Explicit Samuel L. Jackson coming to Amazon Alexa

Not that I'll ever let Alexa into my house, I'd vote for a Christopher Walken voice.

    Cities protesting 5g

I guess I'll be left behind. I won't buy a product that requires this kind of connection. As it is, I don't have any desire for any of the IoT devices I've seen advertised. Things like the Nest thermostat, smart lights and intelligent appliances hold no interest to me. Heck, the smart TVs I...

Apple Is Locking iPhone Batteries to Discourage Repair

From some of the articles I've been reading, this is changing. There don't appear to be many new 'gotta have' features in the new phones that warrant an upgrade. Especially at Apple's prices. Heck, the only reason I've decided to upgrade my Moto E (gen 1) is that I've gotten to the point...

Windows 10 New Start Button redesign

I dual boot Linux and Win 10, but when I'm running Win 10, the vast majority of the applications I use are what you call 3rd party crap. I use Firefox, Thunderbird, Everything search, numerous Nirsoft utilities, VLC, Libre Office, Sumatra, Media Player Classic, SageTV, g++, jEdit, CodeBlocks...

Windows 10 New Start Button redesign

With Open Shell, you can set it up to have cascading sub-menus. You'll then just need 2 clicks to execute any application in the start menu.

Windows 10 New Start Button redesign

I want a start menu that is hierarchical in nature like in XP or Win 7. I only use 'legacy' applications on my computers so all the 'associated' applications/documents that come with the main application will be in the same directory. I also like to be able to curate my start menu. Even...

Microsoft Tries Sneaking Telemetry Into Windows 7 "Security-Only" Update

Yep, same here. Boot to Linux for all my normal computing/programming needs and boot to Win 10 for games and the occasional Photoshop session (I dislike Gimp!). Windows 10 is what started my dual booting, before that I only played with Linux in Virtual box.

Microsoft Issues Warning For 800M Windows 10 Users

I actually tried AutoKey a few years ago and found it was too slow for my main use case. I mostly use AutoHotKey to make all of my editors/IDE/word processors use the Wordstar control sequences (yes, I'm that old). With AutoHotKey, there's no noticeable delay between hitting a control...

Microsoft Issues Warning For 800M Windows 10 Users

Why uninstall when you can dual boot? I haven't abandoned Windows 10 for gaming, but the rest of my time is spent in Linux. I do all my general computing/programming in Linux and only boot to my Win 10 partition when I want to game. All of the applications I use regularly are available on...

    The C64 is a full-sized Commodore 64 reboot, coming December 2019

I avoided the whole C64 scene. My first computer, that I didn't build myself, was an Amiga. Boy did I like it at the time, graphical interface, multitasking, 4096 colors and good sound. It was way ahead of the competition back then. Unfortunately, Commodore screwed the pooch in regards to...

Controllers?? I don't do controllers! I'm also not at all interested in game streaming. If I can't install the whole game on my machine(s), I'm not interested.

Millenium Falcon Ride Disney World exclusive

I loath Disney too but I'll have no problem passing this up. I can't think of any amusement park I'd want to go to when an adult ticket cost is $149.

Windows 10 1903 Unleashed to Public

I definitely agree on Mint Linux. I put it on a system for a friend (had XP on his machine) and everything just worked. Granted, he only does emails and watches the occasional youtube video. I dual boot my main machine with Devuan Linux. Linux for all the normal computing/programming needs...

Windows 10 1903 Unleashed to Public

On my main machine it's not the installing of the OS that's a pain. It's the installation of all the applications I use. After installing the OS, it takes 4 to 5 hours to turn off all the Win 10 features I don't want/need and then install and configure all my applications.

Windows 10 1903 Unleashed to Public

I know it's anecdotal but I've had quite a few more issues with Win 10 than I ever had with Win 7. I have 10 Windows boxes and for the 1809 update (after all the gyrations they had with it) I had to do 4 clean installs. A 40% failure rate for upgrading is not very good. I can understand my...

    AMD Ryzen 9 3000 is a 16-core Socket AM4 Beast

You an me both. I started my computer career in the late 70's. My home built system (I designed and wirewrapped most of the boards) was a z80 S100 buss system. I had a whole 4K of RAM!

Shocking: Amazon Workers Are Listening to What You Tell Alexa

I don't know, I believe him. The only reason I have a smart phone vs a flip phone is that I wanted a good scientific/programmers calculator app. I have my cellular data and wifi disabled on the phone since I have computers at home to do my interneting and I use a pay-as-you-go plan (only pay...

Get Ready for Targeted Ads on Your Smart TV

Just don't connect them to your network. I connect all of my TV's (all Visios) to my network through external computers that I control. I am a nerd so I had a number of old computers just waiting for something to do. The only reason I have smart TV's is that they were as cheap or cheaper than...

"Captain Marvel" Trolled the Trolls with a $455M Global Launch

I seem to be an exception since I was bored with the Black Panther movie. Not sure why, maybe just getting bored with the whole comic book movie scene. I have no plans on going to the Captain Marvel movie (though, the wifey may force me!). I'd rather just wait for netflix.

Windows 7 Is One Obstinate OS

Keep trying. I did and now I dual boot. Mostly because Windows is still better at gaming than Linux.

Windows 7 Is One Obstinate OS

It's only tolerable to me because of Classic Shell (now Open Shell). About a month after installing Windows 10 I finally started dual booting with Linux on my main machine. Now, Linux is used for my normal computing/programming needs and Win 10 is used for gaming and the occasional Photoshop...

Whole Foods Cuts Workers' Hours after Amazon Introduces Minimum Wage

I've been seeing price increases in a number of businesses I frequent. I know a number of the owners personally and they all said the increases were due to the minimum wage increases. Kind of an expected outcome.

Revenue from Music Streaming Services Grew 30% in 2018

Wasn't that part of the transition era where people were buying CDs to replace their old record albums? Once the replacements were done, sale fell to more normal levels. At least until streaming started taking over.

Volvo Reveals the New Polestar 2 Electric Performance Vehicle

Yeah, I dislike having all the tech crap in a car. Heck, I don't even turn on the radio when I'm driving (yes, even on long trips). About the only tech I'd like is to have a backup camera.

I've heard of it. It basically means 'a guiding principle'. Since I don't frequent strip joints, the other connotation never entered my mind.

The HTC 5G Hub Will Bring Cloud-Based Virtual Reality to the Home

Yeah, I'll believe in 5G when I see it. And even if it does work as well as all the hype, you know you'll have data caps (unless your watching content provided by your ISP).
