I am a programmer. I like hardware and sometimes give build lists to professional customers. I guess you can say I use messing with PCs as procrastination from getting code done, occasionally :)
I learned that you cannot answer a
"make this code faster"
with
"sure. Let's watercool and overclock".
I upgraded from Win10 home to pro. Since then it requires my MSN password to log into the local machine.
How do I switch back to using the machine password? I troveled through all the related settings but couldn't find it.
Don't do hardware RAID. Even without ZFS software RAID is better these days.
You can mitigate the need for ECC by running memtest86 on a regular basis. You could do a monthly safety thing where you scrub the pool and then memtest a bit.
Looking for a 2230 NVMe M.2 SSD with DRAM cache and not being QLC. Any suggestions?
Capacity doesn't matter much, 256 GB minimum, more is better.
Any idea what the flash is on this one? I know it doesn't have DRAM...
ZFS has RAID "built in". RAID5 like functionality can be requested when creating the zpool.
The bifurcation question only becomes relevant when you want more than one NVMe SSD in a x8 or x16 slot. If you only use one you don't need any support from the mainboard other than a slot of at least x4...
I have a pool of physical machines that can boot into a pool of operating systems from a heavyweight file server. Any machine can boot any OS based on the dhcp/tftp configuration on the server.
It's very practical. And also good because the server has RAID and proper backup for all the OS...
I don't think it is a separate issue. Has Apple invested less than Qualcomm? Probably not, rather more. Where's that investment being financed from? Patents should protect from copying existing tech without research. Not invalidate new research.
In any case, I didn't ask to invalidate existing...
I want holders for fans to point them toward arbitrary positions inside an open case. Something that clamps to the edge of the case, holds the fan and has something in between that is flexible but stays in position after flexing.
Examples would be goosenecks (like on lamps) or the bendable...
Yeah, but you still might be able to use a TIVO. You need a cablecard for that and the cable companies don't like that, but to my understanding regulations force them to offer cablecards.
The random chance to suffer a flipped bit from cosmic rays is one thing.
DIMMs or DIMM slots going bad or overheating or whatever are quite another. There can be masses of bit errors from that one day to the next. With ECC you will be warned about this condition.
Or in other words: if you...
Uh, who said I consume ads on cable TV, or ever did?
Also, a TIVO allows you to skip ads on cable TV, whereas you usually can't skip ads in online services (with exceptions as mentioned).
Did somebody try these "heavy metal headphones" (whatever that means) Heavys H1H? They have mics built in.

I wouldn't mind a punchy shound every now and then.
