Registrant...

Alternatives to DFS for Server Duplication

PeerGFS, formerly known as PeerSync, is a very robust solution that is worth considering. I have used it in the past to accomplish exactly what you are describing here: https://www.peersoftware.com/solutions/data-center-synchronization

    USB hubs in VMs

For USB devices that you need to connect to VMs I highly recommend this solution: https://www.digi.com/products/models/aw-usb-2 I get no compensation for this, just something I have used on several projects.

    Domain time

With VMware you also need to keep in mind that just un-checking the synchronization box in the GUI config will not completely disable all chances of a host time sync occurring. For instance, a time sync can still happen under the following circumstances: Resume a virtual machine from a...

The Disconnect Between Game Reviews And Gamers

Why is it comedy gold? We all have different values and beliefs, so I guess I fail to find the humor in a site that provides not only good game reviews but also a moral perspective based on their beliefs as well.

Is Using ESXi Or Hyper-V For Virtualized Gaming Possible?

For 3D gaming in VMware, you will need a card that supports GRID vGPU (Nvidia K-series) preferably along with Horizon or Citrix. It can be done, but it will not be cheap. More info here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/vmware.html

Log on to vSphere client with non-domain computer?

There is no need for the computer you are running the client from to be domain joined - all you need is the proper credentials as configured either for your host (typically 'root') or vSphere SSO. In the case of vSphere, you can use the SSO domain (default is vsphere.local on 5.5) or whatever...

New to VM.. Hyper-V or ESXi?

It is good to learn both. In my experience, Hyper-V is used for convenience virtualization whereas VMware vSphere/ESXi is used for enterprise virtualization. Having the Windows baggage tied to your hypervisor is a pain in and of itself to manage. You are correct with your licensing question -...

ESXi 5.5 and Realtek RTL 8111G

    1. Cannot answer, but from experience your best bet with ESXi is going to be either Broadcom or preferably Intel NICs. 2. VSAN is a paid feature that requires a minimum of three hosts, each with a minimum 10:1 ratio of spinning disks to SSD, and a 10Gb backend for traffic dedicated to VSAN...

    VMware host-based antivirus

We too are looking into this. Currently we have Bitdefender deployed to all of our desktops, etc. and run ESET NOD32 on the servers. BD has a hypervisor based offering that we are going to be looking into, but we will also be looking at the other players on the market.

    ESXI to SAN

Can you explain how you came to this conclusion? I completely disagree. In our own extensive internal testing with EqualLogic, Nimble, and even VSAN, we saw improvements in latency and throughput of between 9% and 25% with jumbo frames enabled. It is only when we completed saturated the 10Gb...

Zerto - Modify Memory and CPU at the DR Site

For the booting of selected machines at DR, it sounds like you need to re-architect your VPGs so that only those machines you want to power up together are in them. For the resize, you could have cluster HA admission controls set in such a way that VM power on operations would not be allowed at...

    Elite: Dangerous Refund Policy

I am glad they are offering a refund to those who want one. However, it must be said that the future of gaming lies not with the computing power you have on your desk, but with the enormous compute resource clusters of the "cloud" (I hate that term). This is going to be the only way for things...

What do people think of VMware NSX especially after VMworld

To me, it is the future. Everything is moving towards being converged, and fully software managed - with the underlying hardware just doing what the software instructs it to do. I for one welcome this change as it *should* make management more cohesive, especially in more complex environments...

+1 for Memtest, run at least 72 hours as many passes as possible. CPU I am less concerned about, if there is an issue there it will generally present almost immediately.
