    Half Life: Alyx

    Humble VR Bundle

I got in on this last night, Superhot is pretty fun, Gorn is great but you NEED lots of clear space! Superhot to a lesser degree. Especially in gorn you are going to be moving wildly and you are not going to recognize the chaperone barrier until you've put your controller through a tv. I added...

Samsung Odyssey+ VR Headset ($229 Live Again 1-27)

I got in on this deal and have had it for a few days. I wear glasses and was surprised that they fit without issue. My girlfriend has glasses as well, she didn't have an issue of them bumping into the lenses. I am waiting on lens protectors to arrive, after some searching these were what keep...

Samsung Odyssey+ VR Headset ($229 Live Again 1-27)

Yeah it's not going to be as good as those, but it's also like 1/3 the cost. Those are in a different price bracket, and would be harder to justify. For me, if I can justify spending $600+ for them, I can save up a bit more and get the index. This at $230 was a lot easier to try out and get my...

Samsung Odyssey+ VR Headset ($229 Live Again 1-27)

Very valid points, you've given me some things to think on for the next few weeks while it ships. I may try it out on both, I'm sure it'll be much better on my pc, such was the original plan before she expressed interest. She will absolutely be more interested in the casual side of games. I'll...

Samsung Odyssey+ VR Headset ($229 Live Again 1-27)

Yeah thanks, it certainly wouldn't be something verbalized, but a consideration for multiple reasons. Primarily because she doesn't use her pc much as it is, and she wouldn't likely appreciate the differences. For example, her pc has a ryzen 2600 with an rx 580 gpu on a run of the mill 24" 1080p...

Samsung Odyssey+ VR Headset ($229 Live Again 1-27)

Decided to take the plunge. Been considering an Index for my pc and something lesser for the gf's pc, this made it easy to decide on hers! At this rate I may have to play half life alyx on it anyway, seems like the index is always out of stock.

LAN Party Games - Suggestions Needed

Killing Floor 2 is still being updated, haven't played for a while but it's a lot of fun for coop, and supports up to six players. Several different classes (ignore survivalist) to pull their role in a party, keep the difficulty down until you get a feel for it. Flatout 2 if you want a...

Which 8TB HDD for media storage?

A lot of people (myself included) buy a bunch of these and then put the bare drive inside a server. Seems pretty cost ineffective to buy lower capacity yet higher price per TB drives, just to save on some wall warts? These are good if you're using one or two, many more and I can't fathom why you...

HOT ! Various 1TB NVMe with coveted E12 Controller $135 aprox retail

Updating the firmware has always seemed like a hack job on these, and potentially destructive. Are you sure it will actually make an appreciable difference? For me it's the boot drive for my server, which only reboots quarterly, and I cannot afford any possibility of a fried drive. I can't...

Which 8TB HDD for media storage?

Just be careful when opening it, and you can pop it back in the case for warranty purposes. I kept all 8 of my cases for this reason, though it didn't end up being needed.

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

I don't know, my server motherboard boots to uefi and still shows the areca initialization and status with the few seconds opportunity to enter the setup afterwards. To be fair it's still consumer grade stuff, just an Asus Prime x-370 pro w/ a ryzen 1700x. I almost wish I could turn it off as...

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

If the raid card is beeping with the power off, that kind of tells me you have a battery backup unit attached to it as well? Otherwise I can't figure out why a failed fan would be causing a beep with the system powered off. Anyway upon boot get into the card's setup before windows, see if all...

PSA: Windows 7 support ends tomorrow, Jan 14, 2020

Just upgraded my old boss's pc he got in 2012 to an ssd on Saturday. It's still running windows 7, and it will continue to do so until that pc, or he, dies. He still doesn't fully understand that his documents aren't 'saved in word', no matter how many times I show and explain it to him.

Here's my 512gb premium in my server, from mid last year so it's seen some use. Interesting differences between the as ssd test and the crystaldiskmark one. Note I did not stop ongoing operations so this wasn't a clean testing environment. Seems my write speed have tanked a bit from doing the...

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

Yeah one of the benefits is that for the most part that data is readable by the areca controller card, thus why putting them back in order usually doesn't matter. It's when you've had a drive failure, and some of that data may be corrupted, that know which went where is key.

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

Label drives to drive cage positions, label the cable ends, etc. - whatever is appropriate for your situation. Imagine if the drives got pulled and all the cables disconnected while you weren't there, what would you have had to of done to be able to re-assemble them exactly as they were?

