New and Improved Watercooling Sticky - Post Your Systems Here

Thanks. I forgot to mention that the CPU will average 95C at 325W on R23. Zero clock throttling. Once winter comes around again with ambients of 20C I'll be able to get some better bench runs in. Still broke some personal records this morning and a couple older benchmarks put me in the top 100...

New and Improved Watercooling Sticky - Post Your Systems Here

Hard to believe no one has posted since my last ones in March. Here's my new main rig. Asus Z790 Hero Lapped 13900KS with a Thermal Grizzly contact frame and Watercool heavy backplate, Heatkiller IV block 32GB Kingston DDR5-7200C38 Intel Optane 905P 380GB M.2 eVGA 3080Ti with Heatkiller V...

Just a blast from the past build (Windows XP Pro 32-bit, CRT Monitor)

There is a user on ebay who was selling the Titan Blacks and other compute-heavy cards of the era in matched pairs, all in pristine condition. Must have been a lab environment or similar. He doesn't have any more cards that would work in WinXP listed currently, though. The Asus 780 Ti sounds...

Just a blast from the past build (Windows XP Pro 32-bit, CRT Monitor)

I did something similar recently, making my own "peak WinXP" machine. And it is stupid fast. I made 116K in 3DMark01 with it so far. Maybe I'll crack 120K with some GPU OC'ing, but it's really CPU bound. Asrock Z97 Anniversary Intel G3258, delidded and at 4.8GHz (50% OC) 2x2GB Corsair DDR3-2133...

New and Improved Watercooling Sticky - Post Your Systems Here

Two systems to share. The first is my "backup rig": Lapped 13600K on an Asrock Z690 Extreme with my 2080Ti, with a GTX240 radiator in push/pull, and Heatkiller blocks. GPU hums along at under 50C on a 300W gaming load. Great little system. The second is my "peak Windows 7" retro rig consisting...

How long is a 12700k setup good for?

5 years, easy. 10 if you push it. I coupled my 2600K with a 2080Ti for a little while and it was fine.

Do PS3's have any use now?

Funny. I called a PS3 a retro machine, yet I call my old Socket A rig a vintage gaming PC. Can't win apparently. PS3s are still good for playing Blu Rays, too. I haven't checked to see how many streaming apps are still available.

evga sale this weekend, big cuts on gpus

The pricing on many of their B-stock GPUs is confusing. Not competitive with Ebay prices, even. It's tempting to pick up a new 2060 KO Ultra Gaming at $250, though.

Do PS3's have any use now?

Good video on the levels of HD in the games. Force Unleased was done at 1280x720p apparently. Surprised that GT5 wasn't full HD either given it was a star title for the PS consoles.

    [H]ard Forum Storage Showoff Thread

I compared the Optane to my HP EX920 and even though the sequentials are still in the high 2000MB/s range, the Q1D1 test was 3-4x faster than the flash based drive. Looking at Gen4 drives the Optane still is better by a large margin in that game. Once I migrate to a Gen 5/DDR5 based rig, the...

    Best all-around gaming/music headphones for $150?

I'll second the Sennheiser recommendation. Although I would go with good pair of headphones and get a desk mounted mic if you need one. I have a Blue Snowball and it has superior voice to any headset mic I've used.

    [H]ard Forum Storage Showoff Thread

I got a steal on this Optane 380GB M.2. Always wanted to pick one up for a fun drive or boot drive but they were always stupid expensive. The stock Intel "Thermal Solution" is pretty much a joke. On basic drive speed tests it would throttle before the end of the test. Picked up a Thermalright...

got a reminder of just how much faster a system is with SSD

SSDs really are the easiest way to give cheap or older machines a new lease on life. I can't believe PCs still ship with spinners as a boot drive these days. With Win10 it's ridiculous.

Do PS3's have any use now?

I have a couple old PS3s that I used to use for their BluRay capabilities. One phat backwards compatible one and one slim. Never really got into gaming on them. I have The Force Unleashed but since the PC version had better graphics I never bothered to get through it. Do they have any uses now...

Testing components before assembling loop, building on a bench, and other tips

I normally don't test before assembling a custom loop rig. It either works or it doesn't. I often assemble my rigs and loops in the kitchen. Makes it easier to clean parts, flush out things before assembly, and if there's a leak I don't make a huge mess where it shouldn't be. Mixing bowls...

EVGA will no longer do business with NVIDIA

I've bought GPUs almost exclusively from EVGA for something like 15 years now. Pretty crummy that Nvidia's margins have gone way up yet AIB makers are down to almost nothing. Something has to give.

OC an old 4770k with a few questions

Re-lidding with LM will help temps. Running naked will help a lot more. I did it to my 4770K and temps dropped a lot. Running the same 4.2 at 1.25V like you are and I have tons of temperature headroom on a custom loop with just a 240mm rad.

AMD to Host Livestream Event to Unveil Next Generation Ryzen Processors August 29th Monday

If the performance is going to be dead on with the 13th gen Intel CPUs, I'd like to see some tasty price wars. I'm thinking the 7600x/7700x in a tidy little ITX build would be fun, maybe on the B650E chipset.

    HTPC - no more?

I relate to the comments above. I've wanted to build an HD Plex chassis HTPC for a while, for streaming or light gaming. But since my Oppo can stream files from my NAS, and the AppleTV doing the rest of the work, there really is no need unless I wanted to game.

Well this is a trip down memory lane: HTC Thunderbolt - kickstand! HTC DNA - 4G! Iphone 6 Iphone 8 Iphone 13 Pro I usually get four years or so out of my phones, and only upgrade when they feel really slow or start to get buggy.

GN: Intel to push ATX12VO hard for Alder Lake

This standard will be annoying on SFF ITX builds. ATX doesn't bother me so much as I don't use SATA anymore, though I know it is still pretty common. Not sure how long the transition will take on this, or if it will be successful.

    freezemod pumps, anyone use em?

Actual DDC or a knockoff of similar format? 8W and ~3GPM/4m head are pretty decent specs for a simple loop. Only DDC failures I've heard of are of the 18W versions. Fair amount of power to not put into the water and into a plastic housing instead.