Which 8TB HDD for media storage?

Meh, mine are past the two year mark now, but if I had an issue I could just pop em back in the enclosure for warranty. I didn't damage any of my cases when shucking. OP should keep that in mind too - just do it carefully and you can put it back together with ease.

Which 8TB HDD for media storage?

This is the way. Buy you some easystores, shuck the drives, move on with life. In 2017 I shucked 8x of them to add to my plex media storage array, popped em in some 4 in 3 cages, haven't had a hiccup yet. My setup is quite janky, but if this works, it'll work just fine yanking one drive out and...

I got 32gb in 2017 and the only time I have ever used it is when I was running 10x vms as a test. It's absolutely not worth it if you have no use for high ram workloads. I play games at 1440p, never goes much above 10gb used.

WD Easystore 14TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive - $200

Yeah at my current rate of consumption I should have another two years before I run out of space, but I'm considering getting a 4k projector which would significantly increase my rate of data usage. I've still got 30TB of space free between my arrays right now, out of a total of 66TB. Funny how...

WD Easystore 14TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive - $200

Ahh yes, interesting read! I guess I haven't looked into it for a while, and I had figured they were exactly like this, just slightly slower for some reason or another. As the summary there pointed out, I have to agree that the cost savings far outweigh the small performance hit you take here.

WD Easystore 14TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive - $200

Been known for a while that these are white label rebadges of the reds. When I was getting my 8tbs in mid 2017, they were still full fledged red labels, but now all that's changed is the color of the sticker. These are exactly what you want for Plex, it's what I use. Just make sure you keep the...

WD Easystore 14TB External USB 3.0 Hard Drive - $200

Yup, two years ago I picked up 8x 8tbs at $160 a pop. This is pretty crazy, great price point. Personally I think $180 for 16tb is my breaking point, I'll get 8x to replace my array of 4tb disks.

Ask the Experts Question: Should I have a dedicated SSD for games?

This is foolish. We saw a big leap going to ssds for game loading, much less so (typically non-existent) going from ssd to nvme. I run a 500gb nvme for my main drive and most intense games, and my old 1tb sata ssd for less intensive games or ones not played as often. The difference is extremely...

When you build a new system, what do you do with the old one?

The problem is when I go and modify things, like my 790i motherboard I destroyed the combo chipset&mosfet cooler to use a bitspower motherboard block. By the time I replaced that (2013 I believe) noone was going to buy a water cooled q6600 & mobo. The water cooled gtx 260s had both started...

When you build a new system, what do you do with the old one?

Usually it goes down the upgrade line. I've got my pc, the server, girlfriend's pc, and my mom's. My pc guts went into a friend's server, my girlfriend's pc's old guts went to upgrade my mom's pc. Mom's old pc guts are sitting in anti static bags. With water cooled systems, it's often hard to...

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

I upgraded from a 1220 to 1883 and my old array was detected fine, still worked although performance had odd speed spikes. I can't rule out that I did something wrong, but I remade the array on the new controller and all has been fine since then so the disks weren't to blame. So you should be...

    CDW Outlet Finds

For such a use, I think watching for standard sales on 500-650va cyberpower units from typical websites will do you better. You don't need pure sinewave for that anyway, and anything on cdw is likely to be outside of what would be considered cheap (having to pay to ship these would kill any...

YMMV: WD Elements 12TB $186 - Plex Pass Users

When I moved from 5x 1tb to 5x 4tb, I moved to Raid 6. The failure rate hasn't gotten any better as drive sizes have increased, so the odds of getting another URE during a rebuild have only climbed. Now I'm at 8x 4tb and 8x 8tb for two raid 6 arrays, knowing full well there's a pretty high...

Yeah my card supports sas as well, the Areca ARC-1883ix-16-2G. I will likely upgrade to a proper server chassis moving forward, probably the Supermicro SuperChassis 846E16-R1200B with BPN-SAS2-846EL1 (which as far as I can tell supports both sata and sas drives.) I would need a new cable to...

Most of these have been snatched up, but for those waiting, the few remaining are down to $318. I paid $160 for my 8tb wd easystores, even with 8tb easystores going down to 130 now this is still a great deal for 7200rpm sas drives! If there were 8 available at this price I might have made a...

I don't have any particular experience with the issue you're troubleshooting, but I do have two arrays on an 1883 that I thought I'd show you what I have. Perhaps it will help?
